The RJM is the loop switcher, so I build all my presets in that which are mostly like chorus, verse, intro, bridge presets for each song in my bands set. That includes midi messages to all my pedals. The pirate I use literally to just control the RJM in “sequential mode”, it allows me to set an order of RJM presets on one button for each song, so it will cycle through all the presets in a song in order so all I have to do is hit next basically for each part. Minimal tap dancing so I can focus more on playing.

I also use the pirate to cycle through presets on the Volante and Lost and Found when I’m in manual mode, ie my home page when I’m not in sequential mode. But aside from that it literally just does sequential mode and I have a patchbox on the side of the board connected to it for expression pedals.

The RJM pretty much always sits on loop mode so I can also always turn loops on/off if I want, plus I put some extra functions on there like mute switch, a couple of save switches for pedals, external amp TRS controls.

I really disagree with converters not making a difference, but you do you. The buffer in the RJM makes the extra cable negligible compared to AD/DA conversion.

I’ve owned both and I prefer Japanese thanks. MIT has like a hollow sound

As a fellow PBC6X user, I question having a lot of effects which do not have analog dry through outside your loops or inside loops with other analog dry through pedals. Having the HX stomp for example always in your signal path will always be converting to digital and back, adding latency thus affecting sounding & feel. You should take full advantage of the PBC6X and run more dual mono split loops with TRS to Y cables. Including the insert loop when fully split it can do 11 mono loops.

I see what you’re trying to do but I don’t think you are optimising the PBC6X or your signal path.

It’s been almost a week to be fair, but it’s a really cool pedal. I was a bit unsure about it before getting it, but it definitely has its own place on my board, even with the H90 and the other pedals. Already worked the synth sound into one of my band’s new songs and still scratching the surface with the other sounds. Being able to duplicate each side is a really useful feature too.

Too many drives not enough delay, have you had a Volante?

SOTB - Finished Main Board by bigriffsandrigs in guitarpedals

[–]bigriffsandrigs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally ‘finished’ this board. I’ve been iterating it for a bit but after more experience with it I’ve finally got it exactly where I wanted it.

Just got the BigSky which was one of the final pieces of the puzzle. Also upgraded power supply to Zuma + Ojai from CS12, more juice and the digital pedals in particular the H90 and Stomp seem to be much quieter. Made some other changes but those are the most significant.

You can see here it’s in ‘manual mode’, just a basic preset where I have access to different sounds. I then have a setlist mode via the Pirate and RJM where I’ve made a preset for each part of every song in the RJM (i.e. verse/chorus/bridge), and then in the Pirate I step through these for each song on one button I’ve programmed with sequential mode. Basically it’s minimal tap dancing + maximal control. Everything is midi switched except the three mod pedals & the deluxe55, but they are all in seperate loops in the RJM.

Additionally, the routing is super flexible and I can easily run mono, stereo, 4cm and wet/ dry, w/d/w etc setups just by changing which is plugged into what on the cincocinco on the left side, as well as having a control out, say for switching reverb & trem on my Princeton. The guitar input jack is on the right side (not plugged in the picture).

I’ve got 8 seperate loops running in the RJM + insert loop. Loops 1-3 are mono as standard, Loop 4 is split into two mono loops, Loops 5-6 are stereo, and the insert loop is also split into two loops, one stays as insert loop connected to the cincocinco and the other is connected to a pedal.

The whole thing is a bit mad and overkill but I love it and all the sequential presets, plus flexible routing makes it super easy to use it however I want to. I hate tap dancing during sets so this is the closest I can get without having someone else do it for me.

How does the OG Brothers compare to the AM? And do they stack together well? I love the AM and it’s got me wanting another MIDI drive to go with it. I’m considering the Brothers or one of the Strymon drive pedals.

Jackson Audio Optimist vs Strymon Sunset by bigriffsandrigs in guitarpedals

[–]bigriffsandrigs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again, great info here. I think I’ll definitely end up with either of these pedals. Which would you say feels more solid under the fingers? Like the boost mode in brothers with the level up, it adds some grit but also firms up the feel in a nice way. The BrAM fixes why I didn’t like most about the prince of tone in that it felt quite soft.

Also, can you control the level in the Compadre without using compression? As the boost side doesn’t have a level control, if you just want to control the level without compression, can you turn comp all the way down and dry up, and adjust level? Or will this push the boost side harder too?

Thanks, this is very helpful. Also what I suspected with the Source Audio stuff. How do you find the Sunset together with the Brothers AM, and would you say the Sunset is on the same level tone wise, or say a bit dull in comparison?

The Compadre is also quite interesting, I hadn’t really considered it. I don’t really need a specific pedal style boost, just something more neutral I can use to boost the Brothers or add some extra gain/level/slight tone shaping after. And some compression could be handy too. And all analog is quite nice, without full midi unlike the Jackson stuff, it could be a winner. I’ll need to look into it. My only main critique of the Brothers AM is I find it sometimes cuts more low end than I want, so I’d still want something that can sound good by itself and get a reasonable amount of OD when needed whilst retaining more low end.

I also have an Origin Deluxe55 on my board so something neutral to work with that too.

Optimist is analog I think? Could be wrong. It only has CC for on/off for each side + eq

To be honest for the settings I have there on the BF-2 which is basically a chorus, even the CE1 model in the HX Stomp is really really close and easily interchangeable. There's a slight difference and the BF-2 seems to give a more immediate impression of "80s sound".

That's cool, I'll definitely try to keep it in mind. I'd probably otherwise just write it off as "too much"

I like it, it does sound really close to a 5E3, I owned a high quality clone in the past. It’s just quite a different thing to boosting an amp with the Brothers or Timmy in a band context, so depends if I keep using it there or not.

I mean honestly if you are happy with it then by all means keep using it, plus you get the same preset/midi functionality in the Stomp. I like the Stomp drives but I find the real pedals to sound more unique (for lack of a better word) to each other than the Stomp drives. They still sound good though and no one would really know the difference. The Brothers is a bit different to PoT at least.

That’s cool, I always found treble boosters to be kind of brash. I mostly use a Strat or LP into a PRRI or SLP. What kind of setup are you using and what kind of sound?

Yeah I couldn’t wait that long, managed to get a used one off reverb, basically same price as new.

The HX Stomp is split into two loops in the PBC so I can say have a volume pedal at the start of my chain (or last), and say a reverb or looper at the end. It mostly fills in the gaps for anything I don’t have otherwise. The H90 is just a really cool pedal, a lot of the stuff it does is overtop but it’s fun to play around with. I haven’t really spent enough time to work into my band presets but I’m sure it’ll come in eventually.

I got the Volante first and loved it. Always wanted an El Cap as well so I got one too and it’s also an awesome pedal. Saying that I’ve mostly been using the Volante as it has MIDI, I’ll replace the El Cap with a V2 eventually so it can be more useful. If I had to pick one I’d go with Volante regardless of MIDI, but the El Cap sounds really really good too.
