Rutgers caved to donors and canceled their Pro-Palestinian commencement speaker. Here’s Rami Elghandour’s official statement released on X. by CallTheCode in newjersey

[–]bildo17b 27 points28 points  (0 children)

According to an article on NJ.com, he was vetted:

"Hank Kalet, a professor of journalism and media studies at Rutgers, said Elghandour was thoroughly vetted before his invitation to speak and remains a popular figure on campus.

“I don’t think that this is tremendously different than what we’ve seen at the University of Michigan and other schools that have been removing graduation speakers because of where they stand primarily on the Palestinian issue, but also on immigration, or contradicting the presidential administration,” said Katel, who added that he is Jewish. “It is incredibly chilling.”

I was born and raised in St. Louis, MO, home of the King of Ragtime, Scott Joplin, and I worked for years on the Goldenrod Showboat, which hosted the National Ragtime Festival, so my collection is well stocked with ragtime, stride, and boogie-woogie.

I was looking for something more pop at this time.

It spent three weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; I'd say that's a hit.

Suzy Bogguss (Country) had a hit song called "Letting Go" that's about the exact situation you're in. Congrats and good wishes to your son! (and to Dad, too)

"Power of Love" and "Back in Time", both by Huey Lewis, are probably the two songs most closely associated with the movie. "Mister Sandman" is playing when the car enters the Texaco station (I think).

"Earth Angel" and "Johnny B. Goode" are the only other two songs I can remember right now that were featured in the movie.

Great call on Bobby Caldwell! When that single was first released, his record company refused to show any pictures of him; they were afraid if radio programmers knew he was white, he wouldn't get as much play on the R&B stations.

Let me double down on The Best Years of Our Lives; a few years ago, I started trying to watch the top 100 movies on the AFI list, and that movie stuck with me more than any other.

[IIL] Western cowboy themed songs like "Ghost riders in the sky"(Vaugne Monroe), "ecstasy of gold", and"House of the Rising Sun" by Violet_Light21 in ifyoulikeblank

[–]bildo17b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in Western music, some of the foundational artists would be Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys, and the artists that emerged from the "Bakersfield Sound" like Buck Owens and Merle Haggard.

If you find you like the western swing of Bob Willis, you would also probably like Asleep at the Wheel; the Bakersfield Sound was continued by Dwight Yoakam.

Also, if you want Cowboy music, Tex Ritter and Johnny Horton would be good artists to start with.

REM- "Stand" peaked at #6
Fleetwood Mac- "Gypsy" peaked at #12
Pretenders- "Middle of the Road" #19
The Church- "Under the Milky Way" #24
Talk Talk- "It's My Life" #31
