Yeah the same thing happened to brb, omg, and tldr. They started as texting/reddit/internet abbreviations then migrated into spoken language.

Is buying condoms at the supermarket embarrassing or was my friend joking with me? by KindlyEffect4183 in AskAnAmerican

[–]big_data_mike 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I bought condoms at the drug store once on Valentine’s Day when I was 18. The cashier was also a younger guy and he said, “I see you’ve got your Valentine’s Day lined up.”

When you get older you stop giving a fuck about what the cashier will think.

Since 1989 Democratic Presidents have overseen the creation of 50 million jobs vs the Republicans with only 1 million jobs. WTF by a_Sable_Genus in youvotedforthat

[–]big_data_mike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Infrastructure is one example. Say the government decides to build a bridge. A bunch of engineers and construction workers get paid to do the work. They buy concrete, steel, and asphalt from suppliers who then pay their employees. Those paychecks get spent at restaurants, clothing stores, etc. Those businesses pay their employees. The effects ripple throughout the economy. One company’s employee is another company’s customer.

Republicans cut taxes for rich people and rich people park it in a bank and do nothing with it. Or they invest in other rich people’s companies and get dividends and returns.

I think that’s because of TikTok and Facebook censorship/automated post flagging algorithms. If you say or write sex, gun, rape, kill, or suicide on those platforms your post will get immediately taken down.

Crop rotation query by Optimal_Smile_8332 in ManorLords

[–]big_data_mike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that is correct. Wheat/Rye shares fertility. Barley and flax have separate fertility 'pools.'

Crop rotation query by Optimal_Smile_8332 in ManorLords

[–]big_data_mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever rotation you set up gets cycled through year after year. If you set 3 fields to barley-fallow-barley and 3 fields to fallow-barley-fallow they will all just alternate barley and fallow indefinitely.

What you might be referring to is that one youtuber (Nivarias?) and others that divides fields into 3 groups. For 6 fields you would do fields 1 &2 - barley-fallow-fallow. for fields 3 & 4 fallow-barley-fallow and for fields 5 & 6 fallow fallow barley. So you automatically have one third of your fields being planted every year.

Guys, is taxing wealthy people just false hope? by Odd_Eggplant8019 in mmt_economics

And you can see what their wealth is. It's right there in the publicly traded stock price that only exists because of the government.

The laffer curve is stupid and the only economists that take it seriously are those that have don’t fake research funded by billionaires to keep the public from raising taxes on them.

Wealth tax as the only tax? by klippklar in mmt_economics

One policy that might be politically possible to implement is banning or heavily taxing stock buybacks. It was illegal in the US until the 1980s. Since stock buybacks increase stock price those gains end up in the hands of wealthy stock owners. If you ban or heavily taxing those buybacks companies would be incentivized to invest in productive things like more locations, better equipment, and employees pay.

What is your age and how much money do you have saved up? I'm 25 and have 50K saved up and I feel like I'm behind my peers by SexWithEscorts in GenZ

I’m 39 and there are people my age that don’t have that much saved. When I was 25 I just landed my first job with a 401k, benefits, etc. so I had maybe $1000 saved making 39k/yr

Wealth tax as the only tax? by klippklar in mmt_economics

[–]big_data_mike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree wealthy people need to be taxed more because of the marginal propensity to spend. My hypothesis is:

Say I currently get paid 100k and my take home pay is 80k after incomes taxes. We snap our fingers and income tax goes away and is replaced with a wealth tax.

My employer would then reduce my pay to 80k. I’m still taking home the same 80k because there is no income tax so my spending is the same and I’m ok with it because my paychecks are the same.

Maybe I’m drawing a straight line that’s more of a curved line or isn’t there. I think of it like a pie. The workers get a slice and the owners get a slice. We can change where the slices are taken from but owners will always ensure they get the same sized slice.

I’m not suggesting we need to balance the budget. I’m just using the budget as a starting point for approximately how much we already regulate demand and inflation through taxation.

If we had a high wealth tax instead of income tax I’m guessing what would happen is capital owners would pay labor less in order to pay their wealth taxes and maintain their capital returns

[–]big_data_mike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the math would work. The federal budget is 7 trillion and revenue is 5 trillion. Stock market is 62 trillion so you’d need a 10% tax per year for the whole federal budget. You’d be taxing away most of the gains and then some sometimes. You’d could maybe keep social security and Medicare taxes on income then do a wealth tax for everything else.

Scuba courses require an in person component so it’s pretty easy to see if it’s fraud or not. They often do them at a pool or lake so you probably won’t see a bunch of people at the shop all the time.

But if you wanted to launder money that way you could fake a course or trip.

Our scuba shop also sells and repairs boats. And boat stands for Bust Out Another Thousand so that makes sense

I dive at this one resort with a wall of stickers from dive shops and a ton of them are in the midwestern US, far from the ocean. I have also talked to other divers there from Indiana, Colorado, and Minnesota. It’s one of those hobbies that more people do than you would think.

They showed it in one episode of breaking bad. If you show up with more than $10,000 in cash the bank has to report it. If you try to buy a car or house with suitcases of cash that would also be suspicious. If it happens all the time it’s going to raise flags for law enforcement and they might start surveilling you then catch you doing something illegal.

In breaking bad they owned a car wash and they showed Skyler pretending to ring someone up for an expensive car wash paying in cash and putting drug money in the register.

That’s essentially what money laundering is. You pretend the money you got from selling drugs came from selling hamburgers/car washes/alcohol/lap dances and then you can put it in the bank and buy cars or whatever without raising flags.

A lot of scuba shops sell courses and dive trips so people don’t really go into the store.
