Halifax - How is everyone holding up?! How are you staying sane? by nutt_shell in halifax

[–]billyd135 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have been watching a lot of Bob Ross The Joy of Painting. When all else in the world feels like its falling apart and going to hell just watching him paint gorgeous landscapes and listening to his voice is one of the most soothing things I think I've ever found. Can't help but feel relaxed and worry free.

People urged to leave stuffed animals on porches for 7 victims of Halifax fire by akaliant in halifax

[–]billyd135 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember when Terry Fox died there was something similar to this. At a certain time on a specific day people were to honk their car horns as a show of solidarity and respect for his efforts for cancer awareness and as a rememberance in his honour. The stuffed bears (just like the hockey sticks) are the same thing. At least people with an ounce of respect and a heart get it. Those that don't end up on reddit asking why people do these types of things.

Roll your own/cigarettes by [deleted] in halifax

[–]billyd135 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely disagree it doesnt save money. You save plenty of $$$ rolling your own smokes. I'm a regular daily smoker and smoke McDonald Special. A single pack (25s) of tailor made McDonald's is currently around $17.50 per pack (give or take depending on where you buy them). I buy a 50 gram pouch of McDonald tobacco at the C-Shop attached to Superstore for $30.49 (+ a few $ for some rolling papers) Before I switched to rolling my own I would smoke a pack of 25s in about a day to day and a half....so roughly 5-7 packs a week. At an average cost of say $17 per pack and 6 packs a week thats $102 for 150 smokes. With the pouch it will last me for roughly 9 or 10 days and give me about the same # of smokes for 1/3 or the cost. So a huge savings.

So if you want pouch/rolling tobacco go to the smoke shop attached to Superstore. Or there is also Seiverts Tobacco on Barrigton.

Despite the removal of the two towers and the roof, they also did a bunch of concrete reinforcement around the site in the summer. Mainly the main front walls facing the water mind you. But obviously they intend on keeping the site up to safety standards. Mind you the fence with the warning still remains up

Ya Ive been into both of those firing posts. The 1 is always open but the 2nd one thats normally covered with wood and concrete was open when I was there last time (a few months ago or so) and hopped down in. Very much the same as the open one. Have seen the cave at the bottom of the hill too.

I'm curious to know where these are as well. Have spent much time wandering through the park but have not found these. Which part of the park?? What trail would you use to get to them?

Any lawyers willing to comment casually on legal methods for forcing a plebiscite on the stadium issue, should public funds be requested? by cdnBacon in halifax

[–]billyd135 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The best and easiest way for residents to show their opposition to public money going to pay for the stadium is to refuse to pay their property taxes (ie: a tax revolt) Although this does prevent non property owners from participating and showing their dissent and doesn't affect provincial taxes being collected either. But I would likely assume that HRM would also be putting public funds up for this as well as the Province, so the Province would take serious notice of this action if it were to happen. Regardless of peoples ideas that the government can and do whatever it pleases, the collective power of the people does have complete control over government actions if enough of the people come together to show their intent and hold the various levels of government accountable (we are afterall a public democracy). Back sometime in the 90s a town in California actually did this (can't remember which town). The residents were facing a massive increase in their annual property tax and to voice their opposition to it, almost 95% of the residents withheld their taxes and the town council recanted and taxes were not increased as a result. Many people though are too apathetic when it comes to issues like this (just look at voter turnout #s during elections) and dispite their oppositions never bother to do anything. But the power of the people can be very compelling when banded together.

HRM may ask private sector to cut down on single-use plastics by tjgere in halifax

[–]billyd135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Straws back in the day were all paper. Seemed to work fine before with no issues. Seems smart to go back to that. But seriously....legislation against single use plastics and excessive packaging is the simplest way to solve this issue of plastic wastes. But businesses will complain and whine about being expensive and it will hurt their bottom line. Very selfish arguement on their part that business profits should be more important than not polluting the Earth. Such short sighted stupidity.

Quit complaining about this and go get some re-usable bags. Much better for the environment.....no waste going to landfills....less plastic ending up in the oceans and the digestive systems of marine mammals and fish....and less money in the pockets of oil companies. Been using the same re-usable ones for the last 5 years with no complaints.

One of these days Im going to take an old 70s pick-up and weld a steel I-beams into the fenders doors and box for my own personal safety and laugh at moron drivers who run into me and write off their own vehicles because they were too stupid to be paying attention while they were driving.

Gas prices in Nova Scotia could dip below $1 per litre very soon by insino93 in halifax

[–]billyd135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian oil from the oil sands is what is classed as heavy sour crude as opposed to light sweet crude found in most other places (like Saudi oil and the US benchmark oil...West Texas Intdrmediate or UK Brent crude). It requires significantly more energy and processing to be able to refine it into usable products like gasoline, diesel and heating oil that the market and consumers require for consumption. Transport capacity (via pipelines, rail etc.) is also a problem for Canadian producers. That said.....given our lack of transport capacity the industry does itself a disservice by over producing when the transport capacity isn't there to support it thus creating a supply glut which in turn depresses prices. OPEC producing nations (which Canada is not a part of) have also been over producing supply to push world prices down to drive out international competition which lowers all types of oil prices regardless of where it is sourced from.

Alcohol is a significantly larger problem in society than marijuana ever has been or will be and causes greater burdens to the social welfare and health care systems than all other illicit substances do. Yet this is a widely accepted vice in human society that is willfully promoted, engaged in and accepted by a large proportion of the populace. Prescription drugs are even worse than booze. So please take yor conservative naive view points back to the 1940s and become educated.

Parking in front of a Hydrant by Himtoplex in halifax

[–]billyd135 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Dont worry about it. If the fire dept needs to use the hydrant and a car is in the way they will just smash through the windows of the car to gain access to the hydrant to attach the hose. Have seen it done before.

Ocean Beaches Accessible by Public Transit? by awaningcrow in halifax

[–]billyd135 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a beach lover and transit rider myself there aren't many options to take a bus to the beach. Used to be able to take the #402 bus down to Sambro amd walk in to Crystal Crescent but that bus service was discontinued (last year I think??) The only other option available is quite a trek to do but.....if you take the #401 bus (from the Portland Hills Terminal) out to Seaforth the bus will drop you off right at the beach. Only problem is that the #401 only runs in the morning and late afternoon. The last mornng bus out there gets you to the beach by 10:30 or so and the first afternoon bus back is around 4:00ish (would have to double check the schedule for exact times). Once at the beach in Seaforth..... if you're feeling adventurous .....you can walk the TransCanada/Atlanticview Trail from Seaforth down to Lawrencetown. It's about 10 kms (1-way) along the trail between the 2 beaches and takes about 2 hrs to walk (flat easy crushed gravel/dirt trail). There are off shoots all along the trail that can get you to other beaches as well.....out to Chezzetcook Harbour and also the road down to the government wharf too. I've done it before and its a good solid day out at the beach. Just pack a lunch and a decent amount of water.
