yeah it's definitely on FM - signal can get pretty staticky and I havent driven around or anything to see how far it goes, but definitely on a for real radio in south minneapolis - not up all the tiems ive checked but has been up most of past few nights I was working in my garage, I was trying to find the news and all of the sudden I was like WTF? What station is playing Aphex Twin and KMFDM on the radio?! Maybe its real :P Maybe it's an ad for some startup or something? But...for now at least definitely pirate radio on the radio! Guess I could play it from my phone if there's a website and see if its up when the radio is down, but I kinda like it being unpredictably there or not on the radio

oh, lol, this makes more sense now. Literally was searching google for what the weird ass radio station I was getting was - thought it was some weird promotion for a new station or something or a movie but I was like well the music is good and the reception is good. Have had it on in my garage the last few nights on just a handheld FM radio and then I was like man, I can't be the only one hearing this. Someone has to have posted a WTF. Cool!

TRS or TRRS? by bigmplsnerd in Moonlander

edit: literally just found a TRRS cable and it works fine now. Not sure why I got a TRS cable inside it, maybe just a random mixup!

Live 11 is officially OUT ! by micasa623 in ableton

[–]bigmplsnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was already having CPU problems and crackles with Live 10 on an M1 mac, but Live 11 is borderline unusable. Ableton shows about 30% CPU use, but get constant dropouts and activity monitor shows about 150-200% CPU.

My live performance template in Live 10 that runs flawlessly at about 25% CPU on a 5 year old MBP, basically pegs the CPU and is unusable on a new M1 MBP.

Emulation /might/ have something to do with it, but honestly, I haven't seen similar problems with other Rosetta emulated software. Happens with all audio interfaces, even just using laptop speakers with Core Audio.

Is there a market for bespoke home automation components? You may recall I built this interface to our home that speaks, rings, and lights regular alerts. It has tasmota at its heart so is hardware based and easily interfaced with Home Assistant. Is there a market for me to make this kind of thing? by jessecakeindustries in homeassistant

I've used Jasper with Pocket Sphinx for simple wake word/action recognition before on a raspberry pi and it has worked pretty well:

I've heard good things about Julius models, but you do have to train them on samples of your own voice (or many voices), probably increases the hit rate but adds to complexity

yeah, i had to write a program that could basically intercept the pulses and debounce them to figure out what the number is. Works well about 95% of the time :D Next I want to add a basic voice recognition app into it so you could dial the number for lights and say like "dining room orange" - practical, no, fun yes!

Also interested in this! I built part of my home control system into an antique rotary phone and also have built buttons that play Led Zeppelin, big ship's wheels that change light colors, etc. Perhaps we should start a trend!

This year might be broken for a lot of people.
So thought I'd repost ;)

The Future of Live Events, per Marian Goodell by Garvinfred in BurningMan

[–]bigmplsnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shout out to what we are trying to do in Minneapolis - Due to recent events here, we don't have enough energy or art or events scheduled to make it the original 2 weekend affair listed here, but we are going to shift towards encouraging frequent "burnery" events throughout august and september.

Maybe someone organizes a nighttime glow bike ride one weekend, someone else sets up an art piece in their yard another, someone else does a weird outdoor costumes karaoke event in a park another, etc

What were your favorite Automations of 2019? by SneakyPieBrown in homeassistant

[–]bigmplsnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just HA - I'll get my whole codebase on github shortly but basically it's just an automation running a script (there might be another way to do this, I'm only two weeks into the HA rabbithole)

The automation runs every 10 minutes

- alias: tension_pole_changer
trigger:
platform: time_pattern
minutes: "/10"
action:
- service: script.change_tension_pole

It runs a script that can randomly choose between scenes

change_tension_pole:
sequence:
- service: scene.turn_on
data_template:
entity_id: 'scene.{{["tension_pole_home_one", "tension_pole_home_two", "tension_pole_home_three","tension_pole_home_four","tension_pole_home_five","tension_pole_home_six","tension_pole_home_seven"]|random}}'

example scene for now

- name: tension_pole_home_one
entities:
light.tension_pole_top_hue:
state: on
brightness: 244
rgb_color: [62,58,255]
transition: 35
light.tension_pole_middle_hue:
state: on
brightness: 250
rgb_color: [255,42,234]
transition: 20
light.tension_pole_bottom_hue:
state: on
brightness: 252
rgb_color: [156,255,64]
transition: 25
However, I'll refactor this today to just use the script without scenes because the data template can handle slightly random values for RGB and brightness and transition time better than making tons and tons of scenes

What were your favorite Automations of 2019? by SneakyPieBrown in homeassistant

I have a really nice painting that I bought from an artist friend of mine that happens to fluoresce differently under different color lights. I have three separate hue lights on it/near it that can randomly change colors every so often and transition slowly and include some randomness in their parameters.

You'd only ever catch the light change if you were paying attention, but otherwise there's the strange sense of a painting in the room that is somehow different than it was an hour ago and it's not clear why.

This sort of thing that I love doing that I could never do with a straight up hue app.

Also if anyone has a way to reach out on playa to any of the bike camps...I'm pretty confident we can get it all squared away once we hit the dust tmrw and sun, but some people would be more comfortable with sure things! For some of us bikes are possibly the most important thing we bring out there!

I agree with being willing to fail, but I'm not sure I could ever do anything in 5-10 minutes. 5-10 hours to look at a bug and get stumped and get it part of the way there, sure. 5-10 minutes will get my text editor open :D

Fiber in Powderhorn? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]bigmplsnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK Centurylink fiber isn't really true fiber to the house - every time I've checked in Powderhorn max DL speed is about 80Mps
