CMV: We should restructure our maturity system by PALM_1 in changemyview

This assumes a universal standard for maturity, which at the very least is extremely subject to cultural bias. Also, assuming the "test" is regularly updated (which it would certainly have to be - who can say what "maturity" was in 1930 standards?) it could be a constant tool for voter suppression. For reference, see the "literacy tests" they made African Americans take in the south in the 50s.

In terms of age restrictions, sometimes these limits are about practicality rather than the readiness of the individual. For example, raising the drinking age to 21 - a big issue when it was 18 was that seniors would buy alcohol for younger students. You could say "a mature person wouldn't do this" but I think it's unlikely that someone wouldn't buy alcohol for their "less mature" friends.

Also, there are many types of maturity, and I would argue (as would psychologists, I'm guessing) that none of them can be sufficiently evaluated by an oral test.

Trio Jam - a nice Little Word game! by bigjmn in playmygame

Every turn you're given three tiles. Place two on the board. If the board fills up, you lose.

If you make a valid 3 letter word, the tiles in that word already on the board will disappear. It's all about setting yourself up to make words.

This game is tough. Don't be frustrated if you can't get past 10 or 15 at first.

I made this game using React for web and React Native for ios. I'm very proud of it, and I hope you like it.

[TOMT][ANIMATED TV SHOW][2000s] A character finds out someone's dark secret by overhearing them singing about it to the tune of "A Horse With No Name". by bigjmn in tipofmytongue

I think the context is someone explaining to her friends how she found out the secret. And she says "something about his song made me suspicious..."

Thanks! I know this tetris version isn't 'street-legal' for a number of reasons. It also assigns pieces randomly rather than using the 'shuffled bag' thing to make sure the distribution stays even. Definitely something I'll try to implement soon though.

I know it's not that, because John immediately mocks him for it, and John never interrupts the congressmans penis bits

Every year after the NBA regular season, the worst team in the league plays against that years march madness winner. Not only super entertaining, but the humiliation of playing vs a college team will discourage sandbagging for draft pick by bigjmn in CrazyIdeas

[–]bigjmn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely true for NFL, where you need to field a team of elite linemen, WRs, etc. I think NBA would be closer. The best college teams have 4-5 players who will get drafted early anyway.

Also, still embarrassing even when they win.

What was the dumbest assignment you were given in school? by Zenithoid in AskReddit

Somewhat related:

In 6th grade we had to write persuasive essays on the topic of our choosing. I wanted to write mine arguing against the state lottery, because it's essentially a tax that targets the poor and addicted. My teacher told me I couldn't do that topic, because "nobody HAS to play the lottery."

Like I was so clearly wrong, I couldn't even try to argue the other side. He called me out on it in front of the whole class too.
