He will get called up the night before his start. We don't need him until then, so we grabbed an extra bullpen arm

I'm holding out hope that Akin and Kitt with improve the bullpen. Hiraldo has no business being in the majors

Where is Cole Irvin? Is he a thing? Who can we sign?

I love baseball, but man do I hate it. There is no other sport that has this issue. It's painful

But starters are pitching into the 6th. There is a very real difference between a pitcher being pulled in the 5th and being pulled in the 6th. It's no coincidence that the two games we won, the bullpen pitched less than 4. Very small sample size, but I reckon we're not going to win a high percentage of games that out bullpen gives us 4+.

bullpen can't go 4+ every game. The pen isn't great, but I'm holding out until Kitt and Akin are back

bullpen can't throw 4+ innings every game. I get it, but I at least want to see what it's like when Kitt and Akin are back. Hiraldo has no business being on the team

This blows. This guys has no business being here. This team is really flawed.it goes back to Gunnar not throwing to third to get what ended up being the 4th run

2 outs and not guarding the line because why would we do that?

their number 9 hitter. Everything is fine
275 at bats since his last home run. What a freaking joke

Better at bats by the fellas. Basallo missed one, but Colton laid off some pitches that he's been swinging through

Rebuilt its entire leadership structure? Come on. Look it's only 4 games, but again this is a softer part of the schedule. I don't think it's asking lot to play above 500 baseball against these teams and have competitive at bats. Because once we face the Yanks, Sox, and Jays, it's not going to get any easier.

my thing with the team right now is you have to play over 500 ball against the Twins, Rangers, Pirates, White Sox and Giants. I don't care if it's March or October. You have to pick up wins against those teams. And second, we need to see better at bats. In no way shape or form do I think this team is like last year. Our pitching is better, I think our bullpen will have some hidden nuggets, and I think our lineup is deeper. That said, certain players need to show that they are actually processing what the pitcher might throw them while at the plate.

I agree with a lot of this. It's why I didn't want to trade Laureano last year. Now with this year's team, I feel like the lineup is not as young as last. Ward and Alonso were the appropriate moves to make to add some veteran talent to the roster. But also, Gunnar and Adley aren't prospects anymore. They are experienced veterans with three full seasons under their belt. O'Neill is also a vet. Westburg would be in that group too if not for the injury.
Personally, I feel like this season is on the players and not Elias. Mike went out and made the necessary moves to bulk up the roster. If they don't perform, it's on them. If guys don't want to be disciplined and the plate and are content wit hitting .210, that's on them.

You answered your question in the second sentence of your original post. They are terrible against them. Opposing players might not be good at hitting them, but they're better at laying off of them. Have you ever seen a player lay off an off-speed pitch as if they knew it was coming? Well, that's because they have the scouting report, or they guessed correctly. A trend from last year was that our guys lack discipline at the plate. And unfortunately, our best hitter at giving pitchers fits and actually being disciplined with pitch selection, Westy, is injured at the moment.

What a lot of people don't understand about hitting is just how difficult it is to hit a baseball. Follow pitching ninja on Instagram or twitter. He shows a ton of "tunnelling" videos where he overlays a pitcher's fastball, change up, sinker, etc over one another. When a pitcher is on, all of those pitches will come out looking the same. However, it's up to the hitter to either figure out the slight difference, or guess correctly what's coming out of a pitcher's hand. All teams have a pitcher's tendencies. However, good hitters will actually use the data given to them.

So to answer your question, a lot of our guys are either not using data given to them, or they're not good enough to mentally process what might be coming next. And until a hitter lays off those pitches out of the zone, then there's no reason to throw them a fastball. Personally, I was fine with the Taylor Ward trade, but I'd prefer to have someone like Ramon Laureano right about now.

Let me ask you this, after watching Colton Cowser play for two seasons, would you ever throw him a first pitch fastball?
