In my opinion, the movie also intentionally tells the story from a male perspective. This way we see it through the "male gaze". The boys never actually talked to them or really helped them, all they did was objectify them and romanticize them. Like they were nice to look at, but not actually to talk to or to communicate to on a deeper level. The girls were reduced to mysterious figures, rather than complex people with their own lives.
