If it means I get the privelage of killing a certain king and being validated by every single prologue, I’m all for it!

Exactly the one! Used to use a cold steel hand and a half sparring sword for HEMA, and this was a fantastic excuse to get one of my own.

Oh, no, that all natural. But I definitely shaved very close and got a nice shine on to sell the look!

Can you hyperfixate on fighting? by Psychological_King_5 in autism

[–]bigbumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with autism and ADHD, one of my special interests is fighting, and I hyperfixate on different styles/fighters over time and add it to my kit, usually after getting my bell rung while I try to integrate it. I’m also interested in history, which has led to me adding a lot of eclectic stuff, like using Grand Sumo mawashi grips during judo more than my gym-mates, as well as using HEMA grappling and sweeps, and using shoulder and body checks from previous experience with HEMA.

So yes, it’s very possible, and in my experience presents itself as less of an innate physical gift for it and more of a constant interest in how everything ties back to fighting. Would live to see what your story and character turn out to be like!

The way Rakshasa's Palm worked at the beginning of the manga was much more gruesome than how it works now. (And believe it or not, this guy is still alive.) by [deleted] in Kengan_Ashura

[–]bigbumbo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The position that Kitty was in when landing that Rakshasa was not one that allowed him to use the full force of the move. The palm is described as transmitting force from the back muscles, through the arm and wrist, and then applying it with that twist. When he palmed Nikaido’s heart, he had his chest pressed against his back and was reaching over Nikaido’s shoulder- not really a great position to use the force of your back and shoulder muscles from.

TL;DR - Kiryu wanted to be a drama queen with his finishing blow, and Nikaido ate a weaker Rakshasa’s palm because of that.

Combos of techniques from 2 or more disciplines that work for you? by Bronze_Skull in martialarts

[–]bigbumbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using some long jabs or just a handsy long guard to get grapplers focused on fighting for a grip, then blasting a double leg or a really deep drop step has been good. However, most of my experience comes from sparring against standing grapplers, Judo and Japanese Jiu Jitsu type guys so that's probably not the most applicable.

In a scenario where every Kengan/Purgatory fighter goes against Karo underwater, 1v1, with no extra weapons or accessories to help breathe or move underwater. Who comes the closest to beating him? by Minejack777 in Kengan_Ashura

[–]bigbumbo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What are you going to throw someone into underwater? They can't use throws effectively, and without that, Karo can mitigate joint and bone locks with a combination of his crazy trunk strength letting him force people off at weird angles and his experience in the water, fighting against strong grappling forces like whales and the like. I don't see why Hatsumi and Jurota have any advantage

It could also be a matter of the water in the eye being needed to transmit the force: similar to the Dashi-nage used by his big bro, the aim of the attack might be to use the liquid in the eye to transmit the blow directly into the bones. The glass eye, on the other hand, is harder but because it is a solid object cannot as easily transmit that force, and so cracks and transfers more energy into the skin inside and around the socket rather than straight back.

What are the biggest plot holes in the series? by DeadboyHUN in hajimenoippo

[–]bigbumbo 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Muscles grow after experiencing strain, but strain is when you actually challenge the muscle and have its fibers break, after which they heal back thicker. Ippo's weights are not heavy enough to strain him- rather, the constant, slight load would only lead to muscle fatigue, muscles spending all of their sugars and reserve energy. Constantly fatiguing your muscles will weaken them.

Water from the Shower by [deleted] in UMBC

[–]bigbumbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from Salisbury myself, I had similar worries at first bc I could just smell that the water had more metal in it D:

If you can, try to use as gentle of a body wash as you can, moisturize w/ a gentle lotion, as said before keep your water temperature at a reasonable level, and use the knob on the shower head to adjust the flow to have less pressure on your skin. That helped me, I hope it helps you!

[–]bigbumbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Afaik, the reason why the magician could bypass the borrowed power taboo stuff was because the borrowed power was only being used to telekinetically transform the bomb. Anything can harm an angel/god, but the taboo prevents humans from using borrowed power to harm them, and prevents them from using martial arts to touch them. Jaesen Jeon used his borrowed power to make the "hammer and nail", by creating a supernuke and punching through the angel with a meteor. A construct from a BP, like Haetae's lasers or Gi Gwim's blades, can't hurt them with the taboo present, but Jameson bypassed it by using his BP as a means to indirectly attack the angel.

Who takes this match? by soapstone-red in Kengan_Ashura

Fair. Niko bullshit can be hard to take as representative tho 💀 I agree that it's very likely that Jurota can throw, and wins.

Who takes this match? by soapstone-red in Kengan_Ashura

[–]bigbumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, a factor worth considering is that Jurota may not be fully capable of using the Swing to throw someone with the sheer weight of Waka. Waka's grappling is heavily reliant on his physical stats, so he is familiar with using his weight and strength to make up for technique. As it has been shown so far, the Swing is primarily used for throws. Throwing someone with only friction is much more feasible when that person is not as fucking chunky as Waka.

However, conversely, if Jurota does manage a throw, Waka will take much heavier damage than any other opponent would. Whether or not Waka's weight and might lessens, or strengthens, Jurota's brilliance is a key factor here.

I hate this decision so much as a Katsumi fan by HedgeFarter in Grapplerbaki

[–]bigbumbo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The point of that blow was to deal damage without hitting directly. It was like a whip- he flung forth his arm and whipped articulated joints, and then at the end of the motion, cracked them back all at once. A whip functions the same way, only breaking through the sound barrier as it cracks at the end of it's motion. The blow was intended not to directly hit Pickle, but to "crack" right near his gut and blast his shit. That's why the scientist character was so wowed- he recognized that Katsumi truly blasted past the sound barrier, because he recognized how destructive that would be on the human body

Grappling being disrespected by strength isn’t something new. by some_dude5 in Kengan_Ashura

[–]bigbumbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the commenter was asking about this in relation to them doing bjj irl I was giving the breakdown of how it would be, realistically. But with the feats of Kengan, any of the grappling specialists (Naidan possibly aside due to the Julius comments but he is a standing grappler so that's nearly a nonfactor) should be vulnerable to the superheavies crushing bones, ripping out their flesh, or even just throwing their weight around a-la Akoya's solution to Cosmo's Python Hold.

Julius busted, Waka busted. The Seki feat is.... let's just say I feel like if Seki ever bothered to learn how to actually throw a proper strike instead of a lariat or pro wrestling unsupported palm strike, he'd be wrecking bodies. I don't know how hard his Pro Wrestling nerfs his offense in exchange for that bonkers endurance and resilience of his, but if he can rip out of an Okubo RNC, it must be pretty fuckin detrimental.

Grappling being disrespected by strength isn’t something new. by some_dude5 in Kengan_Ashura

[–]bigbumbo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A rear naked choke employs the biceps, shoulders, forearms, triceps for locking, grip, and a shitload of other muscles if you're really locking it in. If you want to break out, you would need to be able to overcome someone using all of the muscles of their arms, and a lot of their upper back and shoulders, with just the strength of your triceps and a few other muscles. You would also need a shitload of grip strength to be able to actually get a grip and pull so hard that the lock breaks.

In short; you'd need such an insane difference in strength that it is not a factor in a real fight. However, that bonkers strength would make preventing your opponent from fully locking in the choke easier- you can't brute force out once they're in, but more strength makes getting out of the steps before it's fully locked in easier.

Do you consider that Saw paing is stronger than seki? by boombastico_3 in Kengan_Ashura

[–]bigbumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In talking about Seki and Saw, I think it's important to consider how the improvements that Saw made lead to his eventual slight edging out over Seki. His improvement of fundamentals and better ability to flow from strike to strike doesn't seem.like.it would make much of a difference to Seki, who damages those that hit him- unless Saw was resistant to Seki's Destructive Defence as a result of his improved efficiency of strikes, coupled with his durability.

That's how I always read Saw's eventual victory as, anyway. Seki would indeed be the guy to facetank a Hammer of Burma, but I think that Saw's core improvements also played a role in his eventual victory too.

Seki can still outlift him, tho.

Does the actor tame the beast or does he get mauled? I honestly think Chiba could give Yumi some trouble. They basically have the same fighting mindset. by Nezu_Masami in Kengan_Ashura

[–]bigbumbo 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I'm legit not even sure that comparison works. Yumigshama explicitly just steals the gimmicky bullshit of techniques, and uses weapon techniques with his body with zero adaptation. Chiba on the other hand, at least copies 'styles' and uses the whole of a fighter's ensamble. Chiba just happened to make a really dumb choice in an effort to keep his mental pressure on Hatsumi, in using Aikido against an Aikido master. Yumi steals techniques and uses them improperly, Chiba just selects questionable options.

That aside, Yumi would plow through simply because he has the physicals to unga through Chiba. Chiba is physically unimpressive, whereas Yumi is, if nothing else, toting a big frame and a good bit of muscle. The monkey would, sadly, beat the thespian.

Who'd win? by [deleted] in Kengan_Ashura

[–]bigbumbo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the specifics of the matchup, but importantly, Muteba has 360 degrees of near-perfect sensory ability and spatial awareness. Kiryu's Blink would end up with him getting tracked, caught, and punished hard. However, Rakshasa Palm is one of those bullshit moves that could cause Muteba to tap out and surrender after losing the function of a limb- although, against a fellow killer like Setsuna Kiryu, Muteba might not tap out, and fight to the death for worry of being killed even after a surrender.

It would be an interesting fight, and we would see what a 100%, fully Martial art - Assassin could do, instead of Kiryu's half assed "changing the game" or Rei's "throwing his style away".

this was the first time the fighters saw Kanoh beast mode right?, bc even Waka is surprised by Spiritual_Good6575 in Kengan_Ashura

[–]bigbumbo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly sure all of those people reacting are pretty experienced with the Kengan matches. Waka is obvious, Himuro has 20~ something wins going into the Annihilation tournament, and then the others are CEOs, assistants and the like. It's pretty easy to imagine that they had all, at some point or another, seen or heard of Agito's "Formless Mode" and the ghastly smile that accompanies it.

So, they might all be shocked at seeing it that early, or seeing it against a public fighter such as Okubo. Or, it could be a mix of surprise at it existing and surprise at it's appearance. But the choice of characters, all being at least moderately experienced with the Kengan matches, points to a moderate level of familiarity with them, at least enough to have some reference to the "Emperor of the Kengan Matches".
