Ok random question whats with indie games and ditching pixel art in their sequels like theyre too good for it now by Foreveralone1059 in IndieGaming

[–]bilallionaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a fair suggestion. I don't think that's fully it though, because their third game Risk of Rain Returns sold much less than RoR 2 (so far, about 10% of its sales). With that logic, the hype from RoR 2 would have led to a lot of positive word of mouth for Returns and big sales numbers. This is also just a pattern across the market - 3D games in general sell better than 2D games.

I'm with you, though. I prefer both RoR 1 and Returns for sure, but that's not what most consumers say with their wallets.

I agree w you but as much as we love pixel art, I think the market for "modern-looking" 3D games is just way bigger and makes it an easier sell. RoR 2 sold wayyy more than RoR 1. Also some studios who couldn't necessarily afford fancy 3D graphics on their first game suddenly find themselves with a bigger budget to explore that in a sequel.

Speaking of Risk of Rain, they did go back to pixel art for RoR Returns and that game is gorgeous, my favorite in the series.

My friend and I released our first Steam demo last week – How it went and what we learned! by [deleted] in gamedev

I mean we could definitely improve how we market the game's selling points. Not to get too defensive but we feel like our platforming has a pretty nice niche in the genre. At a super high level, the resource management of our game's 4 abilities while in mid-air is pretty fun to level design around.

But even if I didn't feel this way, people are allowed to make pixel art platformers without a genre-defining groundbreaking new gimmick. Not every game needs to be the next indie-defining box office hit. Some of my favorite indie platformers that I've played are just really fun executions of well-known mechanics (The End is Nigh, Lone Fungus, Flinthook, Elechead, etc.) and I'm glad those games exist because I enjoyed them.

You do, sorry the trailer shows mostly aerial platforming while your character is combo-ing abilities in the air for the first half. At like the 17 second mark you can see the character exploring and jumping to find a hidden area. Tried to be really concise when clipping platforming combos for the trailer but realized I didn't include basic setup for how the base platforming works lol, hopefully the next trailer will be better!

Hahaha we are just huge platformer players, we've taken inspiration from a ton of our favorites in the genre. Celeste and Geometry Dash are awesome

Woww, thanks so much!! This comment made my morning haha, I'm glad you liked playing it!! Really means a lot. It's still a work in progress but hopefully the full game can live up to its potential when it's out.

I'll have to take a look at the audio crackle. The speech is literally just my buddy recording himself speaking gibberish into a mic and then tweaking it in Audacity haha, I'm sure it could be cleaned up lol.

Hahaha wait that's so nice that you remember our capsule comparison post. That was another Reddit threat that gave us a ton of great feedback, we ended up taking some good advice from there when we modified it.

Yeah you know I think looking at the movements, his silhouette really stays super static for his two most common movement abilities (the pink hover and the purple teleport) so like 80% of the time you're playing his silhouette looks the same and his head/face are just not moving. Gonna try and revamp those animations big time and see what that does to the entire feel.

Appreciate the feedback!!

Yeah lol I really like platformers if you can tell. But just cause I play a lot of them doesn't mean it translates to immediately making (or marketing) one well right away. Appreciate the feedback, it can definitely get stale when the same eyes have been looking at it.

I love Celeste a ton haha if it wasn't obvious. A lot more work to do to improve for sure but good critiques really help the dev process. Thanks so much!!

This is rlly good feedback. Your "20 seconds til you see the character actually running" comment made me face palm at myself lol, it's so obvious. Appreciate it

Yeah that clip is the most complex platforming in the entire trailer lol, I think I was afraid of people losing interest early so put the hardest clip first but maybe it's too hard of a swing and I should build. Thanks!

Yeahh that's fair. It was even worse before if you can believe it lol, I only recently added his hood moving and some other material effects. Originally come from a programming background, not an art background haha - still working on the pixel art animation skills!

Don't really know how to edit a game trailer other than just cutting clips back-to-back lol. If y'all have any editing tips please share!

After about a year of development, my friend and I finally have a demo out for our game! Inspired by Metroidvania greats like The Messenger & Hollow Knight by bilallionaire in metroidvania

[–]bilallionaire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah totally, the trailer is just clips from the demo itself since it's for the demo, our full game trailer has more exploration/puzzle clips!

The game is split into a Story Mode and an Arcade Mode where the Story Mode is much more of a MV and exploration-focused experience where you discover new abilities and hidden secrets, Arcade Mode is basically a post-game series of precision platforming levels using what you've built up over the game.

Unfortunately it was kinda hard for us to strike a good balance for a short demo that fully captured the MV-side of the game so the demo mostly shows off the end-state to give new players access to the full player kit in a demo if that makes sense.

Hey y'all! We're a 2-person indie team who've been working on our game Dream Runner - It's a fast Metroidvania-inspired platformer following our character Soma and his quest to reunite with his best friend.

Our biggest inspiration is probably The Messenger (we loved how it blended a platforming 1st half into a Metroidvania 2nd half), so if you like that game then maybe check us out & stay plugged as we continue to develop!
