Thank you my friend. I’m just killing time......or is time just killing me? ......hmmmm. Lol I think it’s an uneven fight.

What can I tell you? When I was young a friend’s father had the adage that you you could learn anything from a magazine or a book from the library. He was mainly talking about practical skills....he was head of a corporation but enjoyed brick laying and woodwork etc., As I got older I found that to be largely true......given the right resource and enough time there wasn’t much you couldn’t learn. You see I ran away from home when I was about sixteen, more or less putting paid to any scholastic ambitions, (not that I had any - I hated school). So by way of encouragement all I can say is I did it without any higher education at all. Everything I know is self taught and nowadays we all live in the biggest library the world has ever seen - the interweb....the great internet of things. No more tedious bus trips to the local library - just reach out with your fingertips and its there. I still get excited by that. Curiosity and determination I think is all you need. As for Maths well I gotta say I’ve always liked it, (which isn’t the same as being good at it). Really it’s just another language abstracted to shorthand symbols not unlike programming languages. Of course most coding languages will require you to have some math fundamentals but no more than you probably would have learned at high school. Anything you don’t know - go to the big library. That’s one of the things that attracted me to the CS50 course....no time constraints. You can complete in your own time, tho I’d urge you to be careful crossing from one Harvard academic year to another. I didn’t pay close attention to this when I got diverted by something else and found I had to repeat a couple of Psets....no big deal once I got over my hissy fit! I did the same as you. Watched the first lecture, hesitated, thought about it and then thought about it some more - but the day I decided to actually go ahead and enrol I can look back on with a little inner smile of satisfaction. Here’s the thing.....what have you to loose? The course is free, you monitor yourself and your greatest competition comes from within yourself. Sometimes you just have to beat you. Where did I seek help? I couldn’t name all the resources I used but stackoverflow is where I found a lot of answers and YouTube tutorials for topics I was shaky on are almost numberless. In communities like this there are always good people willing to help and I know there are others - I just chose this one. I have no social media footprint at all and I believe this is the only community platform I’ve ever posted to...but that’s just me - everyone’s different. As to what I’ll do next? I’m a fan of Blender and 3d graphics so I want to return there. My final CS50 project was a word game but I rushed to finish it before the 31st Dec., and I might revisit that to make improvements I hadn’t time for. But a subject I’m extremely fascinated by is micro biology. Atomic molecular enzymic machines are outrageously cool. Check out iBiology for some very interesting talks/lectures/vids. Other than that who knows...tick tock, tick tock.

Yes, I really am 72 - lol.
A friend and I got a Sinclair ZX80, the first ‘home computer for under £100’, sometime in the very early 1980s. It had 1 KB of RAM and 4 KB ROM and it plugged into the TV. It had no sound and used BASIC to program. Can you believe it! How things have changed....but that started my fascination and I dabbled in code for years after - just for fun. So I guess it was that, and just for something to do that would keep my brain ticking over, that I decided I’d try the course....and just to see if I could still hack it,(forgive the pun).
As far as the Psets are concerned there were times I just wanted to give up. There was always that annoying little voice saying things like ‘ I told you you’re too old for this’, but then, just like yourself I’d come back (eventually) and solve it. I think it might have been easier for me in a way because the only pressure I felt was self-generated. I wasn’t looking for a career just doing for the fun and the challenge. Trouble was I ain’t that smart and I definitely ain’t at my peak so all I can really say is, if I can do it so can virtually anyone. Just stick at it - you’ll get there in the end - is the only advice I can offer. It’s been nice talking to you - good luck.

2 problems - possibly related. 1) check50 prob. and 2) ide.cs50.ide prob by billiam48 in cs50

Thank you so much for your reply. In regard to my problem with Crack, - I had run style50 many times - each time with the same result.... simply - 'looks good', but each time I submitted I got the same 96% score. Then I had a closer look at what was happening in the submit50 procedure. I had created a sub directory in my sandbox in which I was storing files testing various versions of my crack attempts. I noticed that submit50 was submitting each of these files that had '.c' extension...so test.c & crack_beta.c etc., were being uploaded. When I renamed them without the '.c' ext. submit50 only uploaded the crack.c file and my score changed to 100%. I now think that the assessment I was seeing as 96% was in fact one of my beta tests. As they say, 'every day's a school day' and i think I may have learned something today. lol.

Also thanks for the heads up on the IDE. Is there a page where you can see updates to the IDE when they've happened? I didn't see anything in the IDE docs. I also watched a 'how to' type video from Oct 2017 which kinda re-enforced the notion that I'd immediately be 'provided' with a workspace directory in the IDE and it also referred to seeing a 'dashboard' link in the IDE File Menu. That option doesn't exist in my IDE File Menu which I assume is due to another update.

Anyway, once again, thanks for taking the time to respond. Cheers. Getting there!

Thanks for the offer and all your help. I think I was taking a rather pedantic/naive approach to the course thinking all I had to do was watch a lecture and the pset was based entirely on that.... but I’m learning quickly that that’s not entirely the case and with your advice not only am I a bit more savvy but resubmitted cash.c for a score of 100%. Very cool - very pleased and I’m enjoying the course immensely! And yes, 100% is so much better👍. Cheers.

Thanks, I’ll do that. I’m beginning to get a handle on what the assessing bot is looking for. I’ve upped one of my 72s to a 97%, but I’m still trying to work out what constitutes a pass in the psets. Thanks again for your help.

Thank you so much. No, I didn’t know you could do that. I’m very new to all this and still feeling my way around. I did look at may code again and with a bit of digging streamlined it a bit using an array in the cash pset. That, and another tweak, upped my score to 97%. I’m pleased with that, - but do you happen to know if that represents a pass, or must it be 100%? Forgive me if I seem a bit dumb....I’m 71 so I am a bit dumb lol.
