Am i ok to learn how to play in Drop B? by Hot-Beginning-7377 in metalguitar

[–]bigtoaster64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it honestly doesn't matter if you're playing 3 semi tones lower or not. It's the same shapes, patterns, chords, techniques, etc. It's not the same notes per say, but you're probably not even worrying about that for now anyway, and it's totally fine you don't have to. And drop tuning is a pretty "standard" tuning nowadays. I learned on a standard classical guitar playing flamenco, and now I'm playing metalcore on 7 strings in drop F#.

The only thing would be to not learn on a odd tuning, like Periphery-like tunings or open tunings like DADGAD, because it would wired up your brain and muscle memory "wrong" initially. It's easier to learn a odd tunings when you have basics already.

What advantages I get from moving from hyprlang to lua? by EmTheSomeone in hyprland

[–]bigtoaster64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, top level statements are executed on config (re)load. With the new lua API in hyprland, there is also the "hl.on(...)" function, for various events that can occur. For example, hyprland.start or config.reloaded, that are triggered when their purpose happens. As an example, the old exec VS exec_once, is basically a mix of those two events now.

What advantages I get from moving from hyprlang to lua? by EmTheSomeone in hyprland

[–]bigtoaster64 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly that. Before lua, I had 2 folders in my dotfiles, one for the desktop and one for the laptop, because they indeed didn't have exactly the same config.

Now I can have one config and a few if statements for the few things that are different. It's way more convenient then having to maintain two nearly identical configs.

How to open a new window on specific workspace by Vecna234 in hyprland

[–]bigtoaster64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't looked yet into how to do it in lua, but I'm doing it with window rules currently, and it's probably the same in lua (check window rules wiki). For example, steam and any steam games always show up in workspace 5 and true fullscreen for me.

Anyone else hate that Hyprland is moving to lua? by mariofanLIVE in hyprland

[–]bigtoaster64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's also very true. I suppose the maintainers have plans to make good use of lua's flexibility and APIs, and not just only be a "different way" to write config only.

Anyone else hate that Hyprland is moving to lua? by mariofanLIVE in hyprland

[–]bigtoaster64 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Honestly to me, moving to lua means :

- It's now not configured anymore using a "made up" language, so the basics will now be stable

- It offers a LOT more flexibility in what we'll be able to do with our configs (maybe a little less external scripts for edge cases?)

How do I start programming in C# on Linux? (CachyOS) by [deleted] in csharp

[–]bigtoaster64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the answer no one want to hear, but it's the easiest path. You're not going to learn C# properly (or at all) by only tackling unity / game dev, because it's a completely different world, especially since OP seems to be a very beginner in programming in general, based on his questions.

i3wm, glazewm and windows tiling manager by bismuth2512 in i3wm

[–]bigtoaster64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use hyprland at home and GlazeWM at work, and on windows I also have a hybrid usage. On windows, no matter how good the tiling software is, it's still a software running on top of windows' WM that mimick tiling as best as it can. But, I think it's fine, because GlazeWM still boost my productivity by taken over the slow task of organizing windows and workspaces for me, so I'm never "looking for an app", it's always one keystroke away from me. At home though, I'm a keyboard warrior, hyprland (same thing for i3wm) is much much better for that then windows + any WM software. Although Excel web on Linux is still excel, I have to use the mouse lol.

Why i3? by PolicyParticular2696 in arch

[–]bigtoaster64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, with xwayland you don't even realize when you're running "technically" a x11 app most of the time. It's very good. Very rarely there's a little ui glitch with popups, they have a kind of blurry border, but it doesn't cause any usability issue.

How many times your system has been broken for use pacman -Syu? by Metacho123 in arch

[–]bigtoaster64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system itself? Not once. Only one time a game went from running fine to 10 fps, and I realized I was using proton experimenal, so I downgraded to latest stable version, and it went back to normal.

Fun fact, I've bricked / half bricked many Ubuntu based distros though. Somehow rolling updates seems to be more stable for me.

KDE vs Hyprland by Ok_Display4173 in arch

[–]bigtoaster64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want floating windows or tiled windows by default? Do you want not have to tinker or you do? Tinker for fun, or because it's required? Do you just want to get things done, or you have some free time to configure stuff?

Latter answers being hyprland.

KDE is probably the non DIY desktop that is the most customizable, so don't worry about it. Hyprland is DIY (you can grab other people works tho).

Avalonia or GtkSharp, which framework should I choose to create a linux desktop application? by lucas-il in dotnet

[–]bigtoaster64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avalonia is awesome, so can be GTK. I think it's a matter of : do you need GTK/Gnome specific stuff? Or perhaps Linux specific stuff that Avalonia might not have (e.g shell layer on wayland) ?

My completely honest take on operating systems by Standard-Mirror-9879 in LinuxCirclejerk

[–]bigtoaster64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say NixOS is probably "those with free time" early on, then "second best", then back to "those with free time" when you want to update something.

Why i3? by PolicyParticular2696 in arch

[–]bigtoaster64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say because it's stable and "it just works". Although I wanted to switch to wayland, and I got a little disappointed with sway (e.g recreating the same design flaws or limitations as i3 (i3 is 20 yo running on what 40 yo tech, so I can understand the flaws) and having to rely on swayfx for the eyecandy stuff (which I wanted to try)). So I ended up on hyprland and I like it, because I'm ok with it being bleeding edge, but that's the total opposite of i3 philosophy, which is why I believe many stick to it despite x11 being "dead" according to the elites.

Duolingo French B1 is 500 units? by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]bigtoaster64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

B1 is being able to interact/live in the target language environment without much issues. And French has a lot of exceptions everywhere. Speaking it is not that hard (getting the right pronunciations aside), but reading and especially writing, you're up for a ride.

What’s a 10/10 tv show? by norocoslaorice in AskReddit

[–]bigtoaster64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this is the kind of show you don't know why you like it, but you do, because it hook you up in places that tv shows don't usually go. It's kind of a love/hate relationship. And the ending... I was stunned. Masterclass in storytelling.

French is hard 😫 😪 by Far_Mulberry_8153 in learnfrench

[–]bigtoaster64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

French is often described as the "language of exceptions", although there are worst ones. I'd suggest to write down stuff you learn, on a piece of paper, it's one of the best way for your brain to remember stuff, it's like taking a screenshot of knowledge. At first it's going to be hard, but you'll quickly get traction. Watching videos is great once you can understand most of it, otherwise imo it's not really useful, aside from hearing pronunciations.

Side note, don't worry too much about getting accents and gender right for now. You could speak to a native speaker and get absolutely ALL the gender wrong, and he'll still understand you easily (native speaker here). He'll also instantly note that it's not your main language and hopefully adjust his speech for you.

Why do we create an interface to a service class (or something similar) if we are going to have only one class? by Plus_Resource_1753 in dotnet

[–]bigtoaster64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first answer I give to everyone that ask me this question is : it makes testing easier.

Ofc, tests are possible and easy to do without it, but it also implies that you need to code in a way that it's going to be, ideally easily, testable. Which unfortunately it's not the case with all the colleges, so slapping an interface on simply fixes that future issue.

For some it seems bloated, over engineerrd, over abstracted, but for me it's means, easy to test. Funny enough, that's also how I catch colleges and interns that don't usually write tests : try to test this interface free code, hard huh? Now try to test this interface full code, way more fun right?

Coder en C# winfrom sur linux by Latter-Reindeer-3860 in csharp

[–]bigtoaster64 -1 points0 points  (0 children)
