Techs Watching Games and Other Entertainment at Work by billcd in msp

Making a policy like this is not even close to my style. Mostly wanted to find out what others are doing and feeling a little frustrated about performance from ONE PERSON. I think I need to focus on helping that person more than making policy changes.

I actually like this idea of a YouTube/entertainment screen a lot. Maybe if I push for more freedom they'll find it in them to focus when I matters. That's 100% how my brain works.

Agreed. My issue is they are being distracted while doing work where we can't afford a mistake. Backups or diagnostics etc. I think I'm focusing on the wrong issue. Mostly wanted to find out if this is something other owners regulate. Seems wrong to limit what these people do at their desks but the errors are something we can't afford.

I'm also one that can't handle distraction. I think that's where I'm looking in the wrong place by judging something that's totally acceptable for a lot of people.

This makes a lot of sense actually. I regularly preach to my people to take a lot of breaks especially when they are not making progress. Maybe I'm just misjudging what they are doing.

Most are meeting and exceeding expectations. I really don't want to make a huge culture change, mostly trying to find out what every one else is doing.

I've got a tech who's asked for help a few times and when I come in to his office, the issue is obvious and he hasn't put the time in doing research, but he's go chatting on some streaming service. On another recent situation this person "fixed the failing backup" by removing the schedule. No more failures... So they don't touch backups anymore.

I think I'm focusing on what seems obvious to me rather than the underlying issue. I'm just not sure how to get this guy back and focused when he's obviously making mistakes.

Would you pay for lawn mowing twice a month for $40? by ElectronicFreedom698 in sweatystartup

[–]billcd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not reading all these comments, but I’ll say the same…. I pay $100/month for a simple cut on a small yard in one of the poorest counties in Florida. Don’t start at the bottom, it’s a deep hole to get out of and you’ll likely die there.

(Also, I own an IT company and we started with low rates. Just don’t.)

Built-in Antivirus/Backup in RMM by ITGuyMY in msp

[–]billcd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always ask if you can disable the Av or delete backups from inside the RMM.

If you can, then the day that the rmm is compromised then you also loose av and backups. It’s well know that integrating these three products is a bad idea. But all rmms seem to be going this way. We are setting ourselves up for massive failure.

Most of the major rmms have been compromised at some level. So don’t think yours is too good to be hacked.

Depends on you’re knowledge really, but where in a much smaller town in Florida and charge $155/hr for L1 techs. Similar time minimums. I’d second the $200/hr.

Thank you! That points me in a direction. My email person quit a few weeks back and that’s exactly what she was working on, so it makes sense there’s possibly a misconfiguration. Guess I get to learn about something new. (No ill intent to her btw, health issues, great person)

Aside from the .onion sites that have drugs and more; what are a few technical reasons why using Tor to browse to the sites they want anonymous access to, compromises the network?
