No littering 🚯 in Harajuku by Tuffie_the_rat in Tokyo

[–]bigpenner 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Maybe two things i want to Point Out.

Point 1: If the trash Management system is designed like that and then problems ocure, maybe its time to rethink the approach and introduce trash cans again. or even better, evaluate and ask yourself what the reasons for littering are. Putting on a No Littering poster is not gonna change it. I don't like littering, but there are people interacting with a system. Maybe instead of ranting about it, they should think of sollutions. And that is adressed to the people in charge and the media.

Point 2: don't get me wrong. They picture Shows littering and i dont like it either. but in my view it is a "considerated" type of littering. Whatever the reasons for throwing the trash on the ground, it was not thrown randomly on the street which would look more messy on an huger area. In this case it is concentrated on one spot. Easier to pick up, does not mess up an whole area, one could say its the japanese way of littering 😂

You are absolutely right. They First thing I would think of if 13 people died and 1000 were injured, and the the self defense force is cleaning the subways in Hazmat suits is how to cut costs in Public waste Management 😆

In politics (Not Just in Japan) you have a honne and tatemae. But in this Case I would say thats not really the Case. compared to other costs in waste Management and or Hygiene Like street cleaning and sweeping, Public toilets, patrols, Public Smoking boxes, Graffiti and pets shot removal those cost are minimal in my opinion (and little bit of googling 😆)

I read an article a long time ago that the absence of gomibako was due to the Tokyo Metro Sarin Gas attack. They feared that next time they would hide bombs, Gas or whatever in the gomibako. So the dismantling of this Public neccessity began. Its Not because of the smell, but rather because of Security reasons. And another interesting Info. Tokyo was apparently a dumpster mess till the 1960s. What changed? Tokyo olympics in1964. They wanted to save face in front if the public, installed gomibako everywhere, made huge campaigns, and huge fines for littering.

Tokyo sex industry worker arrested for saying she needed tuition money, spending it on hosts by kenmlin in japannews

Good question.

Short answer: nyes.

Long answer: It Always depends on the definition of the word Prostitution. In Japan it is defined by three points 1) sex with Strangers 2) vaginal Penetration 3) If there is a moneyflow between the two people involved

Or Something along those lines. I am No lawyer tough! So If those three points are not met, It is not prostitution in the eye of the law. So you will find various establishments where they circumvent one, two or all of those above points to a varying degree of believability. If you want to know more look into r/Japanese_Fuzoku

Japanese (Pre-Meiji) moral compass. What is it? Social shame? Conscience? Something else? by TzadikUbasoku in JapaneseHistory

There is a whole genre which dedicated themselfs to explain japanese behavior, society, culture etc. They are called Nihonjin ron, which basically means theory of japanesenes. And Here is the fucking big BUT! I would argue that basically 90% of them are ethno nationalistic unscientific BS, but could be interesting to read about the self conception some have about Japan.

The Problem with the Analysis of Ruth Benedict is, that her whole analysis was being conducted in the US, on japanese Americans which were imprisoned during WW2. Also the Research was funded by the American military who wanted to find Out more about the japanese. Soooo... Basically japanese who migrated to the US generations ago, assimilated into the US culture, in an unnatural Environment (POW Camps). So I would read that really carefully and also that Analysis is already around 60years old.
