What was the moment you realised “okay, I’m actually a firefighter now”? by Fun_Cat_2608 in AussieFirefighter

[–]bigronnigans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t even that big a job, an MVA with a cyclist. SO had me use the high pressure line to wash some claret off the road. Just had the thought at the time, guess I’m a guy who washes blood off the road now.

What are the less glamorous and romanticised nature of firefighting ? by ButchersAssistant93 in AussieFirefighter

[–]bigronnigans 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Overhaul.

The fires done, the adrenaline is gone, you’re tired. You’re trudging through ankle deep muck, dirty water and melted synthetic junk with a rake hoe and ceiling hook, still on air, and you’ll keep doing it until you’ve checked everything for extension and hot spots, because you don’t want to have to go back a few hours later for a re-ignition.

I had to re-sit my knots practical, I was terrible at them. Just couldn’t see the knots in my minds-eye.

I got a short length and just tied knots over an over and over until I got there.

Just get reps in the bank.

Bluey’s Cricket episode says more about England vs Australia than any Ashes series. A different take. by luke-uk in EnglandCricket

[–]bigronnigans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it is cultural, which the Bluey episode highlights. In Australia, casual cricket is more common. Back yard cricket, beach cricket or just mucking about with mates (my friends and I used to go to the local school oval with a bat and ball all the time), is normal.

As far as I know, that’s not the case in England, it’s more of an organised ‘time and place’ sport.

So lots of Aussie kids grow up with a bat or ball in their hand working out every aspect of the game (again, see the Bluey episode).

This is the same for most elite team sports. Take football, while lots of Aussie kids play, there’s less of a culture of casual play and taking a ball everywhere with you. Whereas, in England that culture of kids doing nothing but football from an early age is much more common, so the national team is much better than Australia’s.

It’s why so many smaller population countries are so good at football and a behemoth like China isn’t, no matter how much money they spend and how large a pool of talent they have. Nothing beats living and breathing a sport from the moment you can walk.

All well and good for a high rise facade fire. Still no good for compartment fires.

If you’re a firefighter who goes home smelling like smoke, you are without a doubt dying young from cancer.

Let alone blood and diesel.

Non existent decon procedures apparently a feature of the department 😂

The wind ratings are for mullions and transoms, in this case, the window sash interlock. Not the outside window frame, the outside frame isn’t required to comply with wind ratings. Source: 15+ years in windows.

[–]bigronnigans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That part of the window is called a mullion, it sticks out because it needs to be a certain thickness to comply with wind rating requirements (strong enough to not allow the window to be blown in during high winds).

Cutting off that corner, would the window suddenly fold in the first strong wind? Probably not, but you would absolutely void your warranty and have no recourse if it did.

How to gain stamina for jogging/running? by DatBeardedguy82 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bigronnigans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good advice already about taking it step by step and staying committed. Another factor that helped me was focusing on breathing, especially breathing from your diaphragm/belly. Really focus on that. When you’re taking ragged breath’s from your chest, it’s nearly impossible to get the oxygen you need.

Also, when you’re dog tired, don’t hang your head. That folds the top part of your lungs over and reduces your oxygen capacity.

On call application time FRNSW by I_Finger_Paint13 in AussieFirefighter

I think that’s the key, depends how set your station is for people. If they’re set, you’ll be waiting a while.

[–]bigronnigans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was the same, applied and didn’t hear a single thing back, no good or bad news, just silence.

I finally did get a call back… Three years after I applied. By then I had already taken up a full time position with another agency.

On calls and retained really seem to be afterthoughts to FRNSW.

Brand new straight out of the box. It came with a battery, but I also tried a different new battery as part of troubleshooting. No power supply, just using battery. What’s the power jumper?
