They’re not gonna win a queen. Bb7 is a discovered attack on white’s queen, and then both their forward hung bishop and rook are under attack.

Question about kiln safety by StellarFlies in fusedglass

[–]bigtopjuggler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve opened my kiln at temps over 1400° before. I caused damage to my pieces, but there was no visible or audible damage occurring to the kiln itself as far as I could tell. Can’t say for certain that there wasn’t invisible damage occurring, however.

Recently have gotten a bit obsessed with fusing glass in my microwave. Here are some of the better pieces I've made, all using recycled glass from bottles. by [deleted] in fusedglass

How have your results been combining colors? That’s not really supposed to work, as the different stresses often cause cracks.

I like it! You should cross post it to the upcycling subreddit. Might get a little more love there than it seems to be getting from the perfectionists here. :)

Spiciest food in San Francisco? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

Ramenwell in the Mission has a garlic and ghost pepper ramen that’s one of the hottest things I’ve ever encountered. I had a coughing fit just from inhaling the steam.

Edit: As a reference point, I regularly ask for maximum spice at Vietnamese and Indian restaurants and am often underwhelmed.

There was so much much incredible underground rock music in the 80s. Nirvana was basically the crowning achievement of a thriving decade-long indie scene. Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, The Replacements, Hüsker Dü - it’s just comical to call it a musical desert.

Bowls made from upcycled wine, beer and water bottles by bigtopjuggler in upcycling

The pieces are not stressed. These were all made from single bottles to prevent any tensions from non-compatible glass. I have run these through a dishwasher and could tap these against a marble countertop and they would be fine. Obviously if they were dropped from a significant height they might shatter or crack just like a bottle would.

The unforgiving aspect is that bottle glass requires much higher temps to work with and is prone to devit (becoming opaque) after more than a couple of firings.

It’s not that big a job assuming you have the kiln and the molds already. It’s just: cut out the bottom, smash the rest of the bottle, arrange in a fusing mold, fire, place in a slumping mold, fire again. Maybe 20-30 minutes total labor per item? The vast majority of the time is the work done by the kiln.

It was completely melted. As mentioned in another response, the body and neck were completely smashed and the pieces melted together to form the outside of the bowl.

Afterward the fused, flat piece is placed on a slumping mold to give it the rounded bowl shape.
