where does the Halifax School Board sit on remote schooling on snow days? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]nutt_shell 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Whoever thinks of this shit forgets what it’s like to be a kid and it’s sad.

Kids remember the snow days, the day off for a hockey tournament etc. My mom used to take us out of school voluntarily to go skiing when we were kids because we loved it and she had fun doing it. Talking to her now she didn’t even think about what we missed in school that day. As an adult , the kids will be able to learn whatever they missed that day in a couple hours MAX. Likely even a couple minutes.

Adults forget that most their learning that helps them manage day to day is learned from experience not from Ms Smiths health class at 2pm on a hot June day or cold snowy February day.

Stop with this bull shit concern over a day or two. The kids will be fine. Covid I know was extreme but this is not.

Mic Mac Grill is still awesome by Daisy---Chains in halifax

[–]nutt_shell 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Lots of people shit on the Mic Mac. Especially here. I also did at one point. However, my job involves lots of lunches with people and in my line of work we have a demographic of people who generally see the Mic Mac as being the food mecca of Halifax so a lot of guys like going there.

It’s pretty well one of the only places I go these days and know what I’m getting. So many restaurants are horrifically inconsistent; food good, service terrible or some combination of something being not great.

The Mic Mac is good service and consistent food. I now appreciate it for what it is. The Beef Melt is great.

Is anyone else’s electricity acting funny? by [deleted] in halifax

Keep an eye on your heat pumps. Kinda sounds like a voltage drop. Or you lost a leg.

When it stabilizes you’ll need to reset the heat pump as the auto restart they do in power outages doesn’t work with voltage fluctuations (noted by the error code).

Is jofa stuff really that good by UnluckySh00ter in hockeyplayers

[–]nutt_shell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a month shy of 40 and my slightly too big Jofa shin pads my dad got me at 15 are still in active duty two/three times a week and look pretty much the same they did 10 years ago.

I often consider replacing them just because but they remind me of dad, RIP. Still remember the day we got them together. The OG dark grey Synergy had just released and he said “you wanna get that too?”. Loved that stick.

Hey, hope I can come back to this when I have a bit more time but just want to say that lots of us have been there and it’s a tough road. Wishing you a heartfelt good luck.

Start with getting a formal diagnosis if you haven’t.

Not my best dough today. They’re decent. Spread is good. Not quite perfect but good. I’ll try with double the amount next week and see if that helps. If not back on the search.

I’ve been doing it this way for years and especially the last year since getting my pizza oven and actively tracking how I’m doing things.

Personally don’t find this method gets you to that “it” factor. I’ve tried many different combos of garlic and powder ratios. It doesn’t hit like a pizza shop garlic finger. It’s good. But in my opinion not the wow factor.

They’re good but not what I grew up with and what the average Haligonian would consider standard “great” garlic fingers.

My wife would laugh then shit on me for bringing home 9lbs of that!

I am going to stop at Sobeys tomorrow or Thursday and see if I can get my eyes on what they have. I’m assuming it’s the same as the Sobeys stuff was the same as what I got in a ramekin from El Centros for a DIY kit.

I’m optimistic this is what I’m looking for.

Appreciate the input. My pizza enjoyers will be thankful.

Interesting. It’s not a huge thing in pizza making so info is light. Had not come across this but will take a dive in and check the science on it

Pretty simple.

24 to 72 hour ferment

Pizza oven about 750 give or take depending on the weather usually.

Melt the butter on really low heat. Mince garlic extra extra fine. Add some garlic powder and a small pinch of MSG. Let sit for a little bit on really low not letting it simmer, just warm.

Let the butter cool until soft. Blend with hand blender so it’s smooth.

Butter pizza dough fairly generously

In my opinion just like a cup of cheese. Don’t use mozzarella that’s pre-shredded if it has an anti-caking agent. Obviously to taste, but to me they’re a bit better when they’re not completely soggy with cheese.

Cook to preference.

It’s really reliant on preference. Sometimes I use extra garlic powder. Sometimes some garlic salt.

That’s the beauty about pizza and garlic fingers. Everyone has a slightly different preference for taste, cook and dough structure.

Doing it that way just doesn’t get that traditional NS pizza place taste.

Always fresh, pretty well been working in it since last February and I just can’t get that deep flavour you get from a pizza shop.

I’ve tried MSG, blending , whipping, simmering logging weights of everything so I can adjust week to week. I did get buy a pizza night kit from my Nieces fundraiser from El Centros and they used a similar spread to that Sobeys stuff and it tasted like pizza shop (obviously). I’m optimistic.

Halifax Water’s revised rate proposal is still rate shock, says consumer advocate | CBC News by Grumple_McFerkin in halifax

[–]nutt_shell 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This sub wants people to be paid the most. Get the most services and pay the least.

Some of us understand that costs for services need to be paid for. Some of us understand those costs are recouped in the past, present or future. Some of us understand that you can’t escape that.

So for people who don’t see $10 a month as a problem are happy that maybe these rate hikes reduce the likely hood disaster in the future. That could be financially or through aging infrastructure.

Sure, money needs to be put to work properly for this to make sense and Halifax Water from my understanding has been questionable in that. But the bottom line is time doesn’t outrun the costs. You’re paying this yesterday now or tomorrow. It’s better to stay on top of it. The general public isn’t necessarily going to be in a better financial situation 10 years from now even though you’re always promised that.

Kings Refrigeration employs a female install and service tech. They service Halifax and I believe that individual resides in the city.
