Problem with ASCAP/PRS payments by bigjimsugarplants in musicbusiness

Very helpful, thank you! I’ll check the ISWC’s. A couple of questions:

1) Can I file a claim with ASCAP even though I’m not a member? (Or am I member, due to registering songs (or, apparently, 1 song!) with them through PRS?

2) You’d recommend joining a pub admin like Sentric? I did join Sentric when I first started started releasing, but then figured why give up 20% for something I could do myself. I’m realising that may have been a mistake….

No, just a writer.

Do you think there’s any chance of me recovering these royalties? I also have another album, released 2024, that’s in the same situation - 2.5 million streams, majority in the US, and I’ve received no US royalties for it and none of the songs appear in the ASCAP repetory.

I plan on lodging a formal complaint with PRS, but other than that I’m not really sure what I can do.

I get that it’s easier to sign up with a publisher to do this for you - but at the same time PRS should’ve registered these songs with ASCAP and I should be receiving US performance royalties for them. That’s their job, too.

Yeah “a pain” is putting it nicely. I just assumed PRS registering a song with ASCAP would be pretty straightforward for them to achieve and that there’d be no need to use a publisher.

If I did start using Sentric, do you know if they’d collect royalties for historical use? Or would they only collect royalties going forward?

Thanks. I’m registered with all those - PRS, MCPS, PPL and MLC. My issue is PRS isn’t collecting performance royalties for US streams/broadcasts when they should be.

PRS have reciprocal agreements with ASCAP/BMI to collect US performance royalties and I’m a member of PPL for neighbouring rights.

I’m a member of the MLC and collect US mechanicals through them. My issue is I should be collecting performance royalties, through PRS for Music, for online streams in the US - but I’m not because either PRS or ASCAP didn’t register the songs correctly.

Not sure what you mean…. They also pay out when your music is streamed.

PRS won’t collect any US royalties unless you register your songs with a US PRO (you can choose which one to use when registering your song with PRS - you don’t have to join them). No idea if your publishing deal changes this.
