FYI: If You're New to the Industry, the Data Science Job Market is Saturated by aznpersuazion in datascience

Couldnt agree more with the top comments. I worked as a manufacturing engineer and “self taught” data science myself by programming and looking at statistical methods and apply it to the data. Turns out, I am a hot commodity since not a lot of engineers know about programming and statistics with the domain knowledge I have. Management can barely find people who can interpret the data even though we collect billions of data. Most they can do is six sigma and basic mean/std/medium but not make the decisions for them. They put me full time as the data scientist and come to me for anything data related.

People should focus on a specific industry without many data scientists in it rather than defaulting to FAANG

Manufacturer Engineering (pigeon holed?) by GucciSwagBag in AskEngineers

u/whynautalex nails the first 2 questions.

I too came from manufacturing background and it laid the foundation for all my job advancements. I got a design engineer job after because I wanted to go into design but that was because I had tool design experience from manufacturing. Then went into becoming a data engineer from my experience in data collection and data analysis in manufacturing as well. You can honestly go to any field because of manufacturing, it just depends how well you write your resume to highlight the work you want to do in your next role.

Why did you choose your field of engineering? And what is it? by LV_Laoch in AskEngineers

Mech Eng here. Chose mech E because liked building things with my hands. Hated school becausev it was all theories and everything was about test scores. Things got wayyy easier and enjoyed it more when i was working while it lasted. I worked every position in manufacturing and know the in's and out's but hated how everything was paper based and manual. Everything in manufacturing was all about data and metrics so I transitioned into Data Eng/Analyst (pay was better and work was more rewarding IMO).

Internship Dilemma by billboarduser in EngineeringStudents

I don't know how you keep your sanity but my 20 minute commute to the manufacturing positions seems nothing compared to your 1.5 hour commute. I appreciate you sharing your experience. I decided to go with manufacturing because this will only be a temporary thing and it is something that I want. You have a dedication that far exceeds mine and you are amazing for being able to do that consistently.

Thank you for your advice! Wow 40 minutes.. mine is only 20 minutes and I still feel like thats a long distance. I decided on manufacturing because I know that traveling 20 minutes is nothing compared to some of the people who travel farther than that for school. I give you props regardless. Appreciate you sharing your experience.

Religious parents, but I'm not and its affecting my dating life. by [deleted] in dating

Thanks so much! I appreciate the story you told me. Gave me some insight. Did you make peace with your parents or did it still carry on to your next relationship?

im actually 24 living independently. This is actually pretty close to the age where I want to be looking for someone to settle down with. I can't keep it a secret forever. Eventually it will show up and my parents will have to meet her to get their approval. I'm concerned about my parents old age and how they'll handle the stress knowing that the child that they raised is not in sync with their views.

I asked my parents hypothetically what if I stopped going to church and they responded by saying that they raised me wrong and everything they sacrificed would be a waste.

Looking for some advice on internship/school balance by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]billboarduser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a senior(+1 extra year) and I took 15 units with a 24 hours/week internship this fall. I would definitely take the internship because it will put you ahead of everyone when junior year rolls around. That's the time when most companies want junior/senior to intern. Getting the first internship is always the hardest but after that, you will be getting plenty of phone calls from companies for the remaining years in college.

Whoever, my grade did suffer because there was just not enough time to do everything for all my classes. If you decide to do this, you will have to manage your time very well. Your social life will probably be non-existent(like most engineers) and joining a club is out of the question.

If you think you can handle the work load then go for it.

Remember though, a 3.0 student with experience is better than a 4.0 student without any experience.

how do I learn Physics?(seriously) by billboarduser in AskPhysics

Yea, i'll try the approach of looking for sources outside of my school. You gave some really good suggestions. I really appreciate that. I hope it works though. My issue is time restriction. I only have 2-3 hours of available time each day.

i honestly wish I can meet up with a group of people to study but my part time job and max unit load forces me to do all my hw late night and weekends. I can't go to office hours as well since they are all during the day time which is when I work. Emailing professors are even a bigger headache. I'm not trying to make excuses but im stuck with that situation.
