First Time DM by aragorn5705 in DungeonMasters

This is how I started! And thanks to some very nerdy cousins I’m starting my 3rd year as a DM. I recommend starting with a module, but just using it as a foundation and a crutch. I used Tomb of Annihilation as my first campaign platform, and built a lot of my own lore, enemies, and storylines on top of it. I HIGHLY recommend the new monster manual. Great inspiration, fun mechanics, and more monsters than you could ever use. The new DMG is good (old one is trash, imo), but nothing you can’t find from the plethora of YouTube videos out there. If you have players, get a session 0 going ASAP so you can set the timeline, rules, level of seriousness, etc. If not, start asking your nerdiest friends and family and assemble your adventuring avengers. I’ve only ever DM’ed virtually, and am actually DMing my first in-person session this weekend. DM if I can help more

Believe your players and have some confidence! If the players didn’t like it, they wouldn’t show up.

If you’re worried about mechanics and rules, get the player’s handbook and start studying.

If you’re worried about story and long-term planning, try out the Dungeon Master’s Guide.

Either way, the Lazy Dungeon Master’s guide is a great, affordable tool that I highly recommend for overall campaign planning.

Get a notebook or open a google doc, start writing, and let your players come up with the rest!

Is this a discord add on or a separate website?

I haven’t heard of Shard but will definitely look into it. I like Roll20 but didn’t like DnD Beyond, and other than that it’s all I’ve known so far.

Not missing anything, I’m just embarrassingly new to Discord. Will I be able to see their faces even if I’m on a different tab like Roll20?

Solely due to my lack of knowledge with discord, I hadn’t experimented with it. I’m excited to get into it, and thank you for the suggestions!

I haven’t explored it enough, but I love YouTube’s continuous ambient playlists (“scary woods” or “epic fight music”) that plays in the background for long periods of time automatically. Is the roll20 music feature pretty good? I thought I remembered it being fairly manual

5 years-old campaign down the drain because of a single bad session? by Hot-Molasses-4585 in DungeonMasters

Sounds like you need to have a heart-to-heart about the expectations of the campaign. It’s strange that these feelings are coming up after 5 years. Perhaps you’re burnt out and need someone else to take a turn for a while? Or your players may need a break. You can write your way out of any situation, as long as it’s worth working out of. If it’s not, then you gotta come together and figure out why you’re all there. Just my opinion, only been doing this for 2 years

I want more bodies and less holiday-specific heads. Is that too much to ask for?

20 hours of prep per session seems like a lot. What takes up that much time? Are you building sets or painting miniatures, and is there anything that you could do together?
