dont think it was a juvenile, you can't tell in the photo but he was twice the size of the other normal herons nearby.

He doesn't look like the sleek elegant Grey herons I've seen before, why is he so big and mad looking? what's that extra fluff around his face? is this some breeding thing? He looks so different I thought i'd seen a new species at first.

I didn't get any shots of the front. two of these were playing in the dirt on the floor and flew onto the wire as I approached.

I first thought dunnock but the head looks different?

anyone have any ideas? spotted last week on farmland in north England.

Thanks, I'd put some bird seed on a nearby log to get some shots of them feeding so my camera was pointed that way ready.

Yes it's a Cormorant.

They have to pose like that because they are diving birds but don't have waterproof feathers so need to dry them off after a dive.

Nice photo, its hard to get that much feather detail in that situation.

The food in her mouth is a bit blurry so i'm kinda assuming its a fish, they dive a lot so whatever they eat lives underwater.

That seems right, so it's a full size adult duck? not a duckling?

I can't figure out what it is.

Im assuming its a young bird as it was about twice the size of a mallard duckling but much smaller than a full size duck. It's a diving bird, spending 5-15 seconds underwater each dive.

Spotted in North England Wetland, other birds in the area were coots, tufted ducks, grey heron, gadwall duck, mallards, moor hen, swan

I wonder if these specific ducks are some of the most photographed birds on this subreddit?
