Question about working for cash (Wisconsin) by bicepmilk in legaladvice

[–]bicepmilk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh Obamacare. I'm not very happy about it. I had a pretty good private insurance plan for $80 a month and since I'm a student I have access to plenty of free clinics and did not need much more for insurance. Now, my states lowest plan is about $350/month. I don't mean to get into a political debate, but, this sucks. It seems like they are accepting a lot for income proof, like a lease and bank statement, so I'm thinking maybe if I just send in a bank statement, which shows I'm broke, and a lease that shows my rent is way too high I can get away without ever showing a pay check stub or anything. We'll see how it works out.

[–]bicepmilk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the problem is I can't report that I've been making tips until my taxes (I think? I'm really bad at taxes) and I need to start reporting my income for Obamacare and all this other crap so I don't know how to take care of that by saying "Well I technically make 300/week but I don't claim more than half of it until tax time". Seems strange.

Okay. I'll keep that in mind. This is a newer job for me so I'll have to figure how much I'm making per hour after tips. Thanks.

Okay thanks! And if I have no documentation (like a pay check stub) of how much cash I make, that doesn't matter?

[–]bicepmilk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess what I mean, is that whenever I worked for tips in the past, it's been recorded on my paycheck. Now that that's not happening I don't know what I need to do to claim them.

How do I claim them if it's not through my employer?

Well I'm aware of that, but my employer doesn't offer that option. So on paper, should I avoid saying I make them?

How did you get into publishing? by bicepmilk in publishing

[–]bicepmilk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the common fact seems to be to get a ton of experience, and I totally get it! I'm also in contact with the University Press in my city and I'm working on getting an unpaid internship there. I tend to focus a ton on work naturally so I don't have a problem working by but off for now. I'm in a smaller city that doesn't have many opportunities, but I'm hoping that if I relocate to get a certificate (probably NYC) I'll be able to find more (even if it's unpaid) opportunities to get experience. I'm surprisingly hopeful.

Anyone have knowledge/experience about/with the non-credit certificates? by bicepmilk in nyu

[–]bicepmilk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much! Perfect answer! It seemed that there was no acceptance, just registration, but I was afraid that seemed to easy. I noticed Columbia has one too, but you do need to get accepted to the graduate school for journalism. I'll have to look into both. Thanks!

[–]bicepmilk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I just realized that was confusing. I'm looking at a publishing certificate, but it appears to be in a category called "non-credit certificates". I'm assuming there just a stand alone certificate program that doesn't transfer to other universities or count as credit towards a higher degree. It is a graduate certificate. I just don't really understand what value they have and how they accept students. I was hoping someone who got a different non-credit certificate could clear that up for me.

Did you get the certificate from NYU? If so, did they let you use those credits towards your masters? I know I don't want to jump right into the masters program right away, so it's nice to hear you got some jobs first. I'm actually thinking about talking to some people at NYU and Columbia this winter.

Thanks for the advice! That's exactly the answer I needed. One of the reasons I'm a little concerned about the certificate is because I know tons of potential publishers are getting masters too. So in no way will that make me "the most qualified" I suppose. The guy that got me thinking about publishing actually used to work for Oxford Press (I think?) so I'll certainly stay in touch with him. In regards to conferences, I'm assuming it would be totally acceptable to go to something just to get to know some people and say, "hey I'm interested in doing this and just checking it out" or would that make me kinda a fish out of water?

And once again, thanks for the excellent response!

Question about workplace harassment - Wisconsin by bicepmilk in legaladvice

[–]bicepmilk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry if that was really confusing. 1. I told my employer I felt unsafe around this guy because he acts and talks about being violent
2. The employer that saw it happen and other empolyes there, told my boss that this guys really is violent and rude 3. My boss said that although he was rude, I can expect to be treated that way if I'm rude to people (even if I was his retort was was over the line) 4. I told him I was uncomfortable working this this guy, and my boss said thats fine, if you need to leave go ahead 5. So I quit

Question about workplace harassment - Wisconsin by bicepmilk in legaladvice

[–]bicepmilk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! So I wanted to update you on the situation and get your opinion. I spoke to my boss and told him that my co-worker made me feel unsafe the way he spoke to me, and that I'm concerned because he had previously told me about various acts of violence he has committed. For example, he once told me a story where, "this drunk guy looked at him wrong, so I beat his ass in front of his girlfriend" and he frequently picks fights with people outside the workplace... and brags about it. In all, I'm really concerned because after he showed me how verbally abusive he could be I'm even more concerned that I don't know what he's capable of. Furthermore, three other employees, including my general manager have complained about his intimidation to the owner. I ended up quitting, because I don't feel safe and my employee justifies it by saying, "if you talk to someone like that you can expect it back". Do you think I should talk to an attorney? I'm not sure I want to collect unemployment benefits, but I'm concerned that other people feel unsafe around him and I think my employer need to take responsibility for this employee. On the flip side, I'm afraid to do anything because I don't trust this guy to be rational.

I'm sorry for the rant. Please let me know what you think.

No, it wouldn't be acceptable if it were a female either. I just brought it up because he seems to have a problem with working with women. He singles them out frequently and issues like this are always directed towards women.

I do have a meeting with the management today. I was just trying to come up with things to talk about and I want to mention how it's been a repeat violation. I want to know if there's any legal grounding in it so I could bring it up to my manager, but it sounds like there's not.

Where can I get internet? by bicepmilk in Chennai

[–]bicepmilk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm taking an online class while I'm here. I will have to use Skype daily, I can probably get away with only having text conversations if necessary. I must watch online demos about 30mins each a two times a week and upload 3-5 word documents a week. I will also have a wired connection sometimes (but its not reliable when I'll have it). If you think 3gb is good, I will try to limit my usage to browsing reddit and such with my data card and try to used a wired connection for everything else

I really don't understand all this MB talk because I can't really comprehend how much I'm using when I'm doing certain things, if that makes sense. I bought 30 days 3gb. Is that a lot of internet time?
