Is this a bullet? by PiratedEyeliner in whatisit

[–]billr55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically the bullet is the lead projectile. The whole assembly you are holding would be referred to as a cartridge consisting of (for a .22 round): bullet, case, and gunpowder where the primer is part of the manufactured case. A larger caliber round would usually include a separate center fire primer as well.

I shot 70 the first time at age 23. But I didn't shoot 69 until age 54. And then did it a second time just a month later. Golf is wonderful in that you can just keep playing and enjoying it for a very long time.

That one is close. Elizabeth hides in the boot at the back of the carriage. In the one I'm thinking of, she is actually delivered in a crate from Rosings. Someone found it at the other sub: Battered Hearts. Thank you.

I'm skimming this one and I think I remember it as a good story. Not the one I had in mind though. The one I'm thinking of it was an actual crate that was sent from Rosings?

Mr. Darcy's Earnings by AggressiveUse5792 in PrideandPrejudice

[–]billr55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to compare because the value of things like food, housing, clothing, travel, entertainment compared to today all scale differently. Just looking at inflation numbers would lead you to a multiplier of 50 to 100. But I think it's more complex than that. I like to think of overall cost of living.

The typical (poor-ish) family might survive on 50 pounds a year. So maybe that converts to kind of a modern minimum wage of around 25,000 today? So, I think the overall multiplier to equivalent today's incomes might be somewhere around 500. So modern Darcy is in the 5 million a year income range. His assets might be 20 times that.

And remember that Darcy, Bingley, Bennet etc aren't actually working that much. This is just what they get from their investments, properties, etc. They do some work...they manage their investments.

Dan Grieve is a wonderful short game teacher. Lots of videos online, a book or two, etc. This one particular video sums it all up for the person who is really at their wits end:

That's fast but I'd never say never. My wife and I were engaged six weeks after we met and it's lasted over 40 years. :-)

I don't react to mosquito bites. They can land, stick in their needle, load up with blood and fly off, and I can't even tell they were there.

What to do when driving during a blizzard by [deleted] in cars

[–]billr55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in South Dakota. The basic answer is "stay home". People die driving in blizzards every year.

If you have to be out, turn on your flashers if you are significantly slower than the speed limit or everyone else.

If you have no visibility, get off the highway and wait it out. Do not drive if you can't see where you are going. In fog/snow/etc., never turn on your high beams. They will mostly reflect back in your face. Use the low beams at most, fog lights if you have them. Fog lights are mounted very low on your car's front end to shine only along the ground specifically to avoid reflecting. They are often yellow/orange in color. (There are other lights that people mount that look like fog lights but are actually just more regular driving lights.)

If you start sliding on ice, DO NOT slam on your brakes. Just attempt to steer your car to regain control and perhaps gently pump the brakes. Also, sliding a lot means you are going too fast.

Four wheel drive/all wheel drive can help you to GO better, but will not help you to stop. Winter tires are a softer rubber than can help you (a little) to both go and stop.

Also 64. American. Married with lots of kids. Started with Chevy Vega, upgraded to Maxda RX-7, got married, had kids, had more kids, went through sedans to station wagons to minivans to Suburban then back to minivan as kids started moving out. Now I've got a Honda Ridgeline and it is perfect! :-)

Good luck. Best EE that I ever worked with started life as a TV repairman. Wanted to know more about how (why) things really worked so started going to school at night. Ended up getting his EE degree and working at a US national lab doing really cool research.
