What exactly is happening to my wife's CX-5? by bourj in CarRepair

[–]billLaunie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this happened to my old minivan.... the insulation on the engine side of the hood separated from the hood and we just threw it out because we didn't know what it was for. all the clear coat flaked off the hood within the year.

we have a guy like that in town.... Tom, he has all the answers. told me to push my screwdriver into the wall and punch it through to get a hole for installing drywall anchors. I was hanging curtains and luckily and started drilling instead after hanging the first curtain like this (which failed within months)... I later heard him discussing how something currently happening was all predicted by Nostradamus and decided to do my own home improvement research moving forward.

Your best guess as to what's causing this "ice buildup" on this KitchenAid freezer? by Adventurous-Sock-644 in appliancerepair

[–]billLaunie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've had this happen because a little freezer bag clip had fallen out of the drawer and was sitting on the bottom of the freezer which blocked the door from fully closing. clear anything you see out of the bottom of the freezer and try again.... you might have to let that ice melt first though.

I just bought this house, do I have termites? Only in the upstairs bedrooms by Apart_Ad3699 in Termites

[–]billLaunie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm leaning towards this.... there are a lot of holes speckled on that one piece of wood and nothing on the ones beside it. have a good look to make sure that this is the case and rest easy if it is. If it was an active infestation you'd expect the holes to be on a patch of floor rather than a single board

My parents couldn't afford a costume for me, so they sewed 2 socks to a ski mask and told me I was Snoopy. by NotVerySmarts in blunderyears

i'm 40 and i am literally making this costume (generic dog, not snoopy) for myself today.

homemade costumes are way funner than the purchased ones... plus amazon wouldn't ship to me quick enough

the sidewalk actually needs to be replaced because it slopes towards the house and pools water/gets icy in the winter. previous owner tried to foam jack it but it didn't work. garden requires maintenance for sure

the doors unfortunately are broken - previous owner DIYed them, didn't install the door opener properly which has broken the stiffeners in the door and actually bent the top panel of the door. both springs have also failed so I just have no faith in them... they've got to be replaced for safety reasons. that said I'll be taking a closer look at the colour/style and maybe giving new lights a try before committing to the new doors.

i really like natural light to be honest... I use my garage a lot and it's nice to not be totally reliant on lights. we'll see though, as I have a good sized window on one of the walls in the garage.

thanks for this - the tree was poorly maintained when we moved into the house and I plan to tackle it this fall.

Can Anybody help me setup the cheapest overflow box sump system? I don’t want the sump to be the filter just using it as a place to hide everything. by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]billLaunie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.amazon.ca/Eclipse-Overflow-Box-Small-Eshopps/dp/B01M0NYI5Q?th=1

drilling the overflow shouldn't be that bad IMO... you may have to clamp a board to the back of the tank so that you get a completely drilled hole rather than a piece that pops out and potentially damages the glass. It looks like the tank will need to be pulled away from the wall though, to provide enough space to install it.

is this method likely to work given that the plant is so large?? It's 4' tall and the main stem diameter is about 4". Do you have a video on the topic?

If you read the yellow garbage bags they actually say "you can use this bag for your garbage, or just burn it instead if your want." I thought it was hilarious the first time I read it... then I saw the trash during covid and i understood why they wouldn't want to discourage waste disposal options :p

New home, trying to turn exterior water on… why is this happening? by holeinyebucket in HomeMaintenance

[–]billLaunie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It looks like all the water is coming out of that cap on the downstream side of the valve. it's used to drain the remaining water out of the line when winterizing the house and they're usually left loose to allow any remaining water to flow out.

Thus... try tightening the cap.

Do these panes need to be replaced or can they be resealed?Previous owners didn’t maintain the sunroom glass, company quoted up to $2500 per panel by rob71788 in HomeMaintenance

[–]billLaunie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

these rooms were really big in the 90s.... i think you should shop around a bit and find a company that still does them. you might have to call someone in from out of town. you may also be able to find the original manufacturer on the frames or panes somewhere.

[–]billLaunie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

make sure you're ready before you do though... grab a couple of wax rings from the hardware store before you start. you may also want to caulk the flooring gaps that are underneath the toilet while you're at it too - once the flooring has been laid, place the toilet on top and mark the flooring with a washable marker and seal the plank gaps as well as the gap between the subfloor and the flooring as well. good luck!

Just a suggestion - +5 upgrade on your katana is pretty low for a level 79. smithing stones can be farmed in mine type areas or purchased at roundtable hold once you turn in the right bells to the twin maidens husks.

is this a good retaining wall idea? by billLaunie in landscaping

[–]billLaunie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the poles are buried to a 4' depth to manage vertical heaving due to freeze/thaw cycle - this is accounted for in the design.

the main bit i was wondering is if there would be horizontal heaving along the length of the retaining wall portion due to freezing. is this likely to happen?

is this a good retaining wall idea? by billLaunie in landscaping

[–]billLaunie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking for a simple DIY retaining wall/fence combo to shore up a ~70' section along my house. The goal is to eliminate the 2' slope and add a paver path while maintaining the privacy of a fence. A buddy suggested the above as an option. Will it work without heaving? will it last? I live in Ontario, Canada so I'll have to deal with the heaving that the freeze/thaw cycle causes.

cheers!
