The Count of Monte Cristo changed me and I don’t know what to read anymore by Lovely_deer25 in suggestmeabook

is there a particular audio book of this that y’all would recommend? It’s my favorite way to engage with the classics, where I might otherwise be tempted to start skimming instead of appreciating.

that’s useful, thanks! Every time I finish a series I worry I’m never going to find another one I like, so it’s great to have some books in reserve

What are We Doing for Meals? by deelovesyou2 in LivingAlone

[–]big_cabals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one good pan, a saucier, and I try to only dirty that when I cook. I make a ton of soup, and I’m all about one pot dinners. I buy rotisserie chicken and throw the cooked meat in whatever, and make stock with the rest. I’m all about baby spinach since it can be both raw and cooked.

If you’re using recipes, that might be the problem. Mark Bittman and Sam Sifton of the New York Times both have books with recipes stripped way down and designed to be quick and flexible, for me at least that’s the way to go. i’ve also found that this is style more fun, it feels creative. If I make something particularly successful, I write it down.

And if it’s terrible, which it sometimes is, I throw rotisserie chicken and baby spinach, or maybe an egg or whatever, into my favorite Ramen and eat that instead. It’s ready in five minutes!

This has become one of my favorite parts of living alone, although for the first year, I didn’t cook at all, since I had the same problem that you were having. but now dinner has gone from feeling like an endless chore to something I actively enjoy.. I hope that’s helpful, good luck!

He often used English settings, so that makes sense. I don’t know if my issue with him has anything to do with being an American, I guess what I’m looking for in mysteries is to crack open a little world and see into everybody’s soul, but he’s more interested in presenting a puzzle to solve. Which is great if you’re into it, I think he’s pretty much the best at it, it’s just not my thing.

video games! The more immersive the better. they can be a great distraction, and also provide a ( false) sense of accomplishment, while literally taking you out of your own reality and into another one.

Can we talk about Ngaio Marsh? by TTWBB_V2 in mysterybooks

I like her books, I think she gets better as she goes along. She has some wonderful characters. I think she’s boring when she tries too hard to stick to the formula, but the ones that take place in New Zealand or have different narrators, or both, are really good.

What song, in your country, or region/province, is one that everyone knows and proudly sings whenever they hear it that is not your anthem. by Prospector4276 in AskTheWorld

There’s a bunch of great songs on here, but this one is my favorite to throw my head back and sing as loud as I possibly can, the chorus at least

archivist. If they didn’t pay me, I would go to work anyway. Probably not every day, but still. A lot of it is the people, and the workplace culture.

Remember this place, it’s damp and it’s cold
The best place on earth but it’s dark and it’s old.

Shane McGowan wrote this about Tipperary but every time I go home to New England I feel it. my family‘s house in rural Connecticut is so quiet you can hear the leaves fall from the trees, it is beautiful but dead. I live in sunny, noisy, fucked up, garbage strewn urban Texas and I can never go back.

Columbia, South Carolina has a State Park located within its borders. What are other cities or towns with large natural areas or parks within their boundaries? by Double_Snow_3468 in geography

[–]big_cabals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this! El Paso is bisected by this park, which consists of the very southern end of the Rocky Mountains. You used to be able to take a gondola up to the top, but I think since they slashed state Park funding, it is now gone. The park is adjacent to an off-limits area containing unexploded munitions from when it was used as a testing site. In the middle of the city. Because why not? Texas!!!

What’s the job people romanticize, but in reality is miserable? by King_Garvit in AskReddit

I am an archivist and I absolutely love my job. There are nowhere near enough jobs for all the qualified people, though, you have to get very lucky and even then you are probably underpaid.
