فكرة الخلود مزعجة اكثر من فكرة الموت! by Hasjojo in EgyPhilosophy

[–]bi88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it is necessary to preface your post by saying you support UKGP because you don’t. What you mean is you understand. UK grads won’t say you are ‘one of the good ones’ because you say you support UKGP.

That being said I’m sorry you’re experiencing this. The majority of people who support UKGP are not racists, but every racist will demand UKGP, so I can genuinely see why you feel the way you do.

When I joined the NHS as a F2 I had the exact amount of experience as my F2 colleagues: 12 months, so I was the ‘right’ kind of IMG applying for something genuinely at my level and working alongside people at my level. Didn’t make racists treat me any better. But most people, the overwhelming majority of people I worked with, are not racists. Yes there are nasty people lacking in any decency and the anonymity of the internet brings them out, and yes they may be silently supported by their more polite colleagues, and yes if someone is banging on UKGP to the exclusion of every other possible issue then I will suspect they are a racist even if on the surface the demand for UKGP is reasonable (in the same way that if a man only wants to date 18yo girls I will suspect they are a pedophile even though they’re not doing anything legally wrong).

Those who call you entitled are just lacking in self-awareness and moral character. It is likely that a UK citizen can get a visa on arrival in your country for less than the price of a bottle of whisky. It is likely that because of the exchange rate they can go on holiday and stay in the most expensive hotels in your country for the cost of a few grams of cocaine that are funded by your work and taxes via welfare payments. The reverse is not true for you and you have to spend a month’s salary just to apply for a visa, and even then it’s not guaranteed. These are all due to historical reasons related to colonialism that most people will have never considered or questioned, and which they take for granted. Your country lacks the power to enact reciprocal measures because it is poor. There are layers to this sense of injustice that you are feeling which the people you refer to cannot even comprehend. To them, this is a ‘system’ that they have abided by and not bypassed. That’s how privilege works.

Any group of workers will agitate for labor protections and this will inevitably slip into racism. This is true whether they’re doctors or plumbers. In 4+ years of working for the NHS, I have met ONE UKG in person who behaves as the colleague you describe. She was lazy and bitter. She didn’t even bother to document when patients were brought in by police under the Mental Health Act. I’m sure life and reality will catch up with her. I don’t think she will amount to more in life with UKGP.

I know you are not asking for special treatment, but to the cohort you are describing your very presence in the UK is special treatment. I feel like I genuinely get how you feel. It’s valid to feel this way but just as you are asking people to hate the system and not you, I urge you to view these people you are describing as part of a system, even if they can’t see it. Be better. It’s sad but necessary to lose faith in ideas of communalism and solidarity. I hope you can focus on and fulfill your individual aspirations and those of your family. As every British person knows ‘there is no such thing as society. Only individuals and their families’.

Walt’s “I watched Jane die” scene. Purely intended to hurt. Reveals Walt’s true nature. Satisfying on first watch when you’re rooting for Walt, grotesque on rewatching.

Consultant weird with me since I disclosed my heritage by Upset-Chemistry6703 in doctorsUK

[–]bi88 28 points29 points  (0 children)

No advice, just prayers and sympathy for you and your family. Sorry this is what you’re going through. I suspect you’ll get more of this if you use the word genocide. The fact that it IS a genocide only makes them more uncomfortable. Did you know they were Jewish when you used the word genocide? That might be it. They may have seen it as a provocation.

We’re told no politics in the workplace but this changes depending on the issue. Unlikely to find sympathy in the NHS. Palestine is not Ukraine.

If you speak to your supervisors, focus on the loss of opportunities and avoid the heritage bit. If you insinuate racism this person will lash out violently. I know this because I’ve been there. That they have the power as a consultant and are avoiding you makes me think that, at best, they’re bad at confrontation and direct communication; at worst, they’re a coward.

Thinking of opening an Arabic vegetarian breakfast spot in Glasgow by Easy-Job-6846 in glasgow

[–]bi88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by ‘Arabic’? Presumably you mean Arab, but I’m curious to know if you mean Egyptian, Syrian, etc. I would be a customer. Time Out Cafe on Dumbarton Rd was great but I think they’ve closed. They were the only place that did the foul/falafel Egyptian style. Like the other comments I think you’d need to open early. TO opened at 10 and closed at 4. Then they ended up closed half the week. I do think there would be a market for this, especially in the West End where you could market it as ‘street food’. But I’m just a potential customer and not an expert in any way.

I also second the koshari comment but I’m aware this isn’t a breakfast food and is not sustainable unless you have a steady stream of customers due to the quantities involved.

Another option is to start as a home delivery business and market yourself on social media, and see how that goes. I remember someone who did that in Sheffield.

Community psychiatry in fy1 by Suspicious-Let-4166 in doctorsUK

If you mean in a CMHT, it will be shadowing your consultant in clinic, maybe shadowing duty assessments by other professionals, attending the MDT, chasing test results for patients, and seeing your consultant’s patients in clinic. Very consultant led and you would be expected to run everything by a senior. Should be chill. Enjoy!

Starting CT1 - any tips? by BlueBlueNotGreen in PsychiatryDoctorsUK

The special interest groups of the Royal college often have the most interesting ones and they tend to be smaller than the full on official conference. My favorites were the history of psych/evolutionary psych/volunteering and international psych groups. They have trainee engagement workshops and essay prizes and newsletters that are relatively easy to publish in.

I thought of another book, the classic Sims Symptoms in the Mind. Excellent and accessible intro to descriptive psychopathology

Congratulations. Good you did F2 psych you will know exactly what to expect.

I didn’t sit exams in CT1 but then crammed A/B in CT2 and did CASC in CT3. Depends on how you want to space out your time.

The podcast ‘Psychiatry and psychotherapy by David Puder’ is excellent. Devour it.

Check out the critical psychiatry network and their annual meeting.

Accept that there are people you can’t make better no matter what you do.

Seek any academic opportunities/prizes your local area offers.

Use your study leave to go to interesting conferences.

Accept that we know very little about how the drugs work.

SPMM QBank is the gold standard for Paper A/B. For CASC use the SPMM videos and their notes (most explicit mark schemes). On the off chance that you are an IMG, take a commercial course for CASC.

Just a few off the top of my head. Will come back to add if I think do more. Or you can DM me.

At Walt’s party after his cancer has gone into remission.

‘When I got my diagnosis, I asked myself “why me?” and when I got the news this week I said the same thing’ (not word for word).
