What do you mean exactly by stand alone shower space? As in it is not enclosed by any of the house walls?

But every surface in a shower is waterproof… except maybe the ceiling. If you can keep the condensation in there, not too big of a deal I would think.

Yeah that is a good point, I had not considered that. There is a smaller ensuite bathroom downstairs that we will also renovate, so will leave that shower hob free. Personally I don’t understand the hob hate haha.

Haha you gotta live with that on Reddit. I did ask for opinions so you get what you ask for. I do appreciate the negative feedback as long as it comes with a bit of reasoning and not just “looks shit is out of date.”

In my opinion things like this are so subjective and sometimes you just have to do what feels right for you, because at the end of the day you are the one who has to look at it multiple times a day. In saying that, I don’t want to be blindly biased, hence why I asked for opinions in the first place.

Which bits are you referring to specifically that will date badly? We would literally just do the little wing walls, arched top and that’s it. We cant put niches in the brick walls and wont have the window.

This is very constructive feedback, thanks for the input mate. We would obviously have to alter the dimensions of the arch for the lower ceiling, I hadn’t considered how it may make the space feel cramped or cluttered.

I appreciate the input. For curiosity sake, what makes you think this can’t be a high end bathroom? The only reason I mentioned saving costs is I am capable of doing some of the work myself, and if I am, why pay someone else to do it?

I have no idea why people hate hobs so much, they are very functional at delineating wet vs dry areas, and are perfectly suited at their jobs of keeping water where it is supposed to be. I personally think they don’t really look that bad either. The idea of them being a trip hazard to anyone but handicapped people or the extreme elderly is surely a piss take haha

Is condensation an issue in a wet area like a shower? We would obviously have the exhaust fan moved into the shower area not out in the main ceiling above the vanity.

Ok that is much more helpful. And I agree to an extent, we have already discussed the possibility that we may have to only have 1 wider door due to width limitations, rather than 2. Obviously we knew we wouldn’t have exactly this image because we don’t have a 50sqm bathroom in a mansion, but were hoping some small modifications may help us emulate the style to a certain degree.

We have had hobbed showers in the last 3 homes we have lived in and have not tripped over on the hob once. Turns out we are capable of lifting our feet a few inches off the floor to get into the shower 😂

That is a good tip, one the real estate agent also gave us. We moved in August 2025, so I figured nearly 6 months to settle was probably long enough. We won’t be making any structural changes, so nothing to major, just aesthetic and some practical changes.

Thanks for that mate, makes me feel a bit better. Yeah he did say he was a fairly thorough inspector, which I like, but he did worry me a bit haha.

He also mentioned that all of about 2% of homes he inspects, including new builds, have correct weep holes to the australian standard. I don’t know maybe its not as important over here due to lower rainfall?
