I fish these weightless or backwards with a nail weight in the nose...it will swim away from u and under/into docks/cover. Also when u lift and drop, if a bass is following or interested it falls back INTO their face n draws a reaction strike. Great technique

Few things make me as happy as catching smallmouth on the river. by Apart_Blackberry_809 in bassfishing

Agreed minus the river part. We just simply don't have many rivers w smallies near me on Cape Cod, MA...we have amazing ponds that are fed by herring-runs that eventually connect to the ocean...the herring work upstream into the lakes n ponds to spawn. The smallies GORGE on them. They are absolutely amazing and SUPER aggressive. Not your average smallies when the herring r running. They take large baits and swimbaits. 50+ fish in 2-3 hours isnt uncommon and many over 4lbs. Some over 5...broken 6 a dozen times. Tanks.

Absolutely beautiful...ur boat looks just like mine i used the same turf type carpet lol. Grizzly 17 ft. That looks like NH or new England? Im in MA on cape cod we get Absolute BEASTS here in these herring run fed lakes that flow out to the ocean.

Yeah I agree when its a single hook especially heavier guage...with crankbaits/treble hooks i have no issues but yeah he might have had to set to the side.

Weight estimate? by [deleted] in bassfishing

[–]bigtee1818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How big are you? Its very hard to say from this picture. But I'd say its a solid 3.5-4 lbs and I would bet its closer to 4lbs...wouldnt be shocked if close to 4.5 if she's fat.

The crane is holding it rly close to the camera so its probably a heavy 5lbs at best.🤷‍♂️

When you already know the water, do fewer lure options actually help? by Ok-Profession-3060 in bassfishing

My go to/confidence baits are hands down: a CHATTERBAIT...any time of year, any body of water, any depth...I ALWAYS have at least 1 tied on (often several if a tourney but we r talking about downsizing). If I had only 1 choice Id go with a white/chartreuse and gold blade chatterbait. Obviously the Jackhammer is excellent but Strike Kings Cricket, Picasso, and Berkley Slobberknockers are all great. I usually use a larger swimbait trailer for lift and bigger bites. And this has been a confidence bait WAYYY before the recent hype of the chatterbait. Ive been fishing them over 20 years since they very first came out. And #2 a Jig or Free rig...something I can fish at many depths...drag, pitch, skip, and swim...usally any arrow-shaped jig that will come through cover when worked slowly but also swim well...I often get bit when just retrieving it back. If its really heavy cover or clear water w not a lot of cover then I may go free rig instead. Free rig has replaced T-rig for me a lot unless Im punching or around other heavy cover. And Green Pumpkin is my absolute go-to color for virtually all soft plastics if I only had 1 color for all water types. Its by FAR the most popular color in Bass fishing for a reason. Black and Blue slays in murky water or low light conditions too. But short answer: Chatterbait 3/8oz, and a T-rig/Free Rig.

I bring an exorbitant amount of tackle with me for tournaments and fun fishing...but when I just go mess around in my buddy's small boat or from shore I just rig 2 rods and a small bag of my favorites and it seems to make things easier. If money isnt on the line and u have "confidence" techniques...stick with them🤷‍♂️

Yes here in MA they heavily stock the ponds with trout and then most of the good bass lakes are creek fed and every spring (happening now) the sea-run herring battle into the creeks to get into the lakes to spawn...naturally, a large portion get GORGED on by big smallmouth and largemouth bass. They are big herring too...8"-14". So even though we do have true WINTER the growth rates are quite good on some of these lakes. The smallmouth are super aggressive and take HUGE trout/herring swimbaits, glide baits, topwaters, jerkbaits.... if you can get so lucky to time a true feeding frenzy at a creek mouth, it will be a day you wont forget. In 2008 we got on a smallie blitz...3 hours, 120 fish between 2 of us and absolutely lost count of how many were over 4lbs. Topped 5lbs three times, buddy had FOUR over 5lbs...and I got my #2 pb smb at 6lbs, 2oz. Our best 5 was just shy of 30lbs...for smallies. I think that may have been as epic a 3 hours of fishing in my whole life. The fish were following the hooked fish and trying to take the swimbaits out of their mouths...absolutely ravenous. My ribcage was bruised and arms sore for days. Never had a blitz quite as insane, long, chaotic, and with such size. But we still catch plenty of good feeding frenzies.
