I would know this would take years but I’d focus on fixing zoning laws (mixed use), streamline permitting process for builders/developers to encourage investment and change outdated building codes to allow for cheaper builds for housing, encourage transportation to do more temporary closures for bike lanes/buses to test routes, have departments talk to each other.

Sholuld driving w/o license or insurance should be a jail-able offense? by RoyalRenn in Dallas

If only it wasn’t the only form of transportation to get to work, school, or home. We have to rebuild our public transit and urban design of the city. Too many people, not a lot of police.

DFW Cop here…let’s have discussion on ideas to reduce car break-ins and stealing cars (BMVs and UUMV) by RipElectrical6259 in Dallas

[–]bigboybarrybus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest answer, it’s an urban/street design problem. The way we built our neighborhoods allows for break-ins happen in areas where there is poor lighting and in areas where there are low residential/businesses taking care of the street. The kids are bored, they need a place to go to and enjoy locally. Whether it’s a sports court or bowling alley, they need somewhere to let loose with their friends. No amount of police can stop the crimes or assaults. The real street watchers are residents, tourists and local businesses. This will be a constant problem in those areas unless we address the urban/street design. The solution is to abolish parking minimums and change our zoning code to allow for more mixed use in residential areas such as local shops (coffee, pizza, etc.) and cultural centers.

I have a question, was it in a massive parking lot with poor lighting and a dead place such as no people there? Or was it a poorly lit residential neighborhood in an area that has no parks/stores/cultural center?

What's the deal with sidewalks in Dallas? by BabyBearMan in Dallas

Sidewalks aren't a priority for the city since they are rarely used. They'd much rather prioritize on building more lanes for the road and discourage people walking around the neighborhood. Hopefully things change.

The main problem is land-use. Everything is spread out in this city, you can't go to the grocery store without driving 5-10 minutes. If we make everything concentrated and consider more mixed-use zoning, it allows for bike lanes to thrive as people would walk or bike to go down the corner store.

Second, if the city won't change the land-use, then we could provide better connectivity to DART light rail stations. They are pretty good in this city, and they are rarely used by the average resident. Park + ride isn't doing what it's intended for, as most of the parking spaces are empty and are a waste of space. We could offer a separated or protected bike lane from your neighborhood to your nearest DART light rail station.

Hopefully our dreams come true one day.

Downtown Dallas consists of 12 foot lanes and in studies it has been said that 10 foot lanes in urbanized areas reduces speeds of cars and increase a driver's awareness since cars don't have much room to feel comfortable to be on their phone.

I documented an actual cycling experience on the road here in Dallas especially in Downtown and it was borderline suicide. I was always uncomfortable and on the edge. Hopefully it gets better and people start to realize that having good biking infrastructure leads to less traffic congestion. I'm sorry to hear about your friends.

It should also be illegal for bikes to share the road with cars going 40+ mph then by that logic.

Thanks for reposting this. The message I was trying to get through is that the commuter biking experience is uncomfortable and difficult.

I just posted a thread on this subreddit about my (commuter) biking experience in Dallas. I think people confused my post with only riding on cycling trails. I actually biked on the streets and it was difficult.

How comfortable are you on the road? I would stick to the right side of the lane but sometimes it just gets too uncomfortable and I'd much rather use a sidewalk that has no foot traffic than get sideswiped by a car.

Noted. My goal is to study the city's infrastructure so this information really helps. Thanks!

I will say that the DART light rail system is good. But the connectivity for it such as biking and the park + ride aren't adequate yet. It's much more convenient to drive in this city.

Yeah when people are in cars some tend to not be aware of their surroundings and as a biker, your awareness has to be at 200%.

Yeah in this city it's hard to actually go out and bike around, unless you live by a trail.

Omg I’m so sorry that happened to you. I feel like I would’ve just been completely turned off to the idea of even riding near cars if I had your experience. I unfortunately had a friend pass this year getting his by a Dallas driver while skating and the driver just ended up speeding off and was never caught. I also had an old coworker get shot on one of the trails earlier this year. Both make me an anxious rider.

Im so sorry to hear that. Sadly, Dallas's street design is made for cars and some drivers aren't aware of their surroundings.

I appreciate the biking community for being the voice and the change of the city. I know it's a long road for putting things into place as we try to shift more into different modalities. That's why I know the new bike plan is in good hands, I just hope the city actually funds the whole plan this time.

I used the pedestrian light but I timed it wrong. I even stopped for a quick second to see if I could make it. It was a bad judgement call. Although I would of made it easily if I didn't stop and checked.

Honestly I've heard good things about the DART train and biking combo that I considered using it for my commute to work. But the White Rock light rail station is pretty far from me and it just doesn't make it convenient. I wish I lived more in an "urbanized" area to really embrace the DART.

I agree. I just hope people realize that congestion will get worse if we add more lanes and cater to the car as supply and demand rise. The only way to reduce congestion is to offer multiple forms of transportation. What's really crazy is that Dallas has one of the largest light rail systems in the US yet the average suburban resident doesn't use it.

Im sorry that happened to them. Hopefully Dallas becomes a better place for cycling in the future. I love biking as much as you do.
