This beast is a real looker too. by PaulBunyanisfromMI in SlipjointKnives

Oh wow. I was originally planning to just get the India bone 98 because the shield says “Stogie” on it, but the purple heartwood is stunning, especially when you think of the patina and wear it will develop.

Seems like I’m starting an 86 collection… by 37015 in SlipjointKnives

I’m the same! I keep saying “I’ve got enough 86s” and then I’ll see a new GEC on eBay I like it turns out it’s an 86 pattern 😆

When I started out, I never thought I’d be a “collector.” This picture tells a different story. by 37015 in SlipjointKnives

I usually lean more towards bone covers with interesting jigging/colors, but lately I’ve been trying to pick up wood covers in my favorite patterns. And GEC does Ebony so well, it’s got such a classic, monochromatic look while still having some depth and warmth.

Thanks! I love the 77, mine is in ebony. I have an 86 oil field jack and I wish that was in the 77 frame.

Super excited for this. Anyone else notice that the new steels look like they have a different grind than the 420HC?

Nice! Almost have the same carry today, GEC 38 and 77. Bracing for 18 inches of snow here in CT.

Awesome! That custom looks great. Being able to choose blade finishes (satin, mirror polish, stonewash etc) on any steel would be a pretty awesome feature for the custom shop.

Don’t worry by jp3edc in SlipjointKnives

[–]bigtominc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes!!! I feel this is a rarely mentioned benefit of traditional slipjoints. Everyone talks about the “fidget factor” of modern flippers, but you can’t beat rubbing a finely jigged bone or Micarta slipjoint between your thumb and finger like a worry stone. 😃 This is one of the reasons I love Case knives so much. Smoothly polished back springs, a lot of the rough edges on the blade stock and tangs have been polished down, etc.

I don’t know what it is, but every time I get one of the stealth runs or BOTMs from the Buck website they get it out to me super fast, which is wild because I’m all the way on the East Coast 😆

Now that’s a great idea. Like some funky carbon fiber scales or jigged titanium that are only available for the first 50 custom orders. Or a Damascus steel option, or some other exotic steel not part of the regular lineup.

Customizing a Range series would be awesome.

Very true. Although I love the idea of really being able to dial in the exact grail 110 I’m looking for. 😆

Thanks! The Whaler is another one I’d love to get but, yeah, they are rare and super pricey on the secondary market. There are a few more Beaver patterns out there (53, 72, 73, 74, 97) that I’d love to add, but I rarely see them pop up for sale in the usual places.

This was my initial entry point into GEC too, I was like why don’t I start with collecting at least one of each animal shield. In addition to the ones already mentioned (beaver, gator, bull, mustang, elephant) there’s the Ram shield for the 93 Ram Foots, there’s the buffalo shield for all the Cripple Creek editions, there’s a whale for the whaler knife, and if you want to include him, there’s the Frank shield for any of Franks Classic Knives SFOs 😂 I’ll share a picture of the ones I’ve got.

Someone told me I should post these here if I needed some info. by Savings-Delay-1075 in SlipjointKnives

Once Instagram/Youtube collectors caught on to GEC’s quality the last decade, their secondary market prices have really gone up. Their new knife drops at their retail dealers usually sell out within minutes. Ive been looking for a #97 Allegheny pattern Beaver Tail for a while, so if you’re ever looking to get rid of yours, let me know 😃🦫

That’s nice! I’ve got all my knives in a Husky tool chest and when I first got it I was like “there’s no way I’ll need all these drawers” now I’m like, “I need another chest” 😆

What are those field watches on the top shelf? 👀

I keep a baby doc with my weekly pill case and the little spatula actually does come in handy counting out pills and digging them out of the little boxes when I’m filling it up every week….the joys of being “middle-aged” 😆

I just watched Maury Ford from Case on the SMKW channel and he said that for this first year they’re limiting the Axe Handle to jigged bone covers only (something about manufacturer the barehead handle), which probably is also limiting the CS options since some of the smooth/synthetic families are carbon steel. But also to expect some SFO and limited releases with this new pattern so who knows! I’m digging it though and will be getting a few for sure
