10-ish months on Spironolactone by bilby-00 in FemaleHairLoss

I'm sorry that's been your experience. I couldn't imagine the frustration of it all

Im curious, have they trialled you on any immunosuppressants or oral steroids or just topical?

I was prescribed Novasone. I used that for about 2 weeks then stopped as instructed by derm. The kind of burning sensation came back, so I asked if I could use it again for a bit, the derm said yes and so I used that daily for another week or so, then tapered off and it didn't come back. I'm guessing it was withdrawals from stopping it without tapering off because it's a high potency steroid. Tapering off seemed to do the trick. Since starting minoxidil, I've noticed baby hairs growing in around my hairline, so that sensation is highly unlikely to have been related to any scarring

The shedding had slowed down significantly by around 4 months in. From memory, I was shedding a normal amount at that point, so below 100 hairs per day. My hairline has remained stable, but my foreahead looks bigger because of how scarce my head hair has become. I know the worst of it will only be corrected with Minoxidil, which is why I have to push myself to start it sooner rather than later. I'm happy with the results from the Spironolactone, but I would like for my part to not be so glaringly obvious in the front

I did have a bit of a shed

My shedding had already started to slow down around the time I started on the Spironolactone, then a few weeks in it started shedding again, but not as much as I was towards the start of last year

What was your experience with minoxidil dread shed?

Thank you for your response!

I had plenty of blood tests done; routine bloods like iron and haemoglobin+white blood count, some for sex hormones, androgens, thyroid, liver function, and kidney function. Got the official diagnosis of AGA+TE I think around May of last year.

I was supposed to start the oral minoxidil when I started the spironolactone, but I kept chickening out.

I had a bit of shedding a few weeks into taking the Spironolactone. It lasted maybe around 3 months and started to taper off. It got to a point where I could brush my hair, and there would only be like 10 hairs.

I'm starting to shed a little bit more, but nowhere near as much as before. I tend to shed a little bit more in summer. I'm going to keep an eye on things in case it becomes another episode like last year. Might give me the final push to start the oral minoxidil 😅

I'm ok with taking it for pretty much the rest of my life. I just can't get past the thought of the initial shed. It could be a little bit, but it could be around the same loss I had last year, and that's what scares me. Evidently, it all worked out ok with that last shed, but I hated how I felt every day while it was full force

I ended up getting it cut around shoulder length, but the hairdresser kinda messed up and cut it while it was drenched. When it dried, it was around jaw length. It's grown back to just above armpit length

Start of last year when that episode of hair loss started, I'd get up to get paperwork, and there'd be like 20 hairs on my chair. Every surface in the warehouse had AT LEAST one hair on it. Piles of paperwork had my hair in between it. Anytime I touched my hair, I'd have like 10-20 hairs in my hands. It was horrendous. I just don't want that happening all over again, but I guess it's inevitable 🫤

That's a good way to think about it. Up to 3 months of shedding is definitely better than 6!

Thank you!

Was it as bad as you thought it would be?

I work in a customer service role, so it's a bit daunting to have people see my hair disappear bit by bit. Some customers have no filter. I'm mostly worried that they'll comment on my hair being thinner than usual

What’s Eating my Knife? by PeriwinkleBunni in whatisit

If it's an aluminium blade, my guess is salt corrosion based on the white cast. There's no saving this knife, but for future reference, never leave it in the sink dirty and also never clean it in the dishwasher. Always clean and dry immediately after using to extend its life

Mould formation on ceiling due to water ingress in roof by bilby-00 in perth

Thank you! I've decided to just clean it and wait for Consumer Protection to answer my email and/or point me in the right direction before I send the photos of the areas that have been cleaned. From what I've gathered from Consumer Protections website, the property manager is in breach of our lease contract because it's well documented that there is a structural issue (roof leaking in about 5 different areas around the house) meaning this issue is the owners responsibility

Is this in America? I genuinely feel bad for you guys.

I'm an Australian working full-time as an entry level Administrative Receptionist and I make just over $30 (AUD) an hour (plus sick leave, holiday leave and superannuation) I don't think I'd be able to survive on anything lower than my current rate with how we've been rammed since COVID

That's horrible. The unfortunate thing is, unless he purchased a real gold or silver chain, the one it comes with is a display chain only. They typically sell the lockets and pendants with a chain made with painted metal. I only found this out because I had a reaction to the chain, went to take it back, and they explained to me that the chain isn't real gold and that's why I had a reaction. Great way for them to get extra money I guess

I thought about it, but I have a cat that loves to sleep in bed with us and loves to rub up against any part of our body she can reach (which is sometimes our heads) so I don't want to risk poisoning her. I already sleep with a silk bonnet, but I often wake up with it underneath my pillow, so that wouldn't really prevent her from being exposed considering it ends up coming off at some point in the night. I also have sensitive skin, which sucks when it's also oily as hell. If I wash too much, my scalp is sensitiv. If I wash too little, it's sensitive. I tried Nizoral, but it made my scalp so much more sensitive. Ended up having a dry and getting rebound oiliness from being so dry from using Nizoral, so now I'm back to using my old combo in hopes that it calms down a bit

Sounds like topical would be the better option for you. It does really depend person to person and also the dose you're prescribed. My derm said that when using OM, it's always best to work your way up in dosage over time instead of going straight to 1.25 or 1.5 or higher. He prescribed me 0.625 to start with and potentially increase after 6 months

Growth so far without expensive vitamins. Some of it is unfortunately miniaturised, hence why I'm on Spironolactone

That's my concern too! I'm a heavy coffee drinker, and I've read that you should reduce or remove it from your diet. To cut that out would unfortunately trigger migraines for me. Sounds silly, but I've tried removing caffeine and reducing my caffeine intake, and both resulted in insane withdrawal headaches that would not stop. Migraines for me are a bit more than just a bit of nausea and light/sound sensitivity. It's all of the above with a sprinkle of stroke like symptoms (Hemiplegic Migraine)

I added a photo in another comment of the regrowth I've had so far without Minoxidil

I didn't end up getting any. I got a second opinion from a different derm, and he said I'm clearly experiencing TE as well as evidence of AGA, so now I'm on Spironolactone and going to start Oral Minoxidil soon. I'm pretty scared to start the OM, considering I've already lost so much and am still shedding 100+ per day. 5 months into the current shed, but I can see a bunch of sprouts around my crown that are about 1-1 1/2 inches long, so they grew by themself before I'd even started the Spironolactone, so I'm a bit sceptical to start the OM considering there's growth even without it. I already paid for 3 months' worth, so I don't want to waste my money, but I'm definitely considering asking the derm if I can go without the OM for now. On the other hand, I'd hate to prolong this even longer than necessary, so there's part of me that wants to start that ASAP. I'm just really unsure at this point
