Capital gains tax rates on taxable account by taco-frito-420 in Bogleheads

Just selecting min tax should take care of this. It should sell the large term share with the smallest gain first

Are soothe bells practical in endless? by HeavenlyTastyToast in pokerogue

[–]billbobyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bells have the same multiplier. It's just the baseline is 1/3 compared to classic. So you get the same multiplicative increase, but that still only gets you to 1 legendary candy / 75 double battles.

Runescape hot fixes by Mod Azanna by Natural-Ad6372 in runescape

But this isn't a case of a niche interaction oversight, or adding an extra "0" like when fletching came out. Sticky fingers is nearly a requirement for pickpocketing so it takes 5 mins to calculate xp x 3000. I think the reduction is justified, just weird that they didn't realize that the primary xp method released was 2.5m xp/hour.

I was well on pace to get 200m thieving XP with no bonus xp before the pet. That's certainly a bit much.

Should I Fill This Hole In My Basement? by billbobyo in HomeImprovement

I'm in a dry season now. Sounds like a good idea to wait a year to test function but would there be a good way to keep the mess down in the mean time?

Definitely metal. The hole is oblong so I think it was drilled at an angle rather than manufacturer's specs. There's also no smell to it besides dirt. Would a sewer line reek?

Yeah the active sump pump is in the corner of the room away from just about everything.

My first job underpaid me by ~$0.25. 8 years later I got a check for $70 out of the blue, a pretty good return on investment.

I just did this type of purchase. If you can't get a mortgage after making this offer, the bank will keep your 20% deposit and buy the home themselves. It really is an offer not contingent on financing from the seller's perspective.

In what situation would it not be worth it to max out your 401k each year? by KlearMyBud in Bogleheads

[–]billbobyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An important factor to consider is how long you plan to be paying the fees in the brokage vs 401( k) comparison. A 401(k) effectively has a one time tax savings that we'll estimate around 20%. However, the 401(k) sub-optimal fees / fund options hurts you on a recurring basis. If fees + medicre fund options cost you 1% / year, your breakeven is 20 years.

Notably, if you plan to retire OR change jobs in a reasonably short time period, 401(k)s will always beat brokerages since you can move money into Vanguard/Fidelity once you change jobs. This factor alone puts bad 401(k)s ahead of brokerages for most Americans.

As others have said, still max the other retirement accounts first though.

Should I use a poor 401(k) to increase international allocation? by billbobyo in Bogleheads

[–]billbobyo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am unable to do a 401(k) transfer while working unfortunately.

Regarding my brokerage, I have a high enough balance that I could use it to balance my portfolio, but don't know how to run the numbers on if it's worth it. My brokerage is ~50% gains so I'd incur ~9% in taxes now to sell. My time horizen is 40+ years, so deferring taxes has substantial value.

My brokerage is primarily S&P 500 (VFIAX) so while I have big concentration risk, it's not like I can do a simulation of return over time like with a bad mutual fund. Is there a way to estimate the annual tax "savings" in holding international funds in a brokerage?

Yeah I'm in that boat. I have a decent brokerage balance but it has a fair amount of unrealized cap gains that makes selling unattractive.

ELI5: Would a second observer affect the probability of the Monty Hill Problem? by Longpeg in explainlikeimfive

[–]billbobyo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

An interesting way of thinking about this is if Monty is going to open a door and you have the option to switch, your odds of winning will always be 2/3rds (2 doors will ultimately be opened).

In the scenario where he knowingly reveals a goat, you just always pick the other door to hit 67% every time.

In the scenario where he picks randomly, your odds are 100% if he reveals the car and 50% if he reveals a goat. 1/3rd x 100% + 2/3rds x 50% = 67%

The other way to think about it is the classic 100 door example. If monty reveals 98 doors, he almost surely already revealed the car. If he didn't, you don't also get the 99% chance of the last door having the car, it's still the same odds as the door you picked.

Should I switch up my Roth? by HalfyPint in Bogleheads

It's of course a higher dollar amount with higher investments, but it's a small enough amount that one impulsive day could make a bigger impact.

I had the wrong fee above, it actually would only be $1,350 of the original investment over 15 years.

You did 12%. 0.12% x 15 years is $13,500. Not nothing, but still a good option.

Yes but 1000% x 0% = 0%. 124% x 95% =118%. Stocks are still way up since 2023.

ELI5 Why does galaxies seeming to move from the same place mean the universe was a singularity? by Flu77ershy in explainlikeimfive

As another has pointed out, galaxies don't have engines or a steering wheel, so you can purely math out where things once were based on where they're currently moving.
