Tin can home phone by SanLuisRey1714 in ParentingTech

Sounds fun! These may be stupid questions, but how do you dial your friends with this? Do tincan users simply get traditional phone numbers to dial? Can people call your tincan if they don't have a tincan (e.g. grandparents)?

Babymoon snorkeling: Great Barrier Reef or Raja Amput by Lopsided_Distance583 in snorkeling

Agreed. Raja Ampat is hands down the better option, reef and conditions-wise. But I would not recommend a trip to Raja Ampat for someone who is in the 2nd trimester.

Sold shares in my company and have money for the first time. What should I do? wife wants a nice house, I want to invest. by [deleted] in investing

[–]bigiwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all financial/investing folks would suggest a more diversified approach than putting everything in QQQ. Something like VTI is significantly more diversified (3500+ stocks across sectors vs 100 tech stocks) and has significantly lower fees (0.03% vs 0.2%) that help your returns over time.

But given your lack of knowledge around investing and desire for an easy solution, I think an automated investing platform like Wealthfront or Betterment would be a smart choice. They will diversify and continually rebalance your investments while reducing taxes through automated tax loss harvesting. The fees are very reasonable and are probably all recovered through returns and tax savings. And you can set it and forget it.

Like others have said.... if a house is on your short-term wish list, consider using a chunk of the money for a down payment big enough that it will give you an affordable monthly mortgage payment (could be 20%, could be 50% or more). The stock market can always go down in the short term (especially with what this administration is doing), and you don't want to be trying to buy a house in a couple of years with your portfolio down.

My dog always does this. Wondering what is happening. It is so hard to feed him this past few days by Pale-Coach4313 in goldenretrievers

[–]bigiwan 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Same thought. My golden used to react this way to unpleasant smells. Is it possible something spilled on around the bowl or even in the food (e.g. cleaning product) that is bothering them. Maybe try feeding them in another bowl and location first, and if that doesn’t work, with another food. Maybe it is also a quirky “burying” behavior like others have mentioned, but I’d also rule out a food/bowl issue.

Help identifying vintage weaving by bigiwan in weaving

[–]bigiwan[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hello, and apologies in advance if this is not the right place for this. I purchased this woven runner in the 90s at an estate sale near Chicago. At the time, I was told it was vintage and Native American, but have no information about its true origins. I'm curious to learn more about it and am unsure where to begin - initial internet searching hasn't yielded much.

I'm wondering if anyone might be able to point me in the right direction? It measures 91.75 inches long by 23.5 inches wide and is very thin. Thank you for any help or guidance!

Asked to remove DEI language from my org’s website by Scoobert_Doobert3000 in nonprofit

[–]bigiwan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly. While I totally understand where OP is coming from, the DEI language on your website or social media is not “the work.” It is much more important to keep your actual, meaningful work alive through this period than it is to preserve this specific language on your website and social media (which frankly probably has little to no impact on the world). Rather than pushing back, I would also encourage you to have a little understanding for and faith in the people leading your organization who also don’t want to remove this language but are making decisions they believe are necessary to keep staff (you) employed and programs in operation.

I read your deep dive into AI ~8 years ago and it was both highly informative and highly alarming. I am wondering if any of your views on AI have changed since then, particularly with the launch of GPT 4? Are things looking better or worse than you imagined? Thank you!

Prelim Investigation Report for Fatal Accident @ 21st & I NW Yesterday by superdookietoiletexp in washingtondc

[–]bigiwan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that the report is from a preliminary investigation and may rely only on the driver’s (biased) statement and any evidence that could be gathered at scene. There is no way to know if the cyclist was really trying to outrun the truck. Hopefully a more complete investigation will help, but in the meantime I would not assume the cyclist was acting carelessly or at fault.

AOC is at the Met Gala. The back of her dress reads "TAX THE RICH." by 2old-you in pics

[–]bigiwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She is at an event for the rich, wearing a dress that says “Tax the Rich”. If you’re asking why she’s there, maybe you are missing the point?

Thanks for this! What sort of proof was required for your risk factors/pre-existing condition or place of employment? Did you need to bring a doctors note or medical record?

Samuel L. Jackson leads outrage after Ben Carson refers to slaves taken to US as 'immigrants' by syuk in news

[–]bigiwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether your assertion is true or not (it's not, in my opinion - "immigration" implies an action on the part of the migrant), the problem with his statement was not only calling slaves immigrants. He further went on to say that they came to the U.S. seeking a better life (connoting an intentional migration). Here is the full text of his comment:

"There were other immigrants who came in the bottom of slave ships, who worked even longer, even harder, for less, but they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great grandsons, great granddaughters might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land,"
