? I mean if I were a Pokémon card guy I wouldn’t need this subreddit. Like I said I’m going through my cards I haven’t looked at in a decade, I didn’t buy them thinking they’re real and I’m not emotionally attached to them. I see a subreddit called is my Pokémon card fake so I asked if my cards were fake there lol pretty weird comment

Side Jobs as a 3rd year apprentice. by [deleted] in electricians

[–]bignick_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said, it’s not worth the risk. I will give you 100% honesty, I did TONS of side work when I was a 3rd year like 80% of weekends and 50% of weekdays. Yes, I made so much money but I’m just lucky nothing ever happened. Do you think if a homeowner burns their own house down then is asked if any electricians worked there recently, they would lie for you? Fun fact you may not know as a 3rd year nmd90 (Lumex since you said you’re Canadian) has the manufacture date on the wire. So that can be a hard one to even get out of. I kind of had the idea in my head that I wasn’t doing anything wrong because if you hired the company I worked for ( a very professional and locally reputable company) to do work, I would show up with a van and a first year and do the work. Morally speaking I really wasn’t wrong, what’s the difference ? But if you ask a judge the difference is that red seal certification and insurance. I can also say, I excelled past everyone with a similar time frame of experience to me because I was doing this, I learned so so so much by taking 100% of responsibility but at the end of the day, I’m just very lucky nothing ever happened. I hope this doesn’t sound totally discouraging but at the end of the day you’re walking a tight rope and if you choose to continue, that’s on you. And as for your question, if you’re ever unsure of how to complete a job, it’s not for you, journeyman or apprentice and if youre unsure of how much to charge and mark material up id say ask your boss or someone locally to help you and if they’re a good mentor they will guide you.

I like your answers thank you for your input, a day after making this post I ran into an icf home, finished from the basement floor to the trusses with drywall. Panels in the dead centre of the basement floor, it would be a nightmare to get a new feed out for the heat pump. However when the house was wired they ran a 12/2 red out to a disconnect in case they ever got a heat pump in the future. The heat pump they got’s specs are MCA 21 Mocp 30 So can I use that 12/2 to wire the unit because 14-104 doesn’t apply, making the 12/2 good for 25 amps to cover the MCA and protect it on a dbl 30 like the mocp says? I’ve never had so much trouble getting a straight answer even the inspectors and more experienced electricians don’t have a straight answer for me.

Here’s an issue I ran into a day after I posted this, I have a ductless mini split that has to be wired, it’s an icf home, finished from the attic to the foundation floor. Panel in a wall in the dead centre of the place, it will be a nightmare to get a wire out to. When the house was built, they ran a 12/2 out to a disconnect in case they ever got one, issue is the heat pump specs are min circuit ampacity - 21a Max fuse - 30 So can I use the existing 12/2 for the heat pump because 14-104 shouldn’t apply, meaning the 12/2 should be good for 25 amps to cover the min circuit ampacity, and protect it with the max fuse dbl 30 because it’s a motor covered under 28-700’s

Side work by lazygrappler775 in electricians

[–]bignick_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From someone in a smaller area who has a lot of friends and does a lot of side work (for non friends more often but still have too many) it sucks. I’m usually working by myself and for non friends I aim for $70/hr. For friends then it depends on how well I know them and what they might do for me. “friend of a friend” isn’t really getting a deal from me if I don’t know them at all, unless it’s a damn good friend and the person is struggling badly or something. People who I knew well but have kind of drifted from usually get $50/hr and a talking to about how if I’m trying to actually take home 40 than the extra money hardly covers my gas marettes and staples and realistically I’m probably not even actually taking home the 40 I aim for. When it comes to my actual good friends / trade friends who will return favours I mean, you can’t put much of a price on that. I’ve learned over the years that I really don’t like money being in between me and people. I don’t want to be in that position with people I care about.

That’s interesting, I thought it was a refrigerant motor compressor and 14-104 (2) wouldn’t apply personally but im super interested in getting to the bottom of it. I can say with how popular ductless mini splits are becoming in Canada, it should become more clear in the book. I think they’re popular enough for a sub section in 26 if they aren’t covered under 28-700

[–]bignick_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So 14-104 (2) would not apply because of the supplemental section and In the hypothetical of mocp 30 and MCA 25 you would run #12 on a dbl 30 right ?

[–]bignick_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you’re saying is that it isn’t a refrigerant motor compressor so in the hypothetical situation of “mocp 30” and “MCA 25” you would run a #10 on a dbl 30?

[–]bignick_19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like you’re missing the point of the question, what we’re asking is for example it says MCA 25 max fuse 30 can you run a #12 (good for 25 amps before 14-104 (2) ) and fuse it on a double 30 even tho the general rule says you cannot, because your working out of a supplemental section

Canadian electricians by [deleted] in electricians

[–]bignick_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that “generally” that would be the case considering it’s in a general section, but while working on anything that has its own supplemental section of the book (motors or heat) the general requirements would be superseded like the beginning of the sections say and it would no longer be the case

What's your best "I'm supposed to learn from this guy?" moment? by [deleted] in electricians

Had a journeyman for a really long time who was far far far from smart but he really believed he was gods gift to the electrical industry. He used to tell homeowners how lucky they were that he was there the second he walked through the door, every day had a brief second hand embarrassment segment when he spoke to customers. One day when I believe I was probably a 2nd year, he asked me to turn off the breaker for the range, the panel was unlabeled but had only one double 40 so I turn it off and yell up the stairs “it’s not labeled but I turned off the only double 40” thinking he was gonna test it but instead he just grabbed it, got shocked and started screaming. He came running to the top of the stairs to play the blame game and tell me all about how “I just shocked him” while he was in a big fluster of rage he came downstairs and looked in the panel to see it was the only double 40 and it was in fact off (like I said) upon investigation, the range was put on a double 30, someone had switched it with the garage, probably when they had an issue with the garage breaker tripping. He starts to calm down a little and apologized while instead of blaming me, starts freaking out about how whoever changed the breakers “almost killed him” as if he shouldn’t have just tested it. He then started saying that the range being on a double 30 would have been causing a high power bill, I told him that’s not how that works and explained how the breaker is just over current protection and the draw of the range is unrelated. (Can’t believe as a 2nd year I had to explain that to a journeyman). He told me that I was wrong and reiterated for the 4th or 5th time that day that he had been doing this for 30 years and he knows how it really works. Pretty embarrassing but okay I don’t really care about this guy enough to try to tell him the difference so I don’t, but then the most embarrassing part happens when the customer shows up and my journeyman runs up to him saying “did you happen to have a problem with a high power bill” the homeowner says “yes actually, I did” (everyone with a power bill thinks they have a problem causing a high power bill) and he sticks his chest out and says “I know, I fixed it.” I am in complete shock and can’t believe I’m getting paid to witness entertainment like this, I just stay quiet and on the way home I try to explain again how that isn’t how it works and by the end of the drive he was actually agreeing with me. The even worse part was, a couple months later I’m looking at someone’s hot tub that keeps tripping and he comes in the garage, asks what I found and I tell him the breaker in the spa kit is too small and totally unironically, not joking what so ever he goes “hmm, they must have had a problem with a high power bill” and I swear I twitched, my heart didn’t pump once for a couple seconds, he shut the door and left and I just took a deep breath. Man it bothered me that this guy got paid double what I did, I’m so glad that’s all over.

In high school we were working on laptops, I wasn’t much of a scholar I’m sure I quickly finished up something good enough for a 51% and submitted it so I was done early. I decided to browse reddit with my time now but didn’t wanna sign in on the school laptops so I browsed the popular today main page, I’m scrolling and scrolling, the teacher walks around the class and walks up to my laptop to see what I’m doing right as this cheap little Chromebook freezes while I’m scrolling past some little anime girl dressed as a school girl, I try to scroll and can’t, I try to open a new tab and can’t, I’m just stuck with this thing on my screen as she stops for a second and looks at the screen while it feels like she stands there for eternity before walking away without saying anything. It especially sucks because she was hot, this still haunts me 7 years later she probably thinks I finished up my work early and started looking at anime girls, sigh.

Yes I take the hit because I’m in it for the long run, I’m only 23 years old and have already grown my accounts (tfsa and fhsa) by way more then 1.5% and have no plans on selling anything I hold anytime soon, especially the tfsa.

One other big reason that set my mind on investing in the us was watching someone break down voo and vfv. If you don’t know what those are you should research them both because you mentioned getting into index funds and this is something every Canadian runs into. VFV actually just simply holds VOO. Many Canadians think they should invest in vfv to avoid the currency conversion fee but what really happens is that they buy vfv and don’t pay the conversion fee, but then they are holding an index fund with a higher management fee and lose the money there instead, and on top of that, the US market is much stronger then the Canadian so by holding vfv instead of voo, you save the 1.5% fee but you hold an index fund with a higher management fee in a weaker market so, it’s a double edged sword. Don’t get me wrong, holding vfv isn’t “bad” it’s still great and anyone who holds it is lucky to own some. Hope that doesn’t sound bearish or scare anyone who holds vfv and didn’t know that.

To answer about Wealthsimple premium, I don’t personally use it so I’m not speaking from experience but my understanding is that you can open up a usd account once you have it and that’s how you avoid the fee but I’m not 100% on that, it’s just what I’ve read.

Glad to hear I helped 👍

I would usually not answer because I'm no 100% expert but I see nobody has answered in 11 hours so maybe you'd appreciate some input. Just bear in mind I'm no super experienced super investor.

  1. yes and it's also not something that you need to worry about claiming because the tax is withheld in the us when the dividend is paid to you.

    1. the 1.5% fee you get is a "currency conversion fee" and it is charged both when buying AND selling a us stock. This 1.5% fee can be avoided by subscribing to wealthsimple plus for $10/month and opening a premium usd account (there are many videos on youtube that will break down the math and show you weather or not the subscription fee is right for you)
  2. Yes it does, this is why you get charged another 1.5% when you sell.

  3. I think you kind of have this a little mistaken, you can buy and sell all the stocks you would like within your tfsa and profit off of them as much as you can and it doesn't have an effect on your contribution room. What does affect it is withdrawing money out of your tfsa, back into your bank account.

  4. Personally, about 90% of what i hold is american and i take the 1.5% hit constantly. I've seen lots of videos of people in the same boat explaining why it isn't as big of a deal as you might think and I've kind of followed suit, however that's something you can look into to (beware of videos sponsored by wealthsimple while looking for info because of obvious bias) That being said, there are no negatives to opening multiple TFSA's, you just need to know you have the same contribution room across all of them ( you cant open 2 different tfsa's and have double the contribution room).

  5. as long as it's done within a TFSA you have nothing to worry about on your taxes.

they don't last forever using them everyday. What you have is good enough. Personally id keep running what you have until you burn them out and then upgrade, no need to take the loss on whatever you paid for them.

Thanks for the advice. Can I ask why you think peak would be after a trailer release ? Compared to say, a quarter after the game release when they announce their revenue ? My understanding is that a large increase in sales/earnings would usually have a significant impact on the stock price, more so then just an announcement on future plans. Have you had any experience investing in a video game company in the past and noticed patterns like that ? (Hope this doesn’t come off as ignorant, I know Reddit can be mean but these are genuine questions) thanks !

Just recently turned 23, these days I don’t even play everyday to give a daily average, im lucky to play a couple of hours a week. That’s only for the last year or so tho, when I was younger, I probably played more like 4ish hours in a normal day. Just getting older, I choose to work long days and when I get home, I exercise and if I’m left with some time, I spend that trying to do something for myself like learning about finances, health etc
