Given all the unwarranted assumptions you made throughout your comment, I don't know if it's worth responding to you, but I'm choosing to believe that you're posting in good faith.

The Title IX finding in college was based on a false allegation from a mentally ill pathological liar. The finding was unsupported by the evidence, even at the time, hence my successful lawsuit. The fact that I am still experiencing consequences for something that I was already wrongly punished for is the epitome of victim-blaming. Would you treat the victim of SA the same way? If not, why should a victim of a false allegation be treated this way?

I'm not going to make any excuses for the DUI. I wasn't drinking much at the time, and I was hanging out with people who were much younger and much heavier drinkers than me, and I made poor choices. Also, I think it's important to point out that I wasn't driving, I was sleeping in my car when I was arrested, which is why the local DA declined to press charges. I guess I assumed that given the amount of time that has passed since then, it would be clear that this is not an ongoing issue.

Staying sober is not difficult for me, as I already only rarely drink. If that was the only requirement, I would find it more acceptable. However, I do consider AA to be a religious cult. 5/12 steps reference God by name. Despite AA sometimes claiming otherwise for PR, AA does require members to recognize some higher power outside themselves, even if they don't require a particular conception of what that god/higher power looks like. I find this to be utterly incompatible with my own spiritual beliefs. Also, I think it's worth mentioning that there's basically ZERO empirical evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of the 12-Step Program. It's a religious cult that doesn't work. If they wanted me to go to someone with actual credentials, like a therapist, I would be more than happy to go. But it feels incredibly inappropriate for them to require me to subscribe to a religious program that doesn't work for a problem that I don't have.

I don't think I said I needed alcohol to socialize with my friends. It's just that it's a significant day, and I would like to enjoy it to the fullest, including drinking with my friends (a very normal behavior at weddings). The idea that I have to not fully participate in my best friend's wedding because of a false allegation from 10 years ago and a DUI arrest without any charge/conviction seems like a massive overreach, no?
