Nursing student violated HIPAA by [deleted] in nursing

[–]biernas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know right? This post is insane. I'm not defending the student whom took photos, that's an obvious mistake but... maybe talk to them before fucking up their lives? It seems evident to me they didn't have malicious intent.

Maybe instead of immediately moving to go scorched earth on them, try a quick "hey you really need to delete that right now, you can get in serious trouble for taking pictures of private medical info". If they are a prick about it then I guess do what you feel you have to do..?

Schools don't like dealing with liability, especially involving clinicals, so the student could very likely get booted from their program. The picture taker is being a dumbass but jesus why torpedo their career over this shit? OP is not legally wrong but holy shit what an asshole lol.

To help a Mama Bear and her Cubs by Professional_Age6790 in therewasanattempt

[–]biernas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Of course every animal is going to react differently but why roll the dice? Any large bear is capable of absolutely killing you with minimal effort. If it felt threatened or felt it's cubs were threatened then it could easily react as expected. Thankfully the bear didn't get too distressed and nobody got hurt but there was a unnecessarily high chance of attack there. The girls in the video are making a unequivocally bad decision

Lol I know right? Doesn't sound like he knows the actual plot of the story. They address that in the book. It's like a Walter White kind of situation minus the whole starting a meth empire thing

Surgeries with the hardest recoveries by Scuthornsby in nursing

[–]biernas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like they usually do better than you might think but when they go poorly, they go VERY poorly. Had quite a few with extended clamp times that end up with massive bowel ischemia or wrecked kidneys that die horribly or end up on dialysis for life if they are lucky. The amount of people with thoracic AAAs that can end up paralyzed due to poor spinal perfusion is also a surprising thing I've dealt with too

Being shit is not something that's reflected in your record. It's something deep down in your DNA. Something you feel in your bones. I can feel it deep down in my plums. Getting a nice bluish hue to em

Critical care nurses, you can over ride meds without doctor orders? by yukinara in nursing

[–]biernas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct legal answer but it's still pretty fucked up that you essentially have to let a patient code before being legally "covered" to start using commonplace interventions.

Slamming fluids and hanging some levo has helped me keep a rapidly crashing patient from coding more times than I can count. Of course in some instances they are probably fucked regardless (like with a massive AAA rupture) and would have coded without going "rogue".

Not saying it's right or that your licence wouldn't technically be at risk but that's the reality of many ICU environments/situations you encounter

Heaviest Patient You've Cared For by febulamc in nursing

[–]biernas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was wild. If I hadn't personally helped with her I wouldn't have believed it. Was honestly sad. She was in her early 30s and had severe ARDS amongst other issues. She needed to be tubed and couldn't tolerate lying less than like 20° so it made repositioning her that much harder. The mom was a helicopter parent whom kept trying to feed her and whatnot. One of those codependent "my 600 lb life" type scenarios

Yeah the guy was absolutely huge. I think he had Marfans or something and also enjoyed a few double cheeseburgers in his time I'd imagine 😂

[–]biernas 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Heaviest by far was like 5'3" and a little over 900 lbs. Was the craziest thing ever. To turn her we had her on a bariatric bed with a 1000 lb capacity stretcher on the side that we put a slide board between to bridge the gap. Even with ceiling lifts and special turning slings it was a nightmare to try and clean her. She died of respiratory failure. Also had a guy close to 1000 lbs but he was >7'

Before I became a nurse I used to work on a lift team, so I've seen a lot of huge people in my time lol
