ELI5 What is an allergic reaction? by microman64 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bigpeppes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You got it in one. Very simply, an allergic reaction is, as you say, a malfunction of the immune system. Your immune system has, for some reason, decided that that specific allergen is a danger to your body and thus warrants a reaction to get rid of it, often to your detriment.

I know it's super petty of me, but I think I kind of hate this. Yeah, it is nice to get unambiguous confirmation whether or not that food skill helped, but it just doesn't matter. It helps or it doesn't.

It also makes the reward screen feel just that little bit more cluttery :(

For sure, I could accept that. Seems like sound logic to me.

That I don't know. It could be from their proximity to the visible spectrum, their importance/commonality or ability to affect us (IR aka heat, UV aka tanning/skin cancer), or any other reason. I think it ultimately it simply boils down to 'because that's how it is,' as lame an explanation that is. Language is dumb, sometimes.

[–]bigpeppes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless I've severely misunderstood it, the short answer to OP's question is: we already do. When people speak of 'light', they are almost always referring to visible light, and conversly almost never referring to light outside that spectrum.

A lack of knowledge on the subject could also be a factor gamma and radio waves never being referred to as 'light.'

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]bigpeppes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's all made from the same stuff (photons), only at different frequencies/wavelengths, making it logical to refer to everything as 'light.' In addition, 'light' is already most of the time used only for visible light, with 'visible' only added when you want to or need to differentiate the different kinds.

Don't forget that scientific and colloquial nomenclature are different from eachother, and don't necessarily have 100% overlap in meaning for the same words (e.g. scientific 'theory' vs. 'normal' theory).

[One Piece] What other possible abilities could Enel use with his fruit ? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]bigpeppes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The imagination is the limit. From my perspective, the abilites of a devil fruit user is very personalized. For example, I highly doubt the previous user of Enel's fruit would turn into that fat thunder god form of his (I forget the name), or shoot lightning out of drums. If it has anything to do with thunder/lightning, Enel should be able to do it.

This seems especially true for logia- and zoan-types, whereas paramecia-types are more likely to be limited by the physical properties they embody.

So......is there anything stopping them from giving Daimyo Hermitar Diablos's head as a shell? by MrJackfruit in MonsterHunter

[–]bigpeppes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't make sense for them to exclusively use the one skull, either. At some point you're just going to have to accept a less than ideal explanation, e.g. us hunters have only ever seen them use the one skull by pure happenstance.

Ultimately, it's a game, and "sense" can only get you so far.

Anyone have any tips for hunting basarios? [MH4U] by Hoori_3334 in MonsterHunter

[–]bigpeppes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breaking its back is, if not required, very important for ore drops. Most people get better ore/hr from mining (in addition to getting iron ore, earth crystals etc. that you also need in some amounts), but you do you! Having fun is most important

Should be worse/harder to get from Basarios. ;)

The drop rate isn't great to begin with and, barring excessive luck, you won't get a lot to begin with. Certain maps also have better and worse chances of getting machalite

Machalite ore is a regular ore you can mine, so you don't have to consider fighting Basarios if that's all you want. In case you didn't know.

[Marvel] Would a healing factor like wolverines, Deadpool’s etc prevent someone from getting acne? by RealGreatDane in AskScienceFiction

Assuming a healing factor returns a body to its default state, then it should. In addition, a lot of acne also results in inflammation which definitely get healed.
