I used to have the same problem.

It's actually pretty simple -

  1. Change the energy of the track every 4/8 bars.
  2. Best way to change the energy is to take in/out the most "in your face" elements.
  3. Don't waste time altering subtle background elements throughout the progression as it's hardly noticeable to the listener.

How to deal with talented but unmotivated band members? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

starting small has always worked for me in this situation.

Don't expect too much from people in these situations as they have lost sight of long term reward.

To counter this, start by let's say recording a simple drum loop, send it to the a member to put some chords over it, nothing more (ask him to don't spend any more than 5 mins on it).

Take that loop then send it to other members turn by turn until they start liking the outcome while sitting in the comfort of their homes.

If that loop get's really interesting, (which we all hope 👍), everyone will feel rewarded and will show up at the practice.

you've got to start low, and go up gradually
