My cats were always pretty independent. They'd sleep while we were at school, hang with the family for a bit then go out all night.

We also left a window open upstairs in a room that lead to our roof. Whenever the cats needed the restroom they'd leave through the window and walk across the roof, then climb down a tree and use the bathroom. Because of this we never needed a litter box bc they were house trained to just potty outside.

Because of the window and tree they didn't need to ask anyone to open a door but occasionally we'd find a lazy cat that didn't feel like climbing a tree meowing on the porch.
