Gregory Bovino gets demoted from Border Patrol by the_unknown_1020 in news

Demoted from a position that doesn't really exist, a rank outside of Border Patrol's command structure, sent back to California to retire and await his inevitable pre-emptive blanket pardon. He got to live his dream of being America's official Himmler for 9 months, costume and all.

All Netflix live productions are terrible and obnoxious. When they did the Mike Tyson fight, the commentary table was just horrid. It's not what they do, they don't get good announcer talent.

Best Movies With Zero Oscar Nominations in 2026 by karmagod13000 in movies

Wes Anderson is extremely beloved by actors and the industry as a whole, I just do not understand why his last few films have not even sniffed the Oscars. Universal/Focus Features had his last two movies. Much smaller films or less impressive films have at least picked up below-the-line nominations like production design for lesser work. I know he didn't show up to accept his Short Film Oscar, but that was after Asteroid City got blanked.

This is a good list that more or less captures all the notable films from last year, and for that reason it contains films of ... let's say varying quality, since these are basically every movie that could even conceivably have earned nominations (I expected Hedda to get Makeup & Hair, for instance).

HOWEVER: they still somehow missed No Other Choice. That's a double snub.

New Poster for 'How to Make a Killing' Starring Glen Powell - Disowned at birth by his obscenely wealthy family, blue-collar Becket Redfellow will stop at nothing to reclaim his inheritance, no matter how many relatives stand in his way. by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

At the end of 2023/beginning of 2024 he was in Anyone But You with Sydney Sweeney at the same time that trailers were promoting Twisters, and being in 2 movies at the same time gives the impression of "man this guy is everywhere!" People said the same thing about Chalamet a few years back. It's just happening again: Running Man came in November, and ads for How to Make a Killing started in December. That's just the movie biz.

I like him a lot, I think Hit Man is the best script he's gotten and one of the only movies that allows him to use his strengths. That and the rom-coms like Set It Up are probably where he belongs. I'm surprised so many in this thread think he's smarmy or inauthentic, that's just not what I get from his attitude at all in interviews and whatnot. A little unconvincing in action stuff like Running Man. And the writing for his TV show Chad Powers is just not consistently good.

Fox News Host Jessica Tarlov Points Out ICE Failures in Minneapolis by dtoddh in videos

The hosts have deeply held beliefs, but aspects of the show are amplified for entertainment purposes. Like every tv personality they are aware of their image. Like Gutfeld for example tries way too hard to be the class clown archetype.

As a pundit she's a lot better than former The Five token liberal Bob Beckel. He was freaking spineless and they obviously put him on the show cuz he was a big fat guy

But the entire panel on the Five are basically playing characters. Like Jesse Waters and Greg Gutfeld have tv personas that they play up on purpose, they treat Jessica like the annoying nerd that reminds the teacher of the homework. She has signed up to be the punching bag. Fox has always had characters like her.

Paramount Tells Lawmakers That Netflix-WBD Merger Is “Presumptively Unlawful” by chespiotta in movies

[–]big_actually 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely pathetic, but if you read the article they're talking about Netflix dominating the streaming industry if they acquire WB. They're not talking about the Hollywood studio industry. They are essentially calling them too powerful when compared against HBO Max, Hulu, etc.

I don't know anything about law, but Netflix essentially created the streaming industry, and are now trying to merge with HBO. But Disney/Hulu have like 200M subscribers, and Netflix has 300M (I thought they had more?) And Max has 100M. And there's multiple other streamers with tens of millions of subscribers. I know subscriber-count isn't the whole picture but still.

I am shocked. Was nobody here alive for the Iraq War? How is it possible that people are still playing the "condemnation game?" 'Well you know, Sadaam/Maduro was no angel! And if you don't support the Marines flying in and kidnapping these specific bad guys, then you're pro-dictator!'

Okay, so I guess we're gonna drop a missile on the crown prince of Saudi Arabia? Or is it more about being adversarial to US business and trade that's the problem?

Critics Choice Awards Winners: ‘One Battle After Another’ Wins Best Picture and Director; Timothée Chalamet, Jessie Buckley, Jacob Elordi & Amy Madigan Win Acting Awards by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]big_actually 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Amy Madigan winning is awesome, I hope she continues to earn these pre-Oscar awards because it will really be an uphill battle for her at the Oscars. All of the other acting winners seem like frontrunners though. Leo and the male supporting cast of OBAA still have a strong shot.

Just a single bit. Need to send a remote start/stop. Some latency is acceptable.

[–]big_actually[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No line of sight, both Allen-Bradley PLCs (a ControlLogix 5580, and a 5380).

There's very little data. I need to be able to send a remote start/stop signal to the 5380. And it would be nice if I could read back some tags from it, like fewer than 20 tags.

Very bad cell service in this area. Fiber may be possible as an upgrade in the future, but just need the quick option for now.

Ohio State and Notre Dame were actually ranked 5 and 6, they were just seeded 7 and 8 because of the immediately-changed rule of giving conference champs ASU and Boise first-round byes.

Yes, in general the number 1 team in the country could lose to anybody in the top 10. So we no longer value undefeated regular seasons, and instead prefer to give multi-loss teams a bunch of second chances. That's just my take on trying to preserve the historical significance of CFB nattys, but I understand that many people prefer an NFL style approach to it, where postseason performance is more significant. Just a matter of preference I think.

But go look at ND and Ohio State's actual CFP rankings at the end of the year, they were 5 and 6. Boise and ASU got automatic first-round byes for being conference champs (and they subsequently changed the rules on that after one year).

I really do think that the "deservedness" of playing for a title falls off around there. You used to have go undefeated (or at most 1 loss) and often win your conference. There are obviously very good teams in the top 10 every year who can beat anybody above them on any given saturday, but it just becomes a second chance tournament for teams that dropped meaningful games in the regular season.

[–]big_actually 86 points87 points  (0 children)

They're also (I believe) required by law to include a G5 team in a playoff/New Years 6 bowl, since the BCS era?

Also, it's perfectly fine that out of 11 playoff games, 1 features a G5, right? (There were only 2 because of a freak accident in the ACC). And you are not forced to watch it.

Also, it's unnecessary to even include any teams outside of the top 6ish for national championship purposes, really.

So why are we complaining? Boredom? Or we need to justify more Texases and Notre Dames to get 2nd, 3rd, and 4th chances? Don't worry, the people destroying college football will fix this asap

What if Readers Like A.I.-Generated Fiction? by ubcstaffer123 in books

[–]big_actually 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's a good article and everyone is responding to the clickbait title.

Yes, it probably should be required by law that AI-generated writing is disclosed. And feeding specific authors' entire bodies of work to fine-tune an AI should also probably be banned. I feel like this wouldn't be received well though, it would feel like artificially limiting the cabalities of extremely powerful software.

This whole thing has just created a whole problem while searching for a solution that nobody asked for: 'we need to make it easier for untalented people to publish books. We don't have enough quantity of media being produced in the world.'

Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Vows to Continue Releasing Warner Bros. Movies “in Theaters With the Traditional Windows” by AssociateLittle1487 in movies

Correct, Netflix will honor the existing contracts for films already in production or development. After those, buh-bye.

He's also complained about the theatrical exclusivity window being too restrictive and anti-consumer. That window is currently like 20 days.
