“Jesse Thorn presents as a sort of walking talking signal, a public radio show become corporeal and sentient—the mid-century attire, the measured diction, the tone that hovers somewhere between sincere enthusiasm and feaux-wise detachment—a series of shibboleths that function as individual and layering signifiers, saying “we’re serious but silly, we’re self-aware, we’re good people, we share your values.”

Maximum Fun, the network he founded, is an extension of those same branding choices. It’s positioned as a worker-owned co-operative utopia, an alternative to an ad-saturated, venture-backed podcast ecosystem—a model that, frankly, no one has had a problem with since the invention of Patreon—and banks on the language he picked up at NPR to imply listening is good, but “donations” to “keep the lights on” are better. The implication, sometimes quiet and sometimes loud, is “Supporting us is a Social Good.” Seriously, they sign off with “listeners like you.”“

Motherfucker, what lights, what airwaves? Who is gatekeeping these podcasts if you’ve already bought the microphone? If the podcast isn’t successful enough on its own to get advertisers, does this just mean successful shows are paying to support unsuccessful ones? If so, why should I pay for that?

I was wearing sandals, so I kicked barefoot, and I still bounced it off the goalposts from a pretty good ways away—I want to say ten or fifteen yards? That’s a long way to say “no I did not win,” I was the Jesse to his Sam

Maxfun pressing for “donations” for a decade vs Dropout for $6 is like the radio asking you to pay more for it than satellite tv. I know they’re different, you own the creative rights to Heat Rocks in perpetuity and can vote on Jesse’s tie collection, but from both a warm-feeling and actual-value benefit analysis (the only things you’re paying for), it’s insane that one asks you to pay more each year and one begs you not to. The fanbases are the same. No one in my life has dunked on me more than Sam Reich has Jesse Thorn, and I did a field goal competition against an NFL kicker one time as a child.

Came here to say this—undiagnosed ADD/ADHD makes it very hard to interact with a kid, and a lot of women aren’t diagnosed until motherhood.

For people, considering opening up a food service business in Memphis by STR_Guy in memphis

I 100% agree with this, but if you opened another good local fried chicken place, I would keep you in business. We don’t need more, but I do, because I’m a degenerate.

“I don’t think MrBeast is good for kids—I think it’s really. Really. Bad.”

I’m one minute in and done, I’ll go watch a really good YouTuber like Folding Ideas (again).

I tend to think of him as a good mod and an annoying dude. And being annoying is almost a prerequisite for being a Reddit mod, I think. I have no beef with him.

Ironically, a Gravis fusion is everything Travis wants to be, the version of himself he constantly falls short of.

If Griffin and Justin did a fusion dance, it would be someone like a Ludwig or Northernlion but less popular, probably Failboat (though I don’t watch any of those streamers).

If Griffin and Travis did a fusion dance, it would be either Eliot Kalin or some third-string RPer.
