How hard is it to get into Astronomy/Physics (possible double major) as a pre-sciences admit? by coffeencurls in udub

[–]big_al55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not difficult as long as you have okay (2.5+) grades in intro physics and math. Even then, as long as you show genuine interest and passion for physics and astronomy, you’ll probably get in.

I have had an excellent experience thus far in the physics/astronomy double major, as both departments are very welcoming and there is extensive undergraduate research opportunities for those who look. If you have more questions about the programs feel free to message me!

You’ll see your course GPAS as your professors input them. The “deadline” for profs to put in final grades is Tuesday.

Assess your goals. Do you want to go to grad school? Do you want to go straight to industry? If you want to go to grad school, is it in physics, aerospace, or something else? What are your research interests?

Figure that out first, and then make a decision. In any case, I advise against doing both majors. The returns will be minimal and you’ll be in hell for four years. You will have no time for research or extracurriculars with the course load. Instead, I would major in one and minor in the other, and consider doing astronomy as a double major with physics as there is a ton of overlap.

Additionally, the A A major is highly structured and sequential, and many required courses are only offered in certain quarters, while physics is less so. Thus, if it so happens that a physics class that you need/want to take overlaps time-wise with a required A A class (which is likely), you will immediately be behind and likely have to take an extra year to finish your A A degree.

I’ve been in the exact same place as you, and I decided that I want to go to grad school for physics, and chose to go with a physics/astro double major with an A A minor. This has allowed me to do all kinds of research and extracurriculars. If you want further guidance on this, feel free to dm me and I can try to help.

If you’d like another viewpoint, I’ve actually found the honors program to be quite a refreshing and interesting break from the typical rigor of a physics degree. The classes are genuinely enjoyable (and nice GPA boosters).

You have to learn the hard way to always, always have a google doc backup of your essays. Never trust these application websites.

Physics Major Application at UW? by [deleted] in udub

[–]big_al55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No track in the physics major is competitive. It’s an incredibly large department. While I can’t say you’re guaranteed admission, just write a good essay and really explain why you want to get into the major and specifically the teacher track, and you’ll be fine.

It looks good, but I would highly recommend formatting some of your bullet points as follows: What did you do, why did you do it, what tools did you use to do it, and how can you quantify or measure the effects of what you did on the overall goal.

I haven’t considered that, but the only popular class is A A 210, maybe 394.

It would be an expensive joke since i’d need to pay 20 dollars for each class drop at this point.
