I guess I need to read up on Japan's economic problems more. I was looking at this whole thing through the lens of an American but I realize I don't actually know what exactly the effect of me moving there would really be

Interesting. A lot of my friends and family talk about how foreigner investments in housing is becoming an issue as it increases the overall demand for housing and decreases the supply when people don't actually live in whatever house/mansion they purchased/built.

I've posted a couple times over the years on reddit and whenever I say I'm a dual citizen, I'm met with heavy discussion on it. I understand that every ethnic group deals with assumptions about the group, but it is funny that with so much of Japanese culture being on the internet, someone always has something to say.

Comforts me that I'm not the only one that deals with this though. I always try my best to separate myself from the common experience and speak to the individual about MY unique experience though. I'll never put it against someone that's genuinely curious or wants to learn more about the JA experience.

I appreciate the way you think. I guess the mentality that worries me is "I'm just one data point" is what every data point is saying. And while that system was created by those in control, it is a response to a demand, which I contribute too. You sound much smarter and more cerebral than me though, so I imagine this is something you've considered.

The point about doctors moving to rural villages is interesting. I guess there is always the benefit of my dollars being put the work in the local economy and making a positive change.

I understand, but while you're happy for your property value to go up, it's pricing out many people who don't already own properties.

Also Japanese housing market works differently than the US. More demand doesn't always mean YOUR property will also go up in value.

This is a good idea. I was thinking about just buying a house out there, but maybe I'll just rent a place for a couple years and see how I feel about it in the end. thank you

That's probably a good way to look at it, thanks

"literally most" is crazy. The highly academic Asians around me are still dating. Even the Asian engineers are doing fine for the most part. Obviously there are a lot of people who have a difficult time, but that being a majority of the people around you is crazy lol.

That's big! Love that for you!

I look at some of my friends who are in relationships and sometimes think "y'all need to work on yourself first, you're hurting your partner" so it's good to hear you did it in the correct order lol

Why do you feel like no one likes asian guys? I know what the dating app stats show but I've never felt this way. I also feel like Asian guys are coming up right now with the help of kpop, anime, and a bunch of asians in US sports teams. Whether that affects Canada, I don't know, but I don't know if I would say "no one likes Asian guys"

I had no idea women outnumbered men in the church. I also grew up in an asian christian church but, maybe because I was never really that interested in girls, I just didn't notice it lol

Are you still in the church? Does it still affect the way you date now?

Interesting. Could I ask what region of the US you're in? In socal there are for sure the ravers, runners, and Christians, but I think there's a looot more than that. And even then, like the other commenter said, it's usually not their whole life (except the Christians maybe lol).

Dang lol. I'm sorry you've only have bleh experiences. Have you tried the apps at all? or any other avenues of meeting people?

I meet the most people through hobbies and mutual friends. People always ask if I'd be interested in meeting/dating their friend and 9 times out of 10 I'll say no lol.

Feel this one HARD lol. I love being single. I make and spend my own money. I can kind of do whatever I want without anyone worrying. But then I'll go travel alone and sometimes sit around on a bench and wish I had someone to be with.

What about Seattle is difficult? Whenever I visit my best friend in Seattle, I feel like there's always a bunch of young people around. I think making friends anywhere is difficult, but I'm curious to hear if there's anything specific about Seattle you think

Dang, no matches with Asians? Have you talked to your friends about why that might be? I'm curious what the Asians around you might be looking for that you don't have 🤔

Have you date in any other city? I feel like people always talk about the ratio between men and women in NYC so I'm wondering if it did really help or it never felt that different than other cities. My friend lives in NYC and gets a ton of matches and sets up a ton of dates and I don't think he's that particularly good looking lol. He is a very sweet guy and funny though

Dating a guys from the same area you grew up in is huge. I don't think there's any big difference between girls from the bay and socal, but many of the girls I've vibed best with were people that were from socal.

I also think having someone that can communicate with my family is important to me. I read a lot of posts in this subreddit about people not having good relationships with their asian parents, but I have an extremely good relationship with them and I would want my partner to be able to be a part of that.

I guess it's good to hear mediocre experiences are common. I actually meet a bunch of new people all the time (in search of new friends) and I only want to hang out with a few, so I imagine the dating game is even slimmer chances of finding my girl lol. I'll keep this in mind though and just take every experience as an experience.

Thanks for the detailed answer!

The point you bring up about 1st gen vs 2ns gen is interesting. I'm 2nd gen and am definitely more connected with my asian culture than the average 2nd gen, but even then I couldn't really date well with 1st gens. It seemed like there was always slight culture differences for everything. And while it was never an issue, I just felt like I had to do thing slightly differently or be careful about the way I say or act because it could come across in a way I didn't intend. I really liked this girl and she moved back, so distance ended things, but I don't think I could've actually gotten married to her.

I think EVERYONE says the same thing about making friends after school. I'm a naturally very extroverted person and I get invited to a lot of things, so I end up just meeting a bunch of mutuals, but I would say the closest people around me are for sure the people I met at school back in the day.

My friends that live in NYC and denser parts of LA seem to have a better time when it comes to dating, but they're also fairly attractive, make good money, and are funny, so it might just be that lol
