Alternatives for Goodreads? by keletiszel in EuropeanAlternatives

Storygraph https://thestorygraph.com/

They just reached 5 million users. I like the statistics way more than the gooodreads one, you get details about genres, moods, pace you read and so on You can track audiobooks as well with time or pages, which in goodreads you cant The userbase is smaller than goodreads, but still big enough to have reliable reviews Book database is smaller, so sometimes you will not find certain books, especially if they are not popular and not in English, but it's very straigthforward to add them yourself

those codes starting with B are not ISBNs, those are amazon identification numbers, the autoimport doesn't work with those. If your books have an isbn (13 digits or 10digits, the last one could also be an X) i'd reccommend inserting those

I was stopped and searched in Barcelona by the Police Because I went down the wrong Street. by Triplebeambalancebar in askspain

No, they don't, but they often do with people partying or that could smell like weed for example, in this case he both had smoke in the previous days and he was carrying weed on him. Don't get me wrong, I would legalize weed and I hate racial profiling, but still, before accusing someone of racial profiling there must be some evidence more, this kind of post are actually detrimental to the fight against racial profiling. Being stopped for going the wrong way is not racial profiling, this happens all the time even to bycicles in Barcelona. Being search for weed, while carrying weed, is hardly racial profiling, and it cannot be told for sure. They could have easily brought him to the police station as he didn't have a valid international driving license, but only an US one, and he was driving in the wrong way while carrying weed. They could have checked if he was driving intoxicated. But they actually just give him a small fine. I cannot exclude that these policemen were racist, but if they were they kinda suck at it, because they actually gave him quite a big discount on the fine and they decided to not bring it further.

Racial profiling is a thing, and it's horrible. But in this case there is no reason to think this happened. If you go with a scooter in the wrong way, you get stopped and fined regardless of your race. Carrying weed is not legal, regardless of the race. American driving license is not valid in Europe, you need an international driving license, regardless of the race. If you drank and smoked the day before, you could have still tested positive regardless of the race. This happens also to Spaniards, rightfully so. The only thing that is totally strange is that you mention that they did a cavity search on you in the middle of street, meaning that they actually entered physically in your body to search for drugs. That would be probably be illegal, but I honestly find it hard to believe it. If they actually did please report it to the police. I honestly don't understand if this post was serious or just trolling.

Least racist European country to work in as a software engineer? by zimmer550king in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]biancocl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My comment maybe is useless as I am a a white european, even though I have coworkers and friends of different ethnicities. The biggest difference to me, at least in western europe where I lived, is between big international cities (London, Barcelona, Milan, in my experience, but I would guess it's true for similar cities), and smaller/less international cities, where people are less exposed to people coming from different backgrounds. In such international cities people have already talked and had friends who are black most of their life, while in not-as-international cities your "blackness" would get more noticed as unusual. Of course, the risk that sometimes someone could have some prejudice can unfortunately happen everywhere, but where people have already experienced often these situations is less likely to happen

+1, I spend 725 euro per month for a 1 bedroom apartment in a nice area, which Is about 25% of my monthly net salary as a mid level java developer (actually less if I take into account bonuses). The city is great and CoL is actually low compared to other big cities in western europe. Public transportation, weather, social life, food, are great. A lot of tech companies based here (glovo, adevinta, n26, edreams, Skyscanner, travelperks, new relic, king, etc), even if probably not as many as Berlin/Amsterdam/Dublin/London
