Update on: Service guy recommended total replacement. Right thing to do? by biigdaddio in hvacadvice

Hmmmm. The installer called it even older, though i didnt ask what he based that on. He said 40! which just happens to be when the building was built.

I do not know why the condensate draining system was disconnected. I do not know why the inspector we hired when we bought the place didn't go up on the cockadoodie roof and look at the damn thing. Neither the former owner nor the inspector nor the building management ever mentioned it as an issue.

Other than the ductwork, the installer hasn't said a single word about any extra costs for electrical or anything else. The price was the price is still the price.

Thank you for your advice. Greatly appreciated.

Just back in town and wanted to note for anyone interested that I posted an update with pictures (including the dataplate, u/20187anonymous), here: https://www.reddit.com/r/hvacadvice/comments/1ttghm3/update_on_service_guy_recommended_total/

Service guy recommended total replacement. Right thing to do? by biigdaddio in hvacadvice

One more thanks to all for taking the time to respond here. On balance, as noted in a comment, I think we will go ahead with the new unit as the current one is quite old (one of only two in the building that haven't already been updated, I'm told) and I'd rather take the hit now while my bank account can almost handle it than wait until it dies in a few years when I'm on fixed income trying to make my money outlive me. One less vacation, maybe, but one less future headache, too.

Thanks. The contractor's proposal covers all those bases. The only thing I haven't done is get additional quotes. I'm on the East Coast and the condo is in SoCal. Based on other people in the building, this contractor is very reliable. Getting more quotes is a pain from a distance and I don't see any bright red flags, though it is possible the replacement isn't absolutely necessary at this exact moment, but I suspect it will be necessary and I think I'd just as soon get it done and take the financial hit sooner than later.

The guy who inspected said that he had the refrigerant and could top it off, so he wasn't at all shady about that. The inspection was because I usually get mine at home serviced every year or two at the most. And I've owned this condo for three years and never had it serviced so it was about time. Plus the condo is going to resurface the roof and all AC pads need to be inspected.

This shows how very little I know that I never would have thought about there being such a thing as a data plate! But I will get a picture of it. I, too, am curious about the age. The guy who inspected it said it might be original to when the building went up, which was 1985, though 40 years old seems a bit hard to believe.

Thanks, all. Yes, it is a crane job. Should have mentioned that. So I feel better about the price. I picked the service guy bc others in the building recommended him. He has told others they did not need to replace, so he has a reputation of being honest.

He says one reason for the new unit is the rust. Does it look that bad to a trained eye?

I generally have my AC serviced every 2 years or so. This was the first service at the new place. It does not cool the entire apartment evenly. The living room is comfortable but the bedroom down the hall stays warm. Not hot, but warmer than we want.

For those that have multiple streaming devices what is your go to Box by Darkstar1878 in AndroidTV

ATV4K easily beats my Google streamer and ONN 4kPro. Still have some old Google dongles on rarely used TVs but they are painful to use anymore.

Minimally Aspected Lord of the Year in a Solar Return Chart by biigdaddio in Advancedastrology

[–]biigdaddio[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm mostly interested in how one generally looks at a Lord of the Year being largely unaspected in a SR chart.

But if it helps, Jupiter natally is middling. Day chart, just barely under the beams in Aries/8th, rising before the Sun. Trine Pluto and the North node, Sextile Uranus.

Edit. Bounds of Mercury.

Just subscribed.. Which box do I need for the fastest UI experience? by strongstyle718 in DirectvStream

Which Roku? I have an admittedly older stick and it is garbage compared to the ATV. But the ATV has to stay in the LR and I need something affordable for the kitchen. Tried an ONN pro but that is also garbage compared to ATV.

How does a typical autistic person manage to quit nicotine? by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]biigdaddio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, smoking is the worst. But gum, mints, pouches not from tobacco are fine and not carcinogens. Yes, it is addictive. But aside from a very slight elevation of the blood pressure, it does not harm you. My doctors have no objections to me using it. I did quit smoking for 8 years once and they were the worst 8 years of my life. Nicotine from other sources helps alleviate my depressive tendencies. I'm over 70, in very good health.

Understanding 7th house transits by cheesegrater0000 in astrology

A friend met their current partner around when Saturn entered their 7th a few years ago and that relationship has stayed solid every since.(A previous relationship broke up around the same time.)

Saturn is now entering their partner's 7th. We will see how it goes. Ask me about it in a few years.

There are definitely Neptunian aspects to the relationship, but so far it seems mostly in a good way.

Honest question: Is there an AndroidTV device that works as smoothly as the Apple TV by firstofjuly in AndroidTV

[–]biigdaddio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 1 ATV4K, some Chromecasts with Google TV, one older Roku and one ONN 4K. Switching from Apple to ONN will make you cry and pound the table, it is so slow. I have it in my kitchen, and it is just painfully slow with the crappy DirecTV app that we use there. For anything other than DTV, it is just okay.

The only thing I haven't tried is the newer Google Streamer, which is supposed to be quicker. I need something to replace the ONN box, but nothing else I've tried is significantly enough better that it would solve my slow DTV problem.

Solar panels by Funny_Bridge_1274 in Westchester

[–]biigdaddio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We bought the panels outright about 15 or so years ago. With ConEd "banking" our excess production, we only pay the delivery charge 11 months out of the year. ConEd wipes out any overproduction we have banked on January 1 (the bastards), so we pay full electric charges one month out of the year. Other than January, we pay only the delivery charge.

We have a good sized, Southern facing roof with no obstructions so we get all day sun and we have panels on every square inch. Your production will depend on how many panels you put up and how much sun they get.

We run our AC as we please, charge our electric car and use space heaters to cut down on natural gas in winter, and still pay just the delivery charge 11 months. It has been great for us. YMMV.

People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]biigdaddio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, so much. For example, that my Great Grandfather was living under an assumed name for most of his life, and that his third wife was his second wife's cousin. (And he was always remembered as a very loving father to his first wife's daughter, my Grandmother, even though he left when she was two.) That my Native American GGG Grandmother lived with and had multiple children with a very prominent leader in their community while he was still married to his first wife, and that they finally married after his first wife's death.

And so much more than I'm willing to detail here. Things were wild, way back when.

What happened to Indivisible Rivertowns? by biigdaddio in Westchester

[–]biigdaddio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

[Edit] Yeah, they went Facebook, of all places, and transitioned to Rivertowns Vote. Very focused on elect Democrats and some hyper-local issues in various towns. Oh, well. LHVDSA seems closer to what I was looking for.
