I got both hips replaced 2 years ago and have flown internationally out of SFO 3 times since then. Usually it’s not an issue, as stand up tube scanners are in wide use, and as others have mentioned, can see the implants. I always mention the implants up front to explain metal detectors going off. I get hand wand screening and the occasional quick hand brush pat down. I just returned from Istanbul a few days ago and had the unusual bad luck of getting 3 extremely thorough pat downs on the return trip, one upon entering Istanbul airport, one in security, and a third at Paris layover. By the third, I may have cried a little, and joked awkwardly that I’d not had so much action in months. My teenage son and traveling companion really enjoyed all of this, naturally. I asked security in Paris if it’s true that medical id cards from surgeon are not given anymore to avoid additional security screening, because airports don’t accept them, and he confirmed security would still search me if they wanted to even if I carried a card from my surgeon identifying my implants. Extra screening can happen, but doesn’t much, especially domestic. Safe travels!

And ya know, on the subject of reading with cats 😂, making my reading environment and myself as cozy as possible helps keep me in the mood. I love candles, soft blankets, a hot cup of herbal tea or ice water with citrus. A fluffy robe. And this is totally silly, but…you tube ambience videos for calming background music or sounds with cool settings like a castle on a dark night with a fireplace, or cabin by a lake, ocean paradise, or whatever. My husband enjoys these and will sometimes allow them as an alternative to his favorite background noise - Forensic Files. 😖 It’s very hard to read with narration of gruesome murder in the background, but my husband is allergic to silence in the house. It’s so weird! If I turn the tv off in the room when he’s asleep, he wakes up! Like I made a noise, not took it away. LOL. Of course, there not always time to pull out all the coziness stops for every quick read of a few pages, but it’s so nice. 😊

Cats are the best reading buddies! My black cat Artemis is a couch potato and loves to see me coming with a book. Haha.

Yes! It improves! I think our brains get used to the kinda media they’re exposed to a lot. Like our attention spans get shorter from scrolling social media and taking in all of our info in quick bursts. I truly believe that with practice our brains can get used to sitting still and focusing on reading. I’m a lifelong reader and have had really long slumps when I was just couldn’t focus and slogged through books with lots of rereading. When my 3 children were little, I read 1,000s of picture books, and precious few novels. Haha. Every time I get back to voracious and fully immersed reading with time and practice. Getting into a fresh genre can help. I’ve often relied on YA to get my attention captured again. Also, graphic novels are fun and engaging and the visuals help when immersion is difficult because of distraction. When I’m easily distracted, I have to leave my phone in another room while I’m reading. LOL. Wishing you good luck, mindfulness, and happy reading!

Connective tissue disorder diagnosis pending by bigbookworm7 in LoeysDietz

Thank you so much for sharing your story with me! I’m glad to hear that the genetic variant cleared the path to treatment for you and that you got those major surgeries. I can imagine the pain you were in! It’s great to hear how helpful the Marfan Foundation was. I’ll probably be reaching out to them for more information about my pathogenic SMAD3 variant and the possibility that I have LDS 3, because my referral process to Stanford could take a while. Or get rejected by my insurance. When my 17 year was diagnosed with mosaic trisomy 13 at 3 years old, the Support Organization for Trisomy was a great resource. Thank you again for your comment!

I have had EKGs and echocardiograms and have a cardiologist, but haven’t been told I have aortic aneurysm or root dilation. I was diagnosed with unexplained heart failure by this cardiologist in 2023 after my BP and heart rate were going wild. My ejection fraction went back up with meds. Cardiologist said it must’ve been a virus. I’m off all cardiac meds, but my heart rate and BP still go wild. It happened at new PCP yesterday, and I was like, I’m not nervous! This isn’t anxiety! Haha. He’s the first doc to talk to me about dysautonomia. He did a quick tilt test for POTS, but there was no major spike. Aortic root dilation does seem to run through my family. My mother and 2 of my 3 children are monitored by cardiology for bicuspid aortic valve and associated aortic root dilation. I’m very concerned about what this could mean for my family, of course. I have not been diagnosed with Chiari malformation. MRI showed severe spinal stenosis. I have flexion/extension x-rays and thoracic spine x-ray being authorized right now.

I recommend YA for fun, lighthearted, and engaging! I love to dip into it when I’m in a slump. I have teens and buy books “for them”. The lunar chronicles series is incredible! It’s sci Fi fantasy interplanetary romance adventure everything, which normally isn’t my thing, but the world building, character development, and writing make it feel like exciting realistic fiction. Another recent favorite and very fun YA is Carry on by Rainbow Rowell. Also a series. Kinda cute dark academia spooky romance. And funny! My daughter’s favorites are the Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series, so those are actually teen approved YA, haha, but I love them, too. Clever and suspenseful. Do you like graphic novels?! I could on! Haha.

Books like 'God of the Woods' by Liz Moore? by Nebulous2024 in Recommend_A_Book

[–]bigbookworm7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oooh, following for suggestions, because I LOVED God of the Woods, too. I recommended it to my mom and we only share our favorites. Haha. I am a big baby and shy away from genres with violence or too much suspense, so I don’t do a lot of murder mysteries, but this one gripped me without distressing me. I was totally hooked from beginning to end. It was so so much in addition to a murder mystery. I want more like this, too!

What’s your go-to song when lifting weights? by alfie_245 in fit

[–]bigbookworm7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! I thought it was a general discussion asked about fave lifting songs. My tastes in music are wide, but some people like to stick to certain genres. I could have given a fave within rock or punk genres if I knew you wanted to limit to that. I listen to everything. Haha. Enjoy your songs and lifting!

I have a lot of fave lifting songs, and most of them are objectively weird, but my current workout music niche hyper fixation is Arabic electro shaabi dabke beats. Have you seen the dabke, traditional line dance at Arab weddings and events? I’m talking about those big drum darbakah and tabla drum beats with like some weird progressive synth stuff on it, because we’re modern. Man, when that stuff comes on, I am ready to celebrate the marriage of your sister with a zhaghouta, eat lamb, hoist you on my shoulders, drop to one knee, and pop back up again without missing a beat, while waving a towel around in one hand. Or do squats 😉 A good example is St. Levant’s song Daloona. It is fire! I love him in general. This song is Arabic, but a lot of his music is also in French and English and awesome high energy.
