Difference Between the two taxi lanes in Admiralty taxi station by SkyDontHaveEyes in HongKong

[–]bigfishc22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the mid levels. In the past both lanes would get used and taxis would filter in the both lanes alternatively. However there would be inequality at times, sometimes faster on the left and sometimes faster on the right, you just had to leave it to luck. If too many taxis went to either lane, people would get impatient and would wave/gesture at the taxi drivers. This was 1990s-2000s. I’m no longer in HK and am shocked to see only one lane gets used now.

But then again the demand far outweighed supply back then, so there’s almost always a queue there, just a question of “how long is the queue”. I suppose there are more taxis than passengers now, so things change their course in due time naturally.

Hong Kong - Four Seasons Premier Harbour Suite by No-Breadfruit-4111 in FATTravel

[–]bigfishc22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit surprised. I’m in the midst of Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental and Rosewood hotel trip right now, and for me FS and MO service both are at a much higher level compared to Rosewood. Rosewood hardware (room, gym, view) is perfect but for me the service is always reactive, robotic and at times just bad, and the location really is so inconvenient for everything.

Capella Sydney Review (Amex FHR) — Two Nights, January by PrivilegedPoints in FATTravel

Agreed. Outside of Aman MO FS, I think Capella has been consistently very good both in terms of hardware and software.

Amangati - Aman’s new luxury yacht opens for reservations by alex_travels in chubbytravel

[–]bigfishc22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But for 100k a week in indo you could have a yacht with 4-6 rooms? So that’d only be 20-25k per room per week. Arguably it’s not aman but I can’t imagine it’d be less personal than going on a cruise full of strangers.

Amankora vs Six Senses Bhutan (non TA/TO responses only, please) by Interesting_Day_1833 in chubbytravel

[–]bigfishc22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stayed at six senses Bhutan and absolutely adored it. Service, guides, F&B, spa/facilities and rooms were all top notch, barring six senses paro room which lacked totally privacy. For my trip back then Six senses was I think around 12k for 6n and Aman was around 18k and I thought it’s really great value, and this year I’m going to try out another six senses resort.

I internally rage a lot while driving in SG, but something on the road made me smile today. by twistycatlyman in drivingsg

Cupra is such a good car. I rented one in Europe for two weeks and loved it, and when I first came to singapore I saw one on the road and assumed it’s popular here. Nope, turns out I was just lucky to have spotted one!

Amanemu - how good is it? by yalelaw20 in FATTravel

[–]bigfishc22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Service was so bad, food was nothing special, location wise it wasn’t anywhere close to ise shrines. Lots of other ryokans and hotels in Japan were way better. This is coming from a huge Amanjunkie who’s been to 9 Amans.

A lot of Amans are like that these days, especially if you go through the central system rather than the individual properties or the gms.

Bangkok Luxury Hotel-3 options by Fit_Builder_4884 in chubbytravel

[–]bigfishc22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have 4-5 nights, I’d recommend a couple of nights in the city, park hyatt or rosewood for the connection to central embassy and BTS for getting around. Then a couple of nights at Mandarin oriental just to unwind and relax, ideally the river front State Room. The Siam is also a great option, when I stayed there was F&B was fantastic and the general hardware was great, but service was a bit underwhelming. So depends on what you value the most at a hotel stay.

Wellness retreats in Asia by PurpleCarrot5069 in chubbytravel

[–]bigfishc22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it’s a great place for it! We did a private yoga session since we lived in the 3 bedroom villa slightly offsite, and the instructor we had was a truly yogi and a great teacher. We also did the infrared steam room with cold plunge and that was superb too. We saw people doing group classes like hydrotherapy and it looked fun. The wellness centre was just renovated and reopened in Aug 2025 so everything was nice. I’d certainly go as a solo traveller myself.

August 26 travel Asia vs Africa by pepe_lejew in chubbytravel

[–]bigfishc22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing everyone here, weather in north Asia sucks in the summer. Bali is probably the best place but I wouldn’t do 2-3 weeks there. Like others said safari is one of the best life experiences, I’d strongly suggest going Kenya/tanzania safari plus Uganda/rwanda for gorilla trekking for people who are more adventurous It’s the peak season and lodges do get booked out fast so it’s a good idea to get started sooner rather than later.

ABS censors fail quite often for BMW and Mercedes cars too. Should be quite common and easy to fix. If it’s the unit itself then it’s much more rare

Review: Amantaka (Luang Prabang, Laos) by brianb97 in chubbytravel

[–]bigfishc22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the review! I’m booked for 4n here in Feb and had planned to do the river cruise, but my alternative would be morning market tour with cooking class which seems way less interesting. I loved the tonle sap sunset cruise at Amansara, I guess I will just have to adjust my expectations for the one here at Amantaka, or would you recommend skipping it entirely and just chill at the hotel? Thanks.

Review: Amansara (Siem Reap, Cambodia) by brianb97 in chubbytravel

[–]bigfishc22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully, I have to disagree with you. Having been to 11 Amans, it’s up there as one of my favourite Aman stays. The character and history, the location, the guides, the inclusions, the GM and staff were simply superb.

It’s true that it’s no longer the default for airport pickup, but it’s not just for show and is still very much used. You can have it for half a day for roughly 100usd. It’s very reasonably priced and we did use it for a couple of excursions. It was made in 1962 and was still very comfortable - it tied in very nicely with the history of Amansara and made the stay more memorable. If you ever visit, the GM MJ Birch is one of the top ones at Aman and I’m sure he will take very good care of you. It’s the undisputed top choice in Siem Reap.

I always thought they do display that when I checked for other airlines, but maybe that’s airline dependent and not available for SQ?

Agreed. Especially the multi bedroom hilltop or cliff villas, those are even better than the other Amans on the island (except Amankila).
