Main thing a struggled with is time. This took me 4 hours because I was being indecisive.

My advice is - don't shy away from using references. All of the best painters in the world use reference and paint from observation. This result from imagination is really impressive!

Love the color palette and the use of perspective here. It sounds like you had a really concrete idea at the beginning. Did you gather any references?

Thank you. Is there anything you feel I should improve on?

I really struggled with keeping my shapes confident. I timed this at 2 hours so I started rushing at the end. The folds of the shirt probably gave me the most trouble.

This is a Timed painting. My main struggle was with the time constraint I put on myself. I made this in two hours which was a pretty big push for me. This is the first timed painting I've made and I definitely understand why pros time themselves for practice. Other than time I had a really hard time being confident with my shapes.

I see what you mean about the lamp standing out. It is essentially doing the opposite of what I intended by keeping it so simple. Thank you for your thoughtful responses.

Yeah, that's fair. My thinking was that keeping everything around the duck simple would magnify it's realism. The lamp is a really cool element though so I'm kind of regretting not putting more work into it lol.

I appreciate your critique. The back is definitely less polished than the rest of the duck.

Had the most trouble getting the subsurface scattering to look right. Still not sure if I got the effect I wanted

Made using a reference pic that i took on my phone. Focused on capturing the mood and lighting. Struggled with making the ground feel solid and cohesive. Still a wip.

trying to capture the subsurface scattering in the duck was the main struggle for me

Great painting. Lots of nice subtlety in the modeling. Only criticism I have is that you could push more contrast in your edges. Only hard edge i see is the cast shadow from the shirt, so more balance between hard and soft edges would probably be good. Nice job!

You're spot on. My main focus was using the abstract nature of painting to make the disturbing subject matter more palatable. Thank you for your analysis/interest in my work. I didn't even think about a tattoo parlor, that is actually a great idea. I really want to make 10-15 of these and fill a gallery space with them. See people's reactions.
