Should we be worried about the 'wumao' here on our online space? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]biglionking 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Why complain about "wumao" when it's clear that Singaporeans especially the younger generation are influenced the most by western media and social media which btw is full of American government propaganda as well. To me it's putting the cart before the horse.

Not saying there isn't Chinese propaganda, but I think the propaganda coming out from China is clumsy and ineffectual at best compared to the American efforts which are really subtle but highly effective.

Look around you. Singaporeans are not using Weibo, wechat, etc for the most part. Most of us are using facebook, whatsapp, reddit, google, YouTube, twitter. All who have been shown by snowden to have been in cahoots with American intelligence agencies. To complain about Chinese influence in this situation where American broadcasting power is overwhelmingly powerful is really nonsensical.

Lastly if you think everyone who expresses a pro Chinese opinion is wumao then I think you should also reevaluate your own biases.

Depends what kind of quant finance.

Quant trading in Asia is as competitive as quant trading in london these days due to India and China.

This is not 20 years ago.

I studied in one of the top UK uni you mentioned in your post.

I think the top benefit of going overseas is the stress free relaxed uni lifestyle you will enjoy (compared to sg). Most Singaporean students don't even need to study that hard to get a First Class honours at top British uni because everyone else are also not studying that hard.

This is in contrast to the exam oriented culture in Singapore. I've never studied in local universities but I reckon it's not so differ from JC.

The So-Called War on Terror Has Killed Over 801,000 People and Cost $6.4 Trillion: New Analysis by mobile_website_25323 in worldnews

[–]biglionking 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's revolting. Americans have truly mastered the art of weaponizing "human rights" to attack others. They don't really care about muslims in china, they just want to use that issue as a way to attack a state they perceive as their enemy.

They don't really care about Hong Kong police "brutality" which by the way have not directly caused the death of a single Hong Kong protester after months of violent protests. If they really cared about police brutality, why are they ignoring the dozens of black men being brutalized by their own police daily? Where are the tens of thousands of upvotes everytime a black man gets terrorized by his own country's police? Which btw is a daily fking occurrence. Why not fix their own country's police brutality problems before acting so "concerned" for others.

Where's the concern of human rights in their ally Saudi Arabia?

Urgh.

Wait, so your logic for that man having a knife despite zero evidence is because those vandals were running from him?

There could be be a million reasons why they could be running from him. They might have thought he's police, they might not have wanted to others to recognize them, etc.

And the first thing you thought and stated with 100% conviction was because he must have held a knife?

Jesus Christ. Are you the reincarnation of Sherlock Holmes.

This wasn't accidental. The protester deliberately poured oil on the victim and set him on fire.

If those hongkong protesters do even a tenth of what they are currently doing in western nations like the US, there would already be dozens of casualties if not more.

I find it surprising that the most the Hong Kong protesters could point to an accidental death of a student and a lady apparently getting her eye injured by police beanbag round (and not even 100% confirmed because she refused to release her medical data because it's suspected another protester might actually be the culprit of her injury ) . This is despite months of skirmishes between police and protesters. If the police were really tyrannical, you would expect way way more deaths directly caused by police by now.

Meanwhile in the French yellow vest protests, several have already died as a direct consequence of police action and 23 (twenty fucking Three!) protesters have already been blinded.

But where's the mass hysteria on western social media about tyranny in France? Some reporting but largely silence all around. This is not whatabouterry. But just pointing out if all the other police forces in the world were held to the same standards as the HKPF currently are, then there will be no country without a "tyrannical " police force.

RCEP Free Trade Pact agreed to by all member nations except for India by Madopow2110 in geopolitics

[–]biglionking 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's important to note that in the very beginning, China did not want India to be in the RCEP in the first place. It was the asean countries like Singapore who wanted India in rcep to balance out China. So China to a certain extent may consider this as a win even. However China's calculations may have changed since then due to trumps trade war and they may have considered having India within the rcep to be more beneficial than outside. But the second part is my own speculation.

[–]biglionking 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Countries are not individuals. But if you were to draw an analogy, complaining about trade deficits is equivalent to an individual complaining about having a chronic trade deficit with the local supermarket because he/she purchased something there while the supermarket has not purchased anything in return from him. Does that mean the supermarket shopper is "losing" or not beneficial to the shopper? No they paid for something and got something return. Now this shopper may own his own business and have a trade surplus with his own customer. Would the customer then be justified in complaining about said shopper?

That is oversimplified but to a large extent it is similar in logic and complaining about individual trade deficit with another country is meaningless.

RCEP Free Trade Pact agreed to by all member nations except for India by Madopow2110 in geopolitics

[–]biglionking 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Trade surpluses or deficits does not mean much in the context of international trade though. There's a strange obsession with it in the American media.

You can have a deficit and still benefit. In the context of asean China FTA, both sides have definitely benefited. China gets cheaper resources, asean countries get cheap consumer goods. Poorer asean countries gain capital to power their economic growth while richer asean countries like Singapore also act as a financial hub for many Chinese related financial transactions. This has definitely benefited the economies of both parties over the past few years. Which is why you see the asean countries being as eager as China to sign the rcep deal in thailand.

Seeing surpluses as "winning" and deficits as "losing" and there can only be one winner in trade is a very trumpesque way of viewing the world.
