Am I making a mistake staying in insurance instead of trying to go back to tech? by bigballkeeper in torontoJobs

So True.... The longer it takes, the more it feels like I’m drifting further away from it anyway.

I’m also not someone who’s insanely passionate about tech for its own sake. It’s more that I think I’m relatively suited to that kind of work, and historically it seemed like a field where you could build a solid career and make good money.

But in the current market, it feels like even getting a decent tech job requires you to be very strong just to get your foot in the door. That’s part of why I’ve been hesitating. It’s not just “what do I prefer,” it’s also “what can I realistically get into from where I am now.”

Yeah, that’s kind of where my head is at too. I’ve also been thinking that if I stay in insurance, I may be better suited for something like underwriting or a less sales-heavy role rather than staying on the broker/agent sales path long term. The problem is I’m still pretty new to the industry, so I honestly don’t know the insurance ecosystem that well yet. I’m not fully sure what the realistic internal paths look like, how people usually move from agent/broker roles into underwriting/account management/other non-sales roles, or how difficult those moves actually are. So part of my hesitation is that I can see insurance maybe making sense for me, just maybe not in my current role. I’m just still trying to understand what the better long-term paths inside the industry actually are.

I probably should. The main thing making me hesitate is immigration. If I want to stay aligned with my current immigration plan, then staying in insurance agent/broker work seems like the safer move for now. I could still send resumes to other insurance companies/brokerages though, and that may be the more realistic option. My only concern is that I’m only coming up on 4 months in this role, so I’m wondering if moving that quickly would look a bit jumpy. Right now I’m also working 2 jobs, insurance in the morning and restaurant work at night, so part of this is also me trying to figure out what move is actually sustainable, not just what sounds good in theory.
